I was doing some measuring the other day and came up with apox 59 & 1/2" on the awd 1g dsm rear hub to hub. The fox 79-93 mustang rear end comes to 59 & 1/2" as well. I figgure after my 3 bolt goes I will swap in the 7.5" rear first then to the 8.8" rear. Both you can get 3.55 gears for with lsd. You would potentualy eliminate wheel hop & weak haftshafts! And there is alot more performance parts for the mustang rear setup like solid upper & lower control arms with spearical buschings, & ext. Also the ford rear is alot easier to get & cheaper. Plus the shocks & brakes are better off the mustang. This would be good for drag racing. For 2g's the 94-98 mustang rear is about 1.5"s wider. For those that auto x & need a irs, you could go with a 8.8 out of the lincoin mark 8 or cougers / t birds or cobras. A custom drive shaft would need to be made for this setup & it would require some fabricatring of a torque box.

By the time you add spring perches you might be very tall because an 8.8 has very wide axle tubes. This is an incredibly common swap in the Jeep world where they use 8.8s out of explorers and they are very strong axles. A new driveline should be fairly cheap and a big brake rear upgrade should become very easy.

Swapping an axle isn't that much work but I'm also not sure how much gain you'll see. Of course it might be nice to have a huge selection of rear lockers including full selectables to make for nice street manners and wicked traction when you flip the switch.

I have an 8.8 out of my fox thats fully built, thats is sitting right next to my talon. Im replacing all of my bushings in a couple weeks and wanna see how it can be mounted under there. Theres someone on my local forum that did the swap that came out amazing. His web site is http://www.garychios.com/, he knows his stuff.

I don't know that the labor/payoff equation works out.

I made a 1g n/t a/t into a 5 speed, then turbo, then awd so, I will be fabricating everything my self. I curently have a 3bolt lsd rear with 190k miles on it. My car will be making 500whp. I can get a 7.5" rear with lsd for $50. I figgure I will use it as a mock up & run it till it breaks then the 8.8 will bolt in just the same. Not much expence here. Also I would bet the sra would drop some weight over the irs sub frame. I know in my 01 cobra I droped 150lbs going to a sra.
