Hey guys my 97 Eclipse Auto is in limp mode and I bought brand new input/output speed sensors. The input speed sensor we have found the location (on the front of the trans) but I can't find the location of the output sensor. Where exactly is it? Thanks!

The Input speed sensor is located underneath the oil cooler lines and just above the transmission solenoid pack. The output speed sensor is located closer to the left front wheel area of the transmission.

Thanks for your help, I'm going to try tomorrow to get this all done.

After replacing the speed sensors the car is still in limp mode! Also i get a CEL that says incorrect 2nd gear ratio. Arghhh someone please help!

I did use that tutorial to find the location of the speed sensor, great tutorial I must say! We did clear the memory but the check engine light came back on and the car went back into limp mode. I don't remember the exact code, I will get the exact code in a few days. A fellow DSM'er is helping me out with this. Thanks for your help guys I will report back as soon as I can.

Sorry for the delay, guys. Well it looks like I have a total of 6 codes:

P0700
P0301
P0134
P0733
P0732
P0731

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The P0700 is a code that is stored in the Engine computer to tell you that there are codes stored in the Transmission computer. You do not need to worry about that particular one, fix the trans related code and it will go away.

P0301 means that cylinder number one is misfiring. This can be due to corrosion on the coil post for #1, a bad plug or wire, poorly gapped plug, low compression (worn rings, burned valves, etc.), weak or clogged injector where it's electrically fine but not physically.

P0134 means that the upstream oxygen sensor is not switching properly and it's stuck. This could cause misfires and poor engine performance. Address this code before addressing a mis-fire code.

P0733
P0732
P0731

All of those codes deal with something related to the transmission. The P-07xx means transmission. I dont' have a transmission diagnostic manual in front of me but I would go out on a limb and say that it has to do with a sequence of gears malfunctioning. Most of the time the order of failures on these transmissions are as follows:
- One or both speed sensors fail
-Transmission solenoid pack fails
-Internal transmission failure such as back torque converter or worn out clutches

I would recomend finding out what those codes mean and then if they are related to shift solenoids then replace the transmission solenoid pack. If you do this you should clean out the area around it really well with brake cleaner, allow to dry, then blow out with compressed air prior to removal of the solenoid pack. I can provide additional information/tips if you decide to install it yourself. Clearing of the memory will be required again after you replace the pack to get the TCM out of limp mode.

Thanks for the help! This limp mode problem has been really pissing me off LOL. I'll see what I can do to get it fixed.

P0731, P0732, P0733 are the codes for the hydraulic pressure switch. these codes do enable limp mode. P0731 is for OD (overdrive) clutch, P0732 is clutches 2-4, and P0733 is for both OD and 2-4 clutches.

mitsu says "pressure switch fails to respond within specified time for given temperature range."

and probable causes are. low/high fluid level in transaxle. Malfunction of pressure switch assembly. Malfunction of TCM. worn pump. damaged or failed OD or 2-4 clutches. plugged filter. valve body leakage. internal solenoid leak. and torque converter lockup clutch failure. i hope this helps you a bit

That is a lot of help! I'll be sure to check the things you stated. Hopefully I can finally resolve this issue. Thanks!:)

Just an update here guys. I'll be taking the car into a transmission shop in the next couple days. I also had another question. I just did a full tune-up on the car including new timing belt, water pump, plugs, all fluids changed +new trans filter kit, etc. I still have to get a new upstream O2 sensor and I am just wondering would this O2 sensor have anything to do with limp mode? I've searched around on google and there are mixed opinions on this. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!

I have 1995 with a 97 gst spyder swap. Can't find the 2 input/output mentioned. Stuck in 3 rd gear.

Perhaps because this thread is about the automatic transmission in the 420A powered cars, so it doesn't apply to your car.
