Shep was definitely driving his car on the street occasionally when it was in the 7's.

That would explain his Ohio Plate that says 7SEC AWD :hellyeah:

There is a video of him on youtube driving it up by Norwalk Raceway at the DSM shootout.

Technically STREET LEGAL means you can get plates for it and DRIVE it on the street.
Shep set that bar a long time ago and so far I dont know anyone else that can pull off a 7 second pass in a car with plates on it.
I don't know of any other makes or models doing that either! Have you seen any 7 second chevys on the street haha??
I know guys with 10 second chevys that cant even get Plates.

not to start anything but how can he race at the strip if he is running 9's and after the 11 second barrier the track and or nhra requires a 6 point cage at least
that is how it is in indiana and nhra
just wondering if it is different in other states.
like i said this isn't a call out just wondering

Because Byron doesn't look at shit on cars. Your pretty much on your own for safety.

I don't think his car has been mobile or street legal for quite some time.(2006-2007)/ According to his website the car has been disassemble and was acid dipping it for fresh paint but once the car is put back together it wont be able to drive on the street. So i would say Shep is out of the question.

"topstreet" as he goes on this site has a 9.5 pass and I've seen him drive his car on the streets. But since that car doesn't really exist anymore I guess it doesn't count.

Byron dragway ;)

I've seen guys run 8s at US41 in Indiana in a tank top, shorts, no helmet, no cage even though its an IHRA track.
I know US66 in Joliet, IL is very strict and extremely picky in the tech department

I understand Shep's car is NOT street drivable anymore, but at one time he was able to drive it on the street and run a 7.97 on the track.

SO HE SET A RECORD right??

I mean you dont take away Michael Jordans record since he retired now do you?
Just because Shep is trying to go faster and faster doesn't mean he didnt set the bar.

So technically whether he is street legal now or not he still WAS the fastest Street legal DSM at one point...so Until someone can beat his time in a car with plates on it...I'd say he still holds the record for having the fastest street legal DSM.

Just My opinion I guess.

Keep in mind it's much easier to get a plate for something in Ohio than other states.

If you had a shopping cart with a 5hp Briggs on it, Ohio would probably sell you a license plate for it.

Alright, I'm going to make a clarification here and in my original post-

By street legal I meant- If a cop, or someone who knows the Federal Laws about emissions and whatnot, pulled you over and inspected your car, they couldn't give you a ticket. Because your car is "street legal."

I dodn't mean it can be driven on the streets. I know most of the people on here pull their cats and whatnot, but I am also fairly certain that, whether you have emissions testing requirements or not, it is illegal to remove a cat and run a straight pipe.

I also know that each state law is different. Maybe I should be looking into what the federal regs are.

Haha YES exactly.....Everyone yells sheps car is NOT street legal... but sheps car was street legal here where he lives and thats all that counts!!! Im not gonna make my car ready to pass cali tests if i live in Ohio. I'm sure my car would be illegal in Cali and many other states, but its street legal here! Unfortunately being in the city I still have to take an Emissions test but its No California Inspection. Here they dont even pop my hood open! :)

Now on the other hand, the county where shep lives there is NOO emissions test at all! If it has wheels and an engine you can get a plate and drive it! So Im willing to bet he could still get a plate and take it down the road a few times haha!

There is so many different definitions of street legal...but to me Sheps car still looks like a TALON...I think he could drive right past the cops in my town and they would just look at him go by and think to themselves "Damn ricer kids"

The fastest street legal DSM in Cali is probably a 15.3

So maybe the question should be who has the fastest street legal DSM in each state.

Usually one of the first mods to a dsm is going to make it illegal. So I guess a stock dsm would be what you are looking for.

You're right... not only is each state's law different, but each state enforces the law differently. Cops in Indiana don't check for anything whatsoever, so you could get away with more and stay 'street legal' here by that definition. In contrast, in the People's Republic of California, you'd probably get cited for having non-OEM floor mats. Heaven forbid should you have tinted windows or a fuzzy dice; they'd probably handcuff you and crush your car :p

Shep lives in Summit county which has E-check. I doubt he ever took the car in for that so technically it wasn't street legal.

His Shop is in North Lawrence Ohio...and that is actually Stark county NOT summit :D

Stark has NO e-check :thumb:

I'm not trying to get flamed here...just voicing my opinion.

Someone explain how he got plates then?? Obviously the BMV considered it street legal at one point LOL.

Hmm I didn't know North Lawrence was in Stark but I checked and you're right.

When has the BMV ever checked a car to see if it was street legal? If it's been registered on the street before it's pretty easy to get plates. Just don't tell them about all the goodies that keep it from being street legal. :p

OMG there is so much mis information on this thread. JS lives in Stark County for one, there is only a handful of counties in Ohio that still do emmisions testing, Stark is not one of them. Two emmisions testing in Ohio is only done on tail pipe emmsions, nothing elese physically has to check out except the cat, but you couldn't pass with out it anyhows. I passed many of times with the stock cat and all other emmsions equipment removed, with bigger fuel pumps, vacuum lines removed, fuel control etc etc. Three JS car has not been daily driven for a LONGGGG time. He runs a sold block since low 8s and 7s, so no you didn't seem him driving around on the streets who ever that was. When the car was runing high 9s he would occasionally drive it on the street, but he does work for himself so he doesn't exactly travel far for business, but way back when he did use to drive his talon to and fro occasionally to the dealership. Fourth all you have to do in a county that does not have e check in Ohio is present a title and you can gets tags, which would be true in any state I would imagine. So if my car was a Chevy Beretta turned into a 5 sec rwd drag car all I have to do is produce the title and bam I get tags.

As for the OP depending on state and county your defintion will vary but JS I would say holds the record of a high 8 sec car that could be driven on the streets daily if so choosen, but I am sure there are many of 9s cars out there, hell Curt Brown drove to the SO ran a 9 sec pass and then drove home hours away. That is the definition of a turn key 9 sec car.

Hahaha RIGHT...Thats what I was trying to say...I dont think Sheps car was EVER daily driver hahaha...I just said I have seen him drive it down the road up by Norwalk a few years ago at the Shootout. There is a video of it somewhere....But seriously its like a 60 second drive down Main street just to prove he could take it on the street! ...By NO means is it a Daily Driver ROFL.

I live in Cuyahoga county, they wont use the exhaust sniffer much on cars anymore...Its all done through the OBD2 port. They scan the computer for Codes and Monitors+ a physical check for a CAT.

I remember seeing Curt do this a few times. It was amazing!
