on my 3rd alternator belt 2 out of 3 were gatorbacks less than a week old....there has to be somthing wrong in there.

p.s whats the order im suppose to tighten the alternator screws? im puttin in a new one as we speek

Make sure you line the belt up correctly and don't over-tighten the belt. Make sure the ps pulley isn't bent or wobbling as well.

IM unsure about the screw orders but could you possibly make the tension too tight?

my belt poped and i think its bc the temporary screw i had in ( the long one that goes through horizontialy if ## looking at the engine with the hood up )got in the way of the belt .

i have it out and its cross threaded so i cant just put it back in , but my question is how long will my belts last, im 20 miles away from home ....### help asap with answers.

yes alternator belt , and i have the tensioner and w.e the other screw is on fine its just missing the long one in the way back of the alternator....think i can make it home ?

Yes that will be no problem. I had been without that screw once when i had my 1st gen talon and ran like that for a week going back and forth from work. You'll be fine to get home.

A week ago i replaced my Alternator, the next day my belt snapped and a long screw(not the tensioner )

i replaced the belt and made sure it was tight , it still squeeked but it ran and seemed to be fixced , now a week later it snapped again, i replaced it and it snapped again.

i need to get to the bottem of this before i go broke, also today i noticed that the lower pulley that goes around the alternator belt was moving in and out a bit if u watched while the car was running .

My guess is its either the new alternator or the pulley....what do you guys think and how can i be sure?

also whats the name of that pulley?

It's called a harmonic balancer or crank pulley. They are very common items to go bad on our cars. They have a rubber insert between the two parts and it cracks and goes bad. Replace it and get back to us.

the screw that pulls the belt tighter? your fine if thats the one your talking about

im flippin out right now , please any info is appreciated

Sounds to me like your Damper pulley is seperating. Is it the lower pulley that is centered on the engine right above the oil pan? If so you need to replace that thing asap. Easy fix now but if it grenades it can take a bunch of crap out with it.

Beat me to it.

Hes probably right, Crankwalk is overrated and I thought that it happens to mostly Man. Cars. Something to do with a heavy clutch.

I had my crank pulley separate on me about 2 years ago and my car has been down ever since. Hopefully I will have it back together later this year. The movement you described sounds very much like a worn out crank pulley. Crankwalk by my understanding is the in-out movement of the crankshaft. It is a very odd thing in that since in is a in-out play symptoms can vary depending on if you're turning left or right, on the clutch or off. I've never experienced crankwalk but it does not sound like that's what you have.

ryea, its the pulley that has room for 2 belts , if thats all thats wrong how much is one of these and how hard is it to install....

Please fill out your car details in the profile.

Check some vendors for a new OEM harmonic balancer.

im reading that over tightinng the belt may cause the harmonic balencer to go though , the last belt was instaled by a mechanic and he reallly made it tight , so i belive he might of caused this to break but...its not the original problem , my harmonic balencer being off wouldnt cause belts to snap clean in half would it ? im thinking somthing be it the balencer or the new alternator is locking up causeing them to snap.

thoughts?
