All threads with vague titles regarding engine bay noises are now merged HERE.

If you honestly feel we can diagnose an internal engine problem from a poor description or low-quality video / audio sample, give it a shot.

I own a 1997 gst spyder and there is a ticking noise comming fron the engine. It comes and goes and it mostly sounds bad at idle. I have 97,000 miles on it and i change the oil regularly. I changed it about 2000 miles ago I need help to fix the problem.

Ya it kind of sounds like something spinning but iam not quite to sure, it does get louder with the rpms but goes away when i hit boost. i will try to post a vid of it soon

ya one of my friends said that it could be a pully but then someone else said that it could be a bent valve but he aint the smartest with cars idk, would a crankshaft pully make that noise and then go away once i push the clutch in,

Check the timing covers. My lower one is starting to bend in toward the engine and its just grazing the t belt.

as fas a how to check the crank pulley you need to remove the plastic from inside the driver side front fender behind the tire to access the pulley area. once you do this you should have a good view of the pulley. grab a flash light and inspect the rubber center section of the pulley thats where they start to seperate. i also would take something like white nail polish and make a straight line from the top to the bottom of the pulley so that you can check it again after driveing it for a bit and make sure the lines all still match up "sometimes the pully will actually spin freely between the rubber and metal part of the pulley" which if that is the case you know that the pully needs to be replaced. if you have any other questions feel free to pm me as i just replaced my pulley last weekend so if you run into problems i could try to help you out.

I searched the site and couldn't find anything on what it is that my car is doing. I have a oem (bs removed) rebuilt 6 bolt with about 7k on it. i was driving it hard at the top of fourth and the engine was pulling hard and had a slight hesitation for a split second and continued pulling hard after that. When I noticed the hesitation I shutdown and babied it home. the next morning I went to move my car into the garage and noticed a louder than normal lifter tick/knocking noise and some constant smoke that smells a bit like oil and gas. car started on the first turnover and pulled into garage just fine. I pulled the valve cover to see if anything was loose and it seemed to check out fine from what I could see. I drained the oil through a screen and didnt find any obvious metal, although the oil did seem like it had a kind of slight shine to it and had a slight gas smell. I have never smelt oil or observed it really so I dont know what is normal. I'm not getting any knock counts at idle or with a slight rev on my logger. but I'm stumped and cant seem to find the noise, knock, tick, or whatever the hell it is. I'm thinking its not rod knock because its not a loud hollow clunking like most rod knock is. I'm doing a compression test later today. anyone have any suggestions? Please help

it makes like a vibrating noise like something that spins is vibrating would it still be the crankshaft pulley and would it go away when i hit boost

Oil is not supposed to smell like gas. If you have gas in your oil then its getting past either the valve seals or piston rings or possibly a hole in the piston, maybe a burnt valve. Post your compression test results.

DO u think that it could also maybe be a bearing, becasue i just put a starter in my car and i havent checked the crankl pulley yet but i will definatly check to see if it is thepulley but would a bearing make a noise like that.

When i'm driving around grandma style around 45-65 kph usualy in second gear sometimes third if i am having a shuttering noise happen and as soon as i hear it i go to a higher gear and it goes away. This usually only happens if im staying at a constant speed in a lower gear for a period of time. Im getting sick of shifting back and forth between gears to make this stop. Does anyone have any idea's on what it might be?

since no one has responded on this one, ill take a stab at it.

yoke issues, maybe something around the drive shaft area.

Without actually hearing the noise, it would be difficult to respond. However, these transmissions are usually bad for input bearings and counter gear bearings. If either starts going bad, and they will. You can encounter problems. Are there any howling/growling noises? Being as it goes away in the higher gears, I would rule out anything pretty much but the transmission.

But that's my long distance guess.

Good Luck

My car is making a wierd noise. The other day I was just driving around for a little bit. Came back home and parked. Went back outside and was about to leave, so I started the car. After I started the car it started to make like a clanking noise. It didnt go with the rpms it just made noise randomly but continously. The clanking went away. Now after about 2k rpm it starts to sound like its vibrating or buzzing. What do you think it could be?

Just a random clanking? This is just a total shot in the dark, but take the VC off...maybe there's a rocker bouncing around in there? I seem to recall something similar happening to someone else...

Haven't done any engine work. All I've done to the car since I've had it was just the intake, 3in catback, and type s bov. I've thought of it being maybe a rocker but the noise sounded like it was coming from the driver side of the motor near the back. Clanking noise went away and now theres like a vibrating or buzzing noise going on.
I've started reading about balance shafts. I dont know if that could be the problem or not.
This isnt my car but this is what it sounds like when you rev it up to around 2k-2.5k rpm.

Check you harmonic dampener or "crank pulley" the rubber may have rotted out in there. Are you getting any belt squeeling?
