It looks like you have the spacer on the bottom bolt of the alt in the wrong spot. Causing the alt to lean out and touch the frame rail. Good luck with the kit, mine only lasted 3K before it broke off the block causing all kinds of damage.

Mine fit with room to spare using the outter pulley. You mentioned you have bits and pieces off of the car - is the driver's side motor mount loosened or maybe torn?

No, the motor is in place and torqued down to spec with new poly motormounts. Everything structural is in place.

And I dont believe that I have the spacer in the wrong spot, if I did then there is no way this could run off of the outside pulley, since the spacer is approx. equal to one belt width.

Call Jay tomorrow. Hes a cool guy to talk to. He picked up on my order for the rear toe eliminator kit, and was really helpful.

Thats the plan. As it sits right now my alternator is back in its original spot and I have removed the kit. Hopefully he can help me out, or refund my money.

You need to pund in the frame rail... I remeber lots of posts about this years ago...
All you need is a hammer, spray paint after is optional.
Or you can change the belt routing.

I have done tons of research on this and talked to someone at Jay racing about this because I didn't want my pully to hit my frame rail. In the 1g in a 2g kit that they sell, there is a spacer to move the power steering pully to the outside ribs on the water pump. This allows you to run the alt and water pump on the inside rib giving you more room. You have a 1g so this wont work because the 1g p.s. is a v belt vs the ribbed of a 2g. The only way on a 1g to utilize the inside ribs is to get a 2g power steering pump, 2g water pump pullies, and the relocation bracket or get rid of the powersteering.

All of which I am not doing. I am not hitting in the frame rail on a freshly painted engine bay... and I am not about to start swapping pulleys and pumps for this kit... If this is actually what I have to do then I do not want this kit.

Easy tiger, I am simply addressing other peoples posts, I am dialing right now

Guys,
I am not sure if he ever called me, but I'd like to clear up the confusion. The only way the alternator can have clearance problems like this is if the car was in an accident and the frame is tweaked. On a good condition chassis, the should be 1/8" to 3/16" clearance on the 1G kits. If your frame is already bent, you we need to massage the inner frame rail out using a method of your choice.

Thank you,

Hi Jay. I spoke with you Monday night and I'm glad you found this thread. I sent you an email with pics at [email protected]. Thanks in advance for your help. Joe

thats what i would do, just pound the wall enough to where its not hitting. It doesn't look like you need alot of space so a couple good wacks u should be good

on my 1g. No bashing framerail, fits perfect, great instructions and easy install. Thanks jay! I was the Canadian guy who bought it at the shootout 2009!

I just got done installing jays kit with a saturn alternator on my 1g and have less than 1/8 inch from the pulley to the rail, but there is clearance so I think I should be good. My car has never been in an accident and I have poly mounts all around. I will drive it for a couple days and see if it hits. If it does I will pull it out and wack the frame with a hammer a couple times.

Back from the dead. Greddy 1700, did you ever find a solution to this? I am having same issue. Poly mounts, car wasn't in an accident, and the insert I was given is NOT working. To line the ALT up with the out crank pulley and my water pump, I need to push the alt puller 1/4" into the freakin frame. Obviously putting the spacer in position to run off the inner portion of the crank pulley makes it so I can't run my water pump...

Installed the 1g kit on my Talon with poly motor mounts, easy install with no problems great product. Also installed the 2g kit with 6 bolt swap with no issues. Sure like the added room for the external waste gate. Jay offers great products and tools.

Can you send me a pic? [email protected]

Pics sent.

I just don't get it...I tried washers as I have seen on here, didn't work. Literally spent 1/2 this weekend trying to get it to work and it physically won't work. In order for the alt pulley, it would have to go like 1/4" into the frame. The spacer you provide would work to line the pulleys up would line the up I believe, if the frame wasn't an issue.

I'm just trying to figure out if anyone else has had any issues with the alt pulley contacting the frame.

I as well had this issue. It wasn't 1/4" into the frame. More like 1/16" or so. And if you are using power steering on a 1g with Saturn alt like I am. The bushing provided has to be put toward the passenger side. It WONT work on the other side with p/s pump. I had to offset the alternator with a smaller combination of lock washers and a nut. totalling about 1/8". I also had to put a flat washer on the passenger side of the bracket to prevent the dowel in the alternator from bottoming out before tightening down onto the bracket. This fixed my issue and got my alternator away from the frame on an UN WRECKED 1g.
My other concern with this that I haven't seen mentioned is that once the belt is tensioned properly, the adjuster bar only has about 1-1.5 threads holding it in. This is absolutely no good. I can see how this would cause issues from breaking under stress. So I am going to have to find a shorter belt. 1/2 to 3/4" should suffice, for me anyways.
For the price payed directly from Jay racing, I neither am happy with how much work it has took to "correctly" Install this relocation kit. There's apparently an issue with multiple people having exact systems. Maybe it's the case and or pulley is thicker on the saturn. I just hope this can help the ones with similar issue as I.

I meant driver side of the bracket. The bushing needs to go on the driver side of the bracket. Late night rambles.. sorry.

I, too have run into this issue. On a 1g using a Saturn alternator with the spacer on the driver side of the bracket, I think I had maybe 1/16" between the alt pulley and frame, which I'm not comfortable with. And it's also known to me that there has been no front end collisions on this car.

I am under a long build, so I can go with either fix listed here as I'm not running power steering.

I, do, however love the relocating bracket as it frees up room. To the one guy who had the bracket break on him.. . Are you 100% the mount was installed correctly and not over torqued? Or even having to much tension on the belt? Both of which could have caused the bracket to fail.

Just my . 02
