so i was driving the other day and when i started from a stop sign, i heard and felt what seemed like a CV axle about to fail. i have had this happen in another car, so the noise was very familiar. it started out of no where.

i got underneath the car yesterday to confirm that my axle needed replaced, but the axles look fine. none of the boots are broken and everything looks normal underneath the car. there is some leaking fluid where the engine and the tranny meet, but it doesnt smell like tranny fluid and i checked my oil and its still full from my last oil change a few weeks ago. i also changed the tranny fluid. i put in the Mopar ATF+4 from the dealership, just like everyone says your supposed to with the 2g 5spd. it hasnt given me any trouble and its not a major leak. the noises only come when i go above 3000 rpm or try to launch the car any faster that normal driving. i have done 55mph on highways and there are no noises, so it seems to rely on engine speed...

im worried the tranny is going out, the noises seems to swtich from side to side. at first it was on passenger side, and last night it seemed to be coming from the drivers side. the noises seem to come from the CV axle/transmission area (hence my original dianosis). is it possible that something is wrong with the CV axles and they are causing the noises and hesitation, as if the axles are slipping in the tranny or wheels? or do i have a more major issue? like a tranny..... :(

:ohdamn:

Have you checked your ball joints by chance. That was my first impression upon reading your description. But being that its speed related makes me think other wise. I had thought mine were going out b/c of the "clunking" sound when going around a turn or accelerating from a stop, turned out to be ball joints instead of the CV.

all 4 lower control arms (2 on each side) are new. the dealership replaced the ones that were covered by the recall and the other ones and i replaced myself.

and i guess i worded it wrong, its not necesarily speed related, just acceleration related. when i try to accelerate quickly, like getting into traffic on a busy road, the noise is horrible. im not trying to haul ass or anything when i do this. the noise is definately on the driver side now... its like a ghost.

any other areas i should check out?

tranny? :(

Is the sound your hearing when accelerating one loud "thump" or is it something else. If it is just a thump it is possible that the rear motor mount is bad and when you accelerate its shifting all the weight from the the motor to the bad mount and that is where the noise could be coming from.

Never assume the worst first

Find a smooth parking lot. Turn your wheels to the right and slowly accelerate. If you hear a click click click upon take off, it's likely the cv joints. The boots do not have to be torn for the joint to be bad. Be sure to turn the wheels to the left and try again. If it goes away when you are steering straight ahead then it's likely the outer joints. This does not affect the inner joints. You may have to jack the vehicle up and support it please with jack stands. Put one hand on the axle and the other on the inner joint where it goes into the transmission. Hold the joint and move the axle. If you experience more movement than what you might think normal, then that's likely the problem. You may have to look at a known good setup to judge yours by.

Good Luck

CV axles can be bad regardless if the boot is torn.

atf+4 is for automatic transmissions. You put gear oil in your 5 speed. As for the problem, does it jerk the car when it does it? I had the same thing happen to me on the SS, and it turned out I exploded the differential, and shot shrapnel all through the bellhousing. Gear oil was leaking out from the a hole the shrapnel put through the bellhousing. The hole was on the inside (where the clutch is) and it dripped down and leaked through the crack between the engine and trans.

i will check the axles again. the car was hot when i checked last time so i didnt want to be reaching up near the exhaust at the time.

There is a recall on the ball joints?

the ball joints in the straight lower control arms (there is also a curved one) were defective and would get worn out faster than normal. they are covered by the dealership.

i made the dealership check 3 times if ATF+4 was the right stuff, then i checked on this site and then i bought the ATF+4. when i drained my tranny, ATF+4 came out, so thats what it needs. you have to use the dealership's fluid for the 5spd trannies

Print it off and show them it is possible that your vehicle doesnt have the recall they search by VINS.
