Hey EclipticalGS, you didn't happen to get measurements of your shell did you? Is there suspension on it or is it up on blocks?

I've thought about how I felt about this swap for a day or so. And after some thinking, I believe if this actually comes together, a 2J in a DSM would be absolutely awesome. The 2J is an incredible engine, and 2gs are dead-sexy with a fat-booty. Plus I love RWD. There could be a lot of win if this goes through.

If you got the skills, funds and patience, I say go for it. It isn't going to be easy and you seem to be aware of it already. It would be nice when it's done!
I've been thinking about swapping a 2jz into my 70 Camaro for awhile, just to give the purists a heart attack. But I figure with the stock 2jz and the right turbo, you can make some great power, retain full drivability and maybe decent mpg. Plus you can have fuel injection and good tuning capabilities over a big cam, high compression, carb and a lot of cubes and lots of noise. I seen the guy that did it on a 67'. BigBlock power is quite a bit of fun too though
Best of luck and keep us posted with plenty of pics!

can someone give me measurements of the rear end from hub to hub? I'm looking up dimensions of other rear ends and trying to find something near stock width for the rear end swap.

Hey boosted, havent even gotten to my house in the past week, been stayin at my fiances. Tell me ALL the measurements you need. Ill crank them out this weekend. Ill be cleanin up so it'll be quick. Let me know!!

Edit, The car is only on jack stands in the front.

Here are the measurements I need:

- In between the frame rails in the engine bay

- From the firewall to the rad support

- center of the hood closed to the bottom of front cross member (although im almost positive I'm going to have to cut the hood.)

...I got the wheel base measurements off of the internet already.

I have also been thinking about the weight distribution of the vehicle quite a bit.

With these things, I honestly believe that the weight distribution could actually be improved over stock:
- the A/C and power steering components out of the car
- a heavier rear end (supra, 300zx, 3000GT, etc)
- the drive train moved back as close as [comfortably] possible to the firewall
- carbon hood
- possibly adding weight to the rear

And I still think it will weigh less than a Stock GSX

I think you could make it weigh less than stock as well.

On the weight balance problem.. If i were you would at least want a roll bar. that will help slightly. seeing as your a hp/$ kinda guy i would just grab a fiberglass hood, 90% of the weight savings for 50% of the price.

rear mount some stuff. you have the space... If you wanted you could rear mount the turbo, radiator even a heat exchanger for a w2a ic if you needed.
the newer corvettes use a rear trans axle. :aha: It would be crazy to adapt one for your use. but i would be willing to bet you could get a perfect weight balance. your already making a custom drive shaft.. why not go nuts LOL. yea its way more complicated than that. but your crazy enough to do a 2jz swap right.

cool to hear your in the state college area. I would love to come buy and chat or turn a wrench some time.

:applause:

Sounds good to me man!

When I get underway with the project, feel free to come grab a ratchet... and a beer!

I would love to man. Not enough gear heads in this town.

Seriously hit me up when it gets time, just PM me. Ill bring a case LOL

now boosted this is going to be one sick build and im going to follow this all the way with you but just one question y the 2jz instead of the RB? just curious is all
ggood luck man!!

Recently there was an engine build competition between the major auto magazines. The engines were compared on horsepower/liter, torque curve, and cost. Guess which engine won? 4G63. It beat the RB26. It beat the K22. It beat the 2JZ. It beat a rediculous supercharged 502 Chevy. Seems to me the engine has some potential.

it also beat the sr20dett sorry had to throw that in there i read import tuner like my life depends on it

Well i think your in the wrong siteROFL. The majority of all us on this site KNOW that this motor is superior to 99.9% of all engines out there, and we can back it up. I mean when the FASTEST/QUICKEST 4-cylinder, the HIGHEST HP 4-cylinder, FASTEST back-halved sport compact, the FASTEST MODIFIED 4-cylinder, the FASTEST 3/4 chassis, the FASTEST AWD, cars all run a 4g63, does some silly little vtak engine do that? NOPE, and like i said before, you can the fastest supra/skyline/rx-7(whatever) out there and i can always name a faster DSM.:hellyeah:

im all for the 4g63 and dsms but im sorry your wrong on that one how about the veilslide skyline? 1360 hp its getting 600 horses at 1.5 bar and this is all out of the infamous rb26 like i said im all for the dsms and 4g63s but i still respect the 2jz and rb26dett because they are infamous engines known through out the tuner world.
and i cant wait to see how this swap works out..its going to be fricking amazing!!!:thumb:

Multiple reasons why I'm choosing the 2JZ over the RB26.

Cost being one, you can pick up a 2JZ drivetrain or a lot cheaper than you can a RB26... 1JZ's are even cheaper and can make similar numbers to it's big brother.

Secondly, when something breaks I can go right to the toyota dealer and grab parts. Whether it be a head gasket or a water pump or w.e.

Trying to keep it as headache free as possible!

gotcha gotcha good luck on the build man im totally stoked to see what this comes out looking like post up some pictures soon

Right now I'm really weighing my options to back-halfing the car, although I'm trying to make this process as "bolt-in" as possible. I'm really just stuck on what I'm going to do with the rear end and wouldn't mind input on the situation from you guys.

Hey man GL to you and the build, I had a 89 240 with the dual cam swap(came like that with the car)and I was thinking about putting a 4g in it(RWD)of course but ended up getting rid of it. I hope the build go's well, I wish there was more I could do for you on the positive note since everyone here wants to flame on your thread(pretty sad since were all DSM'ers here)but if you can think of something I could help with feel free to send me a PM. Again, good luck with the build man I love the motivation :)

I dont even need to say anything.

Good luck on this project I am looking forward to it. Just ignore the negative comments. I am looking to trade my 4runner in this spring for a 350z that will at some point get transplate with a 2J as well. I'm wondering why not go all out and do the 6 spd getrag? Take into consideration I skimmed your thread and I'm not sure how much more complex this would be for you. Then again this build is pretty sophisticated in the first place. Another thing that I'm wondering is how are you going to deal with traction? You can't fit much of at tire in the rear without having it stick out obnoxiously.

I have chosen not to do the Getrag 6 speed for 2 reasons:

1) Cost - These trannies are becoming harder and harder to come by and certainly arent cheap.

2) The R154 with a aftermarket thrust washer is easily good for 700whp, I'm pretty confident I'm only going to build it to 5-600whp. These are readily available and are inexpensive. They go from anywhere for 500-750 on ebay, anywhere from 1500-2000 cheaper than the big bro 6 speed. Besides it bolts up just the same and clutch kits are cheaper as well...

As far as the traction issues go, everything is still being worked out in my noggin. I will most likely be flaring the rear fenders with bolt on fender flares, most likely Abflug R33 rear flares modified to fit. If not I will be doing a full wide body rear fender set. If I cant get 11 wide wheels in the back I wont be happy. Either way its gonna have a wider foot print over stock.

The rear end can be made to work so many different ways, I'm having a hard time figuring out which would be the most effective/least custom. Sure I can back half the car, but that makes it too one-off. The whole point of this swap is build a reliable RWD 2G, with huge HP potential inexpensively...

...Not because I don't have the money to build an expensive project, but I'm trying to get the R&D done in order to replicate full kits that people can do the same swap without pulling their hair out or completely destroying the factory chassis. The more and more I think about this I am very confident I can build this car for around 5-6 grand just for a basic swap.

Of course I can do a larger single turbo and a crazy fuel system, etc and I will later on down the line, but I just want to get it in and running to show people that it isn't going to cost 15K to get done and be completely daily drive able.

The best part about this swap is with basic bolt ons I really and truly believe this car will go mid to low 12's on DR's...

Oh and for the record please quit giving me the "Brant Rau" speech LOL

yes the car is completely bad ass. But I'd be willing to bet from the day he bought that car until today, hes spent EASILY half a million to get the car where it is. It's went through SOOOO many stages, SOOOO many rebuilds and so many different ideas. I'm not building my project to set records...

...I'm building it to rip the rear tires off sideways and look hella sweet doing it! :rocks:

2G body + 2JZ power + RWD + BJ's from hot Asian chicks who think my car is dope = Happy bOOstd GSX

:sneaky:
