Whats up fellas I just bought a 98 Eclipse GS. But theres a couple of problems with it.

-Speedometer is freaking out on me. (Maybe speed sensor?)
-Has new headers and exhaust but it smokes a little bit
-Shifter is loose!
-Exhaust pipe rattles

Im a total newb soooo any and all help would be appreciated.

Thanks!:thumb:

first off welcome to the club man second how bad does it smoke might be a head gasket unless its just because its cold all the other things are easy fixes

Thanks! And its not like horrible or anything. It may be the head gasket but im not 100% sure because the previous owner was the one who put in the exhaust, cat, and headers. Sometimes when I shift from 1st to 2nd it smokes ALOT but that's only happened twice.:notgood:

_Speed sensor is a good place to start. Check you repair manual for the exact number but pull it out and test it. It wont cost you anything but a few moment's of you time. Is the check engine light on?
_Headers would not cause your car to smoke unless you bought them used and they were or are soaked in oil on the inside. What color is the smoke? What does the smoke smell like? Is it constant or an intermittent thing?
_Is is manual or automatic? If it is manual are you talking about the shifter base assembly? Or the shifter cable's or bracket's are loose? If its auto are you talking about the base? Or the shifter lever and/or linkage is loose?
_Does the exhaust have the O.E.M style rubber mount's? Is your exhaust solid or is it able to be taken apart?

Help us by in the future by being as specific about the issues as possible. It makes narrowing down the problem so much easier. The avg car on the road today well over 700 part's. To give a generalized issue and expect a precise corresponding answer is a crap shoot. You could get back 50 different opinion's if you leave the description of your problems so broad.

Well for the speedometer, it can be loose giving a funky reading or it might be time to simply replace the Speedometer Sensor.
The smoking usually comes from oil burning on either the headers, downpipe, engine block or soemthing hot.i would check for oil leaks and check all the gaskets.
and the muffler MIGHT JUST sound that way because you have aftermarket headers and muffler on a GS LOL.
But i would have to hear it or see it.

-Yeah I think I am going to have to start with the speed sensor for the problem dealing with the speedometer.

-The smoke is like an off whit/gray color. I was told it smelled like it was burning oil.

-Yes the exhaust has the rubber mounts. It seems like it is holding up fine but do the OEM style rubber mounts make it shake? Because I believe that might be the problem.

-And its manual. To me it feels like its the shifter itself that is loose if that makes any sense.

Thanks for helping me narrow this down! I really appreciate it :thumb:

For the rattling exhaust, go under the car and check for extremely corroded heat shields. My Heat shield for the cat was corroded to the point where the bottom piece was barely hanging on. A quick fix was to just wrap safety wire tightly around the whole heat shield and theres no more rattle.

Then I'd say check the cat itself. The honeycomb inside of it might be falling apart and rattling inside of it.

one time my speedo went crazy it was just a loose connection, try pulling off the connector and putting it back on... that may fix it.

For the loose shifter, pull off the center console and check all of the shifter bolts. That should solve the problem. My shifter was a little loose and that fixed it for me.
