i was wondering if theres any real difference between ebay cold air intakes and expensive ones like AEM or Injen? im sure theres a little more difference on turbo cars but mines a non turbo.

The only difference might be the material used for the pipe and the type of air filter that is used. Other than that, it's all the same thing.
Biggest difference ? Name brand badge on it.

I think someone posted a write up in the tech area, but I think mainly about the quality. I dont remeber seeing anything about performance gains, or not proved at least

Yes it might give you more horsepower, but like .1 more hp. Just buy an ebay. I got an ebay on my 420a and i just slapped a k&n sticker they dont even its an ebay, but i still tell them its a ebay.(some dont believe it)

I wouldn't Bother buying a Cold Air Intake unless you have a front mounted intercooler. The Ebay Cold air intakes are crap. I would suggest investing in more useful things like a boost controller and a nice TB elbow and upper intercooler piping.

Do you have any proof that they are crap?

I just installed a Intake on my talon I purchased off ebay, I paid a total of 43 bucks and couldn't be any happier ! I think your paying for the name when you buy those other intakes but thats my .02 cents ! :thumb:

The reason I went with dejon intake and paid more was so that I could get it powdercoated to match the UICP. I also got the UICP at the same time I bought the intake and I saved some money with the package deal :hellyeah:

Yah but the deal is he has a 91 talon tsi and he is looking at a Intake for a 95-99.
I searched ebay before posting and the "intakes" for the 1gs looked like they were NT, half assed, or they had no recirculation port, buying one of these would suck.
I say you are much better off buying a namebrand intake pipe for a 1g, because in most cases you get what you pay for.
Dejon tool intake pipes are nice, and they make nice ones that fit where your stock intake pipe was.

Front mount on a N/T thats a great idea. LOL...

what?

because in most cases you get what you pay for.

You said it, in MOST CASES, but NOT ALL. A name-brand intake isn't really going to make a difference vs. an ebay intake. If anything, the filter will be the most significant difference factor.

The only main difference is the name brand.

I personally would go for the name brand, but its up to you!

Enjoy your intake!

The difference between them is that with ebay you are chancing getting something that doesnt fit, and may not have the right ports on it you need, or you may score. Name Brand you will know exactly what you are getting, but you will pay the price. I highly recommend you watch classifieds for intake pipes, just this last week or so someone sold a dejon intake for 60ish dollars.

thanks for the input everyone. the intake is actually for my 2g n/t. sad i know. but i will be getting an ebay intake for my talon soon. i already got the clutch, intercooler piping, full exhaust, and ported manifold.

In all honesty, Cold Air Intakes on non-turbo cars are a complete waste of money.

When I first bought my '97 GS back in 2001, I was all excited to bolt on as many ridiculous parts as possible. The car is now almost totally stock as those parts either began to fail or didn't prove to be worthy.

I installed an AEM Cold Air Intake on the GS not long after I got the car. It was one of the true CAI's that relocated the air filter behind the front bumper. I got it used on eBay for cheap, so I figured I had nothing to lose. One of the first things I noticed was a nice, pronounced "gulping" sound when opening the throttle that wasn't audible with the stock intake. Upon hitting the road for the first time, I noticed no "seat of the pants" increase in power. If the CAI did give the car more power, I sure as hell couldn't tell. It would take a dyno that reads down to the thousandths of one horsepower to notice a worthwhile increase....but it sure did look cool when you opened the hood.

I should mention that my fuel mileage went down with the AEM Cold Air Intake installed....most likely because all of the cold air that was reaching my intake manifold required more fuel in order to be ignited. Add to that a concern that anytime it rained really hard there was always a possibility that you would suck water into the filter if the road became somewhat flooded and hydrolock your engine. In western PA it rains all the time, so this was an important issue. Lastly, the filter being positioned so close to the road surface meant that it would draw up all types of leaves, road grime, and small rodents, requiring constant filter cleaning.

After about a year and a half, I'd had enough of looking cool....the AEM CAI was removed and sold on eBay for more than I paid for it (thankfully). The profits from the sale were used to buy a new K&N panel replacement filter for the stock airbox, which was reinstalled and is still on the car to this day. My fuel mileage came back, and my car runs as good as it ever did.

Turbo cars are a different story- the colder the air going into the filter, the better. Air intake temps are sensed by the MAS pre-intercooler on these cars, so you could have the most efficient intercooler in the world but you'll still have timing pulled if your ECU's seeing 130* intake temps.

i just installed an ebay cold air intake, and its great, the only thing im worried about is hydrolock, or the filter getting too wet, my area is getting alot of rain right now and when i got home from driving, my filter was soaked, should i consider buying a cover, or should i just not worry about it?
