All threads with vague titles regarding engine bay noises are now merged HERE.

If you honestly feel we can diagnose an internal engine problem from a poor description or low-quality video / audio sample, give it a shot.

I own a 1997 gst spyder and there is a ticking noise comming fron the engine. It comes and goes and it mostly sounds bad at idle. I have 97,000 miles on it and i change the oil regularly. I changed it about 2000 miles ago I need help to fix the problem.

I would check around on craigslist for one close to you. thats how i found mine. Either that or check some local junk yards. I know there is one close to where i work that has a full motor, thats good. The trans went bad on it the only thing not on the motor is the turbo set up. They took the manifold off with the turbo.

ok that sounds like the balance shaft. same thing happened to me ounded exactly like that. but i got a built 6bolt now. check ## balance shaft belt.. sounds lik that caus the belp probbably broke and only one shaft is spinning...hope it didnt #### too many things up. get a BSE kit. good luck!!!...

How would I check that?

Have that knock on my 95GST. Mine was only at about 2000rpm. Oil had shavings in the pan and my bearings were toast. Emery clothed the crank to get it good enough to throw a new set of bearings on to get it home. In no way is this a permanent fix as the rods and crank probably have to much damage. Im looking for a new block. . .

Look in the cylinder head forum for a thread called "knocking noise under my valve cover". Guy has the same symptoms and theres a couple vids that will show you what to look for. It might be a little bit old now so you might have to scroll down a bit.

Also I believe you can check to see if its the bearings by letting the car idle and then one at a time pulling the plug wire for each cylinder. Which ever plug is pulled when the noise stops thats the bearing thats bad.

im not to sure how much they will charge for it. you have to pull it yourself. I do know the owner though so he might pull it for you for some extra money. the only problem is is the yard is only open on sat. i'll call and see how much if i still got the number.

LOL yeah it say Hyundai right above the spark plugs LOL

I read on here that people use hyundai valve covers since they are built better and are less likely to crack from overtighttening. But they usually get the ones that dont say hyundai or shave the letters down.

So my question now is will the pictured motor work or not?Is it really an Elantra motor?Supposedly it came from a turbo 96 eagle, but I need advice.

I need some help from my fellow tuners.

I put the top end together on gstbufords car Saturday (8/8/09). Car ran awesome and pulled hard. Yesterday Steven calls me and tells me his car is making a funny noise and has no power. He checked the timing and did a compression test with flying numbers.

He comes to my house and sure enough the car is making a noise. It sounds a very loud Errrr noise WTF. I checked the timing cover and eliminated that. I have no idea what the noise is!! I'm thinking that the noise is loud enough for the knock sensor to register it, and put the car in limp mode :hmm:.

I also notices that something seems to be rubbing the timing belt. The picture below you can see the print on the belt is almost wore completely off. This is a 2 day old belt with almost 200 miles on it .

I will try to get the video uploaded off my blackberry later today.

Does anybody have any idea what the hell is going on??

Just a thought. Have you tried taking a flashlight and looking down into the timing belt cover to see if you see anything. I am new to DSM and everything but thought i would offer some thoughts. Where do you think the noise is coming from. Like a gerneral area.

When you said you eliminated the timing cover was it just the top or the whole cover from top to bottom? Like above said, where exactly is the "EEEEER" coming from?

As I said above, did you remove all of the covers or just the top and are all tensions right for each belt?

I would check the timing belt tensioner and idler pulleys. Sounds like one or both could have gone bad causing an excentricity in the rotation. This in turn could cause both the noise you are hearing and the belt wear.

well we took the timing cover off and noticed the tensioner was shot. the bottom half of the belt was extremely loose, but still tight across the cam gears. very lucky it did not jump time. anyways we replaced the tensioner, but the noise is still there. i will try to post a video of it tomorrow.

well, small good news, got the timing belt job done. fixed the previous owners crappy timing job, both pulley bolts were loose, oil pump pulley bolt was loose. anyways, no slack anywhere now. also replaced the cam and crank seals, fixed the leaks on the front of the motor.

but when i started it up and gave it a bit of gas, the motor made a bit of knocking noise. i really dont want to have to get another motor for this thing, how can i determine what kind of knock it is, so maybe i can fix it when i remove the oil pan to reseal that.. anyone?

Is the car and auto or a manual? this might sound kind of stupid b.c i dont kno how many other ppl have did this or not but i have a tranny rebuilt for my Pontiac and the bolts came loose and it sounded like the motor was knocking so we were tryin to find the knock the old school way, sence we were at the store when it started to happen, so we checked it with a piece of wood to try to hear where it was coming from( put the piece of wood ( old hammer handle) on the Valve cover and then put your ear on the other side), idk why or how this works sence the old man was the one doing it, but i guess this is what his dad tought him and he was a pretty good mechainc back in the day i guess, well it wasnt the motor knocking it was my fly wheel bolts, they came loose so we walked to the parts to get a socket and a wrench to tighten them and the knock went away,

its a manual. i was thinking that it was kinda coming from there, maybe. are the flywheel bolts reachable from underneath?
