I put brand new Topline 3g lifters in my 2g. It was very loud at first, I let it idle for about 20 minutes and alas all the lifters started to shut up. BUT the original VERY LOUD ticking/tapping noise was still around, so we drove it to get some gas, i have it hell, and had no problem climbing to 14psi but it had no ass to it, I really need some help now as I have no idea what else it could be, I just want to drive it (and not give DSM's a bad name by the noise)

Im assuming the manifold gasket replacement yielded no results?

None, again it wasn't a waste of money though, as the old one was toast. I was extremely frustrated afterwards so I don't remember everything but it still sounds like its coming from the back of the head.

drain your oil then. you dont have to pull the whole pan. if its a bearing it will for sure show in just the oil itself.

Does the noise get louder when you raise your rpm's? I spun a bearing, and it completely chewed my bearing and then the rod was just slapping against the crank. As I raised the rpm it would get louder and louder. at idle it sounded just like lifter tick. Just my two cents. You could also check for a leak on the intake manifold gasket. But as it has been stated definately check your oil again. if its not bad then you could re-use it and not have to spend $40.

You should take a video with sound and post it on here. Walk around all of your engine bay, and lower the cam around and under your engine. Maybe we'll be able to tell what the noise is.

That and have someone raise the rpms from idle while youre doing it. so we can hear what it sounds like and if it gets louder as the RPM's increase.

Sorry about the cell phone video but you get the idea. Suggestions?

Yea I'd definitely say rod knock POSSIBLY a spun bearing. I spun my thrust washer on my 98 GSX and it sounded like that, not quite as loud but close enough to make a slight comparison to it. I'd go ahead and pull the plug and check your oil first and make an assumption from there, if you end up with any flakes in your oil then you know its in your bottom end, spun bearing more than likely. Either way your oil pan is going to have to come off if you do find metal shavings in your oil. Do you have a magnetic drain plug? You can usually just look at that and see without having to drain every drop of oil in case you don't have the time today. But at least you'll be on the right track. Keep us updated bro

Ouch man! pull the engine and get a crank kit or rebuild a 6 bolt. Ither one works. Oh BTW, dont just get new bearings thinking thats going to solve the problem, ### about 250 miles later the same problem will occur. ### it kindof damages the rod and the crank too. good luck. hope u get it fixed!

If it was thrust related the sound should lessen with revs, not worsen

Def spun bearing(s)

Don't keep running the car with a spun bearing. You will be launching a piston/rod through the block soon if you keep that up. Not to mention you are filling your cylinder head/turbo/oil filter housing and more with little metal shavings.

You have to clean all that metal out of the other parts if you rebuild that engine. Otherwise that same metal will destroy the new crank and bearings when you start it up.

So I finally got the motor apart, and low and behold, rod number 2 had no bearing on it at all, just a few shavings in the oil pan is all that was left.

Ouch,:ohdamn: i was prayin for you. But just gives you one more reason to upgrade. Good luck with the car, keep us posted on the progress :thumb:
