okay so i finally decided that i'm gonna tint my tail lights with vht niteshades and i bought some today at the local advance auto. my only question is that my tails already have some silver paint on them and my rims are gunmetal so i wanted to know if i do use the tint spray and just spray over the silver do you think it'll turn more of a gunmetal color and match the rims?

i hope this picture works

probably if you put enough coats on it, i mean like a lot of coats, but maybe it would be to dark on the what used to be red parts. I dunno if you catch my drift..

I agree with ratatack. Scrape off the silver real good and then spray the shade on.

the rims are 18x7.5 enkei zr2's and they are pretty beat up i need to get all four of them refinished. and i want to scrape the silver off the taillights but i just dont know how to without messing up the taillights or spend a day just sanding. LOL any suggestions?

What did you use to paint the tail lights? If it's just spray paint you could go to the hardware store and get some mineral spirits, that should take the spray paint off. If it won't I would just throw some black paint over the silver and mask it off and do you tint.

i believe the silver is just spray painted on. i bought the car like that and i never really liked it myself. in fact when i first was walking up to look at the car i thought it was duct tape or something. i just never took the time to fix it. i think i'll just sand it down a little and just mask it off and paint over the silver with black. i dunno i was also thinking about taking all the silver off the tail lights and just tinting them and painting the whole center section black. i kinda like the look of the red and the orange tinted

^ I agree there you should try carb cleaner in a small spot and see if it will take it off just be careful of the rest of your paint.

Use a solvent to remove the paint, scuff up the lights with a red scotchbrite pad and some water, spray some tint on and shoot it with three coats of two part automotive multi panel high gloss clear. This is what we do in the paint shop i work at. Just a thought

Wetsand with 400 grit, then 600 grit, then if it's more than just lightly dull hit it up with some 1,000 grit, all wet. After that spray on LIGHT coats of nightshades, and do multiple coats until you get the desired results. The key is light coats, and if you don't want your lights to be dull throw some clear coat on after.

so heres the final result. i got in a time crunch and therefore got a little lazy and didnt get to take the silver all the way off so i just ended up masking it off and painting what was silver black and tinted the lights. the niteshades went on very easy and smoothly, alot better than i expected. i'm not sure if i wanna clear coat it yet or not because i kinda like the flat black look, but, on the other hand what benefits would i see from spraying clear over it?

If you spray it with clear it'll really "pop" and match your car well, vs the cheap "I tinted these myself and got lazy" look of dull tinted tail lights.

I really like it, looks good. Now you just need to get rid of the lift kit.

yeah i agree with the clear coat now after a few days of looking at it. i made some extra cash today helping a friend around his farm so i might go get some clear to spray on it tomorrow. what would any of you recommend using? and as for the lift kit, LOL well that'll be gone as soon as i break down and decide to spend a couple hundred bucks. i need to do some research on here first about it but as for right now i dont know if i can anytime soon because school is coming soon and thats gotta be my first priority

Too much black (or maybe your rims are just really dirty) but the tint job looks good

i agree with the red lip comment, but i don't know how you could do it on these rims with the lip the way they are. here is a picture of what it looks like. any suggestions?
sorry about all the different questions in this one thread but i'm trying to keep the number of different threads to a minimum

I had a little extra time today and some sandpaper laying around so i did some more work on the tail light section of the talon. here's a quick pic of it before i sprayed the tint over the lettering and put it back on the car. i got in a time crunch before i had to run off to work so i'll try to get pictures tomorrow of it tinted and on the car. i think i got it too dark though. let me know what you think
