I put brand new Topline 3g lifters in my 2g. It was very loud at first, I let it idle for about 20 minutes and alas all the lifters started to shut up. BUT the original VERY LOUD ticking/tapping noise was still around, so we drove it to get some gas, i have it hell, and had no problem climbing to 14psi but it had no ass to it, I really need some help now as I have no idea what else it could be, I just want to drive it (and not give DSM's a bad name by the noise)

If its louder than lifter tick, i could only guess a bad crank pulley, or piston slap or rod knock. Check you oil for metal flakes.

sometimes it just takes a while for them to pump up if you didnt prime them before hand. Care to post a vid of the sound maybe? Itll be a little easier to identify what it may be if we could hear it.

If the oil is clean rule out a spun bearing. I notice you have a 2g, do you have the 7 bolt still? If so, are you sure the noise isnt the trigger plate smacking the crank sensor? If it is...im sure you know what follows.

No but valve tap would. I shouldnt have said piston slap. Usually that only happens after a rebuilt motor has too loose clearances. Not on a motor thats been running for a while.

No shit. The crank moves to the driver side? Not the passenger?

James :dsm::talon::laser:

As if i never would have thought it would move that way once they walk.

James :dsm::talon::laser:

AH. yeah thats the way they move, towards drivers side. If you think about it, all the pressure from the clutch is pushing in that direction, you know what i mean? Thats why most cases are noticed after a heavy clutch install.

We primed them, and it's still a 7 bot, I'll idle it more tomorrow as well as try to post a video, but i've also heard of people or at least someone mistaking it for an exhaust leak, which may be the answer to the lack of pull on max boost?

Makes sense.

Sounds like you could have some other major problems with this car.

Very possible. i had my manifold gasket blow out and my god it sounded like death. Pull your mani off and check it out. I wouldnt doubt it one bit if youre missing a section of the metal gasket.

dont get too worked up. Check that mani gasket like i said. When mine blew it definatley sounded motor ish....but i knew what it was.

Awesome, I'll do that tomorrow as it is in my buddys garage right now, but you can bet I'll be praying to the DSM gods all night. We've all been there right?:thumb:

Im glad you mentioned it or i never would have thought of it. Id say chances are thats it. If you change it and it still does it. Sorry...but THEN you should check for crankwalk signs.

Yeah only a few more strikes before I just say screw it and pull the engine. I'll check the mani, then recheck the timing, and let it idle a bit more, if its not cleared up by friday its coming out this weekend, which is kind of a bittersweet feeling actually.

haha I remember when my mani gasket was bad it sounded like a freaking Kazoo. If it is making weird noises like lifters and doesnt have power could be timing. Dont pull the motor over tomsthing small. Take a break clear your mind and think simple. :)

Ok, so I pulled the exhaust manifold and right off the bat one of the studs were missing a nut and right next to it one was loose enough to twist off without the wrench. The gasket wasnt horribe but it was burn up a litle around where the nuts were missing/loose. So I have a Fel-Pro on the way I'll get tomorrow. The friend helping me still doesnt think an exhaust leak would sound like that which again is a tapping noise, but we'll see.

Personally I would pull the oil pan to double check for metal flakes. My oil came out clean but the pan was full. I had a slapping noise coming from the valve cover as well and it turned out to be a bearing.

Then again Iam still a newbieROFL

That makes sense, but before I waste $40 in brand new oil, I need to keep in mind I've drove it over 100 miles since the annoying sound started (stupid I know) and dont think the motor would have stood up to that with any shavings in the oil.... Inputs?

It'll take 100 miles with rod knock.

Pull the pan, especially since its a GST
