So I am figuring that my oil burning issue is a result of a turbo that is in need of a rebuild. (please see my other threads to see if I am way off).

Anyway, I've removed it from the car and now I'd like to have a few rebuilders contact me. I've seen them on the forums here and there but since actually deciding to rebuild these things, I haven't come by them.

Thanks.

Smokes a lot out of the exhaust... There is some oil in the bottom of the SMIC... There were bubbles between the exhaust manifold and turbo housing... compression tests were performed and the results are below... Turbo is 6 years old...

I took off the turbo and noticed the shaftplay is quite nonexistent... Just running out of ideas now.

DRY: 128, 120, 130, 110
WET: 168, 145, 152, 155

Reasoning for the tests: White smoke from exhaust after warm-up.

By some oil in the SMIC what do you mean? Like a quart, a small layer? Sounds like typical blow-by from a turbo'ed car. If their is not shaftplay I would suspect rings or valve seals, especially w/ the compression tests wet/dry being that significantly different. That motor did have a decent amount of miles on it too if I remember correctly. The bubbling may be a gasket/flange warped issue.

Have you done a leakdown test yet on the cylinders? That should tell you if your getting a ton of blow-by from the rings or valve seals like it sounds like.

Let me know if I can help, I have a few weekends in October I can probably come by and take a peek

Just a bit of oil in the SMIC.

The turbo has just been sent back to me and I will be putting it on when I have time (hopefully within the next week or two)...

jusmx did a great job and for 5 or 6 years on the turbo, it doesn't hurt to rebuilt it.

Yeah., there are a lot of miles on the car (180,000) and if this doesn't solve the issue, I am thinking cracked head. I am assuming that when the ARP studs were put on, a nice gasket and proper installation was used. I have a new head gasket in the basement jsut in case.

I have yet to do a leakdown test, and if you want to swing by to check out things, TJ.. let me know.

That reminds me.. I need to find the gaskets to put the turbo back on the car.. Any recommendations from anyone?

The turbo definitely showed signs of receiving too much oil. Whether that be related to the inability to properly drain (clogged / kinked drain line or too much crankcase pressure) or excessive incoming oil pressure, it didn't appear to be an actual problem related to the turbocharger itself.

The journal bearings were smooth; a little worn, but absolutely no scoring at all. The turbine seal groove was loaded with coked oil and carbon, so that seal wasn't effectively doing it's job. This was evident by the wet turbine wheel and wet carbon behind the heat shield.

Both seals and journal bearings were replaced, and I installed a restrictor (.078") in the oil inlet fitting to keep incoming pressure and volume under control. I included new oil drain gaskets in the box- the exhaust manifold and o2 housing gaskets can be used again unless they are cracked.

The only gasket I need is the one leading from the turbo to the oil return line... I am thinking of scraping it clean and using a liquid gasket.

The gasket should be a OEM Mitsubishi composite headgasket, ARP's installed w/ a torque wrench in 30-60-90 increments, from the middle out. I'm really thinking rings on that motor, a leakdown test would tell for sure.

I am also thinking rings at this point..

The smoking is so much better now after the turbo went back in, so I really think that a rebuild was necessary.

I would like to do a leakdown test, so whenever you want to come by, I would really appreciate some help on this. I don't have a tester either.

Thank You.
