I have a 2g 1995 gs, non-turbo. My problem is that my coolant in the reservoir will be gone in a matter of a couple weeks after I filled it full. I was under the intention that the coolant was a sealed system, so any idea where it is all going? I haven't seen any coolant leak anywhere where I park or anything. Any ideas? Thanks

Either burning it through the engine, or it's evaporating under pressure. I'd have your radiator cap tested first.

Is the carpet on the passenger side wet? Turn the heater on. Does it smell funny? A slow leak in a water pump can eat up that much antifreeze, yet nothing will hit the ground. Crawl under the car and look up at the water pump. Look everywhere for any traces of dripping antifreeze that is being evaporated before it hits the ground.

Or there's a crack in the overflow line and it's sucking back air instead of coolant- make sure the snorkel tube in the inside of the expansion ("overflow") tank reaches to the bottom. Also look for cracks in the overflow tank.

Already checked those, they're good :)

The carpet isn't wet, nor does the heater smell funny. Could the water pump still be the problem if those two problems haven't occurred?

Sorry about all the questions guys, just compiling a list of all the possible problems then I will check them all out at once.

Also, the Check Engine light came on yesterday, could this be connected to the coolant leak somehow? I am going to get the code for the check engine light today and let you know what it says.

If it is just the overflow that is not holding coolant I wouldn't worry too much about it. Hence the word overflow. Is it overheating??

i know some one that had a problem with the coolant being pushed into the overflow and if its not sucking back check that ## thermostat is closing and sealed so the pressure can bring the coolant back instead of forcing it out of ## overflow

It doesn't overhead ever, it runs perfectly fine all the time. The only problems I have is a small oil leak and the coolant problem.

Sounds like you don't have much of a problem then. I don't even have the overflow tank on mine. If you are that worried about it though I would just buy a new tank. There is probably just a little pin hole in it that you can't see.

I was having to refill my overflow once every 3 weeks. Took the car in and it ended up having a leaking heater hose.

If its leaking into the cylinders you should see/smell it at the exhaust. If its not leaking out the side of the head it could be evaporation before it hits the ground. See if your loosing compression. Or like the others were saying maybe it only leaks when the system is pressurized and its so small of a hold u dont see any on the ground

if you blew the head gasket its possible that the coolant could just be coming out of the overflow.

What are your driving habits - freeway or around town? If doing freeway, it could be pushing out the overflow for mine does that on occasion on long distance driving - have to refill the overflow bottle since my "low coolant" "radiator symbol" light comes on.

The waterbox where the t-stat is located at is still filled to the top just that I lose it on the overflow.

if it not on the ground its going inside the engine... possibly your head gasket going bad

Thats exactly where i was going. I totally agree. You better be checking your oil for discoloration of some sort. Im almost positive you got an internal leak somewhere if your not seeing the coolant on the ground.
