I have taken a look at the other threads and did not really find the answer to my question. So what im interested in knowing is, what are the chances of crankwalk happening on a 99 GSX. Its got 78ooomiles. Im looking to buy it of the first owner, and there is no warranty. I do not have the money to buy a new engine if I buy this car. And I also cant risk buying this car then loosing my motor to crankwalk 2 months down the road. So mainly im asking these questions:

Stock: What are the chances of experiencing crankwalk with giving it a bit of shit but still taking good care of the car.

Minor Mods: What are the chances if I do smaller mods like exhaust, bov, intake front mount and possibly a small turbo upgrade?

And is there anything I can do right away, like replacing the crankshaft and what ever else needed on the exsisting motor right away to supress the problem.

Thank you to anyone who takes there time out to help me with this.

I picked up a 1997 GSX from the first owner completely stock with 85k miles. I have had real good luck. It is hard finding a 1 Owner Eclipse GSX. I would say go for it.

I'm just wondering but how much are you paying for it.

i dont think you really need to worry about it to much it is kinda an exaggerrated problem. with that being said it could happen but i wouldnt worry about it unless it has signs of it. personnally i bought my 97 from the original owner with 84k on it now i have 94k on it with evo16 all piping fmic 560cc inj safc2 3"exhaust and no signs of crank walk. youll hear this alot from people on here.

Crank walk can happen to anyone at any time, stock motors as well as modified ones. You can search and find tons of info on the exact setups miles and everything.

From what I understand, 98-99 blocks were changed in some way that helped suppress it so it did not happen nearly as much in those years.

You usually have alot of time to get it fixed from the initial signs of it to it completely dying.

99's have the best designed thrust bearing out of any 7 bolt, so you have the lowest chance of crankwalk out of any 2g. I personally wouldn't worry too much about it, but it is a possibility. If you are worried about it see if you can either take it to a mechanic to get it checked out (drop the pan and check the crank for play) or if you can test drive it check and make sure that the clutch pedal doesn't stick down on left hand turns (I'm assuming its a manual, if it's an auto you have even less to worry about).
Just so you know, more power doesn't cause crankwalk, more pressure on the thrust bearings does. That means you only really need to worry about more clutch pressure. That being said, if you mod the car you will need to upgrade your drivetrain in order to hold the extra power. Every car is different, we can't tell you that it will walk if you do x y and z. There are plenty of stock 7 bolts putting down lots of power, and then there are those like ours that walked when they were totally stock, it's kinda a crapshoot. If you wanted to you could rebuild the engine, but that would cost money. good luck, hope that helped.

to 1997_GSX. I am paying $3500 canadian. I am getting really lucky and She is going back to Iraq in the army. I currently own a 1994 Integra, with some mods. But it needs body work, since honda knows how to set that one up. ahah. Anyways I was looking to get this eclipse, since its my favourite car, and Ive always wanted it. But I bought a 1997GST last summer, and the first day, i had crankwalk, sold the car back to the guy, but it was very unlucky on my part.

And it is good to hear that it is exagerated, which is understandable. Since people that do not get crankwalk wont make forums and show off how they do not get crankwalk, LOL.

Furthermore, I was wondering if stronger bearings or anything could just help prevent it from happening all together. because spending 500 to help prevent it is something I would invest in. Thank you for the help.

Ya im really lucky. I am just waiting for the VIN number of the car so I can get it checked out, then I get this moving. Its green right now from the factory, and its been lady driven and well taken care of. So if this deal goes thru I will be more then happy. Just being in college and owing the money to the bank I do, I cant really afford extra repair costs. Like I said I have an integra, its a huge price difference in gas, insurance, and just taking care of it.

that car sounds like a steal and a half... i wouldnt worry about a crank walk at all man... my car has 220K mi and still running like a champ :thumb:

is it a 5speed car or auto from what ive read you dont get crankwalk from an auto. crankwalk comes from the presure of the clutch pushing on the crank so if you have a big clutch your chances are higher

99 gsx here 106k miles and goin from 16g to sbr gt12 setup. no signs of cw and proper maintenance always....shell treat you right..

Hell even if it does c walk you can just throw in another 7 bolt block (cheaap) and probably get another 40k+ miles, or swap in a 6 bolt block on the 2g head and call it a day.

If it was going to walk, chances are it would have already... But with that said, I would play it safe, and with any large purchase expect the worst, and be prepared. If you going to college, and this is your DD, I would look elsewhere. Not saying these cars aren't reliable.. im just saying I treat them more as a classic than a daily commuter vehicle. :D

HAHAHA Crankwalk... Man the 99 GSX has the BEST numbers as far as CW problems, aside from 6-Bolts. Im pretty sure your in the clear.

If you want to test it, if its a manual, take her for a hard run and make a few hard LEFT turns and if the clutch pedal sticks, its ####ed. But either way, that is a steal. I just wish that was in St. Louis, I would buy it even if it was Crankwalkin :hellyeah:

crankwalk is overratted. Its not as bad as people make it sound.

I have a buddy with a 96 I think and it walked but I haven't seen any other crank walked motor.
