I think that I need to change my front motor mount and I just wanted to know what exactly does the front motor mount do? Is more keep the engine or for the transmission.

A combination of both. When you make a rapid throttle movement the engine will lunge forward or pull backward. Engaging or disengaging the clutch has a similar effect. In any case, the front and rear motor mounts prevent the entire powertrain from rotating too far forward or backward.

When I accelerate into second gear the car kind of shudders and when I let go of the gas and accelerate the car kind of shudders. Could that be the problem of bad front motor mount?

While you're messing with the front mount, you will notice that the bushing sleeve is bigger than the bolt the factory chose to stick through it. It's a good time to drill the brackets out and install a larger bolt that'll match the sleeve in the bushing.

I just went outside to look at the mount and I saw a hole at the top of the mount, I thought I lost a chunk of the rubber but when I look closely I think that is how the mount was made.

I decided to stick a screwdriver between the rubber and the mount and I was able to move the transmission a little is that normal or is my mount going bad?

If your engine moves by yanking on the valve cover with your bare hands then yes both are toast.
If your not exactly technically inclined you could order up a set of prothanes or solids before you take it out. Easier to just 'go upgrade' than to get it out and see, yep, its toast.

Does anyone have a picture of what their front mount looks like, so I can compare to my mount. I don't have a camera to take a picture of my mount.

Are you looking for just location? I don't know if this helps but my buddy makes solids and here's a pic of his solid on my daily;

Here's a comparison pic of the two mounts (although the stocker has the "guts" ripped out)

Thanks bullettdsm for the pictures, but do you by any chance have a picture that shows the mount installed in the car I am trying see how low is the center bolt from the bottom of the mount.

I finally got a good look in the daylight and it looks like the front mount has some hairline cracks on it, could that cause the problems I am having with the shudder?

Have you checked your other 3 mounts? What are their condition? Also, if you get a shudder on acceleration, than stops when you let off, I would look at your CV boot's on your axles.

If it's speed sensitive (starts at a certain speed than stops), it's a balance issue.

While your down there, inspect ALL of your balljoint's

i have the same problem (when Accelerating) my rear motor mount is toast look directly behind your intake manifold you should see your rear roll stopper or (motor mount) its what holds your tranny and motor from moving when accelerating or putting stress on your motor mitsubishi sells them for like $65 or you could go solid i am :):thumb:

I was thinking of buying the prothane inserts. Can I use those inserts on my damaged mount or should buy a new mount.

You should buy a new one, though I don't doubt you can get away with the Prothanes and a busted mount for a while.

Has anyone had any problems with an aftemarket mount or should I just buy an oem mount?

I love them. No wheel hop or engine movement. Have them on all 3 of my DSM's. The one on the NA (race car) has been on for at least three years with heavy abuse and no problems. Some people don't like the extra vibration, but I honestly don't notice it (again, I have the one pictured on my daily).

If you are interested, contact Steve at [email protected] and reference me.

I have solid mounts that I made out of the stock ones.I just bought huge washers and welded them up to the stock mount. It vibrated a bit more not too bad though. It helped with wheel hop but i still get it sometimes.I like them wayyyy better.I just turned my idle up a bit on dsmlink and you cant notice the extra vibes.:hellyeah:

LOL, that reminds me of the story of the guy who had a noise in his car he could not pin point. One day he told his buddy that he had finally fixed the problem. His buddy asked, "What was it and how did you fix it?" He answered, "Well, I don't really know what it was, but fixing it was really easy. All I had to do was turn up the radio." :D

Yeah, I know, yuks all around.

Prothane mounts are good! I use them only for show, so go with OEM motor mounts. If you change one mount, you might as well change all of them. They're in different areas, but it'll shake less in one mount area and more in another.
