I want to put some aftermarket cams in my 420a. I want to make as much power as i possibly can without a turbo.......because I am saving for a gsx.

So im thinking get some cams for now, headers, high flow cat and go from there.

What cams do you guys recommend?

I recommend you save the 600-1000 dollars you'll spend on getting headers, cams, and HFC for your 420a if you are wanting to get a gsx. If you are just going to get rid of it anyways, save the cash and put it towards your GSX cause that's about 1/5th of the money you'll need to get a super clean one. BUT if you want to spend your cash, go with a Crower stage 2. To be honest, that question has been asked and answered a gazillion times on here. If the site search engine is not working properly, contact a moderator.

WOW! thats sounds amazing! after hearing that now i HAVE to cam it up! What type of exhaust do you have? I know you have headers, are you running any test pipes or HFC?

That's a vid of your car turbobrick!!??!!?? I have watched this vid a million times on you tube because the sound of that 420a is so amazing. I would also like to know what exhaust you are running. Also are you runnning a cat?

well brick, that just gives me even more motivation (like i really needed anymore:p) to get my head ported (sense we are running the same cams), then we'll have to meet up and tear up some town with are amazing sounding 420a's. BTW to everyone else, thats another reason his car sounds so beastly, ported head and cams, makes for great noise, and as i would imagine, great fun!

One more thing about those cams guys. If you choose to go turbo, these cams are not a waste of money. They are the cam I would choose to use on a turbo set-up (as a matter of fact I did, LOL).

Ha, thanks guys, yeah thats my baby. To be honest, it sounded so sick and nasty there, but since then its smoothed out a little. I still have people staring at me at redlights when its loping and bucking like a camaro. These cams will make your car a bit louder, and also benefit from anywhere you can get more airflow, test pipe, ported head/IM. That clip was with my magnaflow cat in, its pretty damn loud with the test pipe, but its a standing .3 faster on the track with it in.

Ill give you the mods list:

Full Cold Air Intake
Modern Performance 60mm TB
EGR Blockoff
Ported/Polished head
Crower Stage 2 Camshafts
Crower Valve Springs
AEM Uego Wideband O2
OBX header/down pipe
Tsudo 2.5" Catback/Full 2.5" Exh.
Magnaflow Catalytic Converter/Test Pipe interchangeable
MSD Blaster Coil Pack
F1 Racing Stage 1 Clutch

Dont be afraid to go to ebay for a catback, they can be had for ~$210 to your door. I got mine from there, it was the one with the pic of a random catback, and a black EVO in the background. 3 piece design, 2.5" all the way back, muffler (can) is a little big but it sounds decent, and all the hangers and everything line right up.

his 1/4 mile time is in his signature, my 1/4 mils time is by my below my picture, and i am running basically the same mods except for the head port, to give ya an idea of how good the howell ECU is. Also Turbo had his friend do his head port (sorry for answering his questions, was bored in the forums, and me and him had discussed this in PM's) I should be going up to pure tuning this weekend to get a price on head port to give ya a more accurate price, but they quote the 4g63 at roughly $350 to give you an idea of how much it will cost

Yeah, fotown got the head and times question.
2Jeezy, the exhaust pretty much its level and straight, fits pretty well in the bumper cutout.

A 16.0 may seem slow-ish, but when you think about it, stock 99 SIs run that time. And Im still running under stock ECU control, which pretty much stops making power around 5k for me. Instead of going to Howell for the ECU though, Im just going to megasquirt. Looking to hit 14s...

Can I ask why not go boost? You got a nice setup, obviously a couple dollars to spend. Why not turbo? If its a preference thing I understand. Its just the money spent N/A VS Turbo, you cant even compare the power per dollar. Whats the highest N/A numbers you can make, low 200's?

Almost any turbo setup thats worth a crap will get you better numbers....

While any turbo will make better HP numbers not any turbo will make quicker times, bullets NA is faster than a lott of turbos :p. Although it is true the fastest turbos will always be faster than the fastest NA's.

I think for everyone not goin turbo they have their reasons, I know for me personally I have a lot of reasons. Now just to be clear I am not saying or arguing that NA is better, just stating why I choose to go that route.

1) Turbo lag- I cant stand it, I've driven my friends subaru with a TMIC, and just hated the turbo lag, when he is driving I can't even feel it, but when i put my foot down, it makes me want to cringe, I love the instant power I get out of a NA

2) Sleeper- No one ever expects a fast NA, wether they be DSMer's honduh's or w/e, the sleeper aspect is great for leaving mouths open

3)Underdog- I just always love cheering for the underdog, one of the reasons i rooted for the giants of pats in the superbowl, I just like making things harder on myself i guess, because the payoff is always better

4) Challange- about anyone can slap on a turbo and go 200+ HP, but it takes much hard work and effort to get that in a NA.

5) Reliability/first time tuner- This is my first tuner car, and i figured I'd start with a NA to learn about cars, and not risk blowing my engine with a first time tuner messing with boost and etc. Also it's my daily driver, so another reason I needed that reliability, and I just dont feel it would be as reliable with a turbo (not saying 420T's arnt reliable, just feel NA is more reliable, less moving parts to go wrong)

Hope this shreds some light on why some of us went NA builds, and I am sure others have other reasons, but more importantly I hope I convinced some people to stay NA:hellyeah:

:ohdamn: and we used to be friends.......:p

And just to give you numbers, I ran 13.9 when she was still a daily.

Oooh, really? What did you have done at that point?

And Im also wanting to stay N/A just for the challenge of being able to. How many fast non turbo 420As have you seen? Bullett is at the top of the list. Hopefully Ill be not too far behind.

I dont mind turbo lag, in fact my other car is a Turbo Volvo:sneaky:. But I love the sound of an all motor 4 cyl. If I wasnt doing it in this car, it would be in a Honda, so just be happy I got this car!

2) Sleeper- No one ever expects a fast NA, wether they be DSMer's honduh's or w/e, the sleeper aspect is great for leaving mouths open

This is all well and good and having a sleeper can always be more fun but I wouldnt consider having a "fast" sleeper is possible being N/T. I wouldnt consider Bulletts to be a sleeper and that is the power range you need. ROFL You can hear it from 20000 miles away. Not to mention the GIANT HOLE in the front for the intake. ha. You can, however, have a quicker sleeper N/T.

I still say if you're going to spend that much on all of those supporting mods, you're taking 1 step forward and 2 steps back on acquiring a gsx. I'll never advocate against the 420a, cause I love being the underdog. It is funny when I get a guy in a GS-T or a TSi start to rail me for an uncirculated BOV....The look on their faces are priceless when I raise the hood.

Here's to scratching the speed itch!
