What is the widest/best tire brand/size i can get for optimum traction and handling?
I was hoping I could fit 255 Hoosier R6's

1. My car is a:
b) 2g DSM

2. My wheel size is:
Diameter: _17____
Width: __8___
Offset: _48mm____
Backspacing: 6.33"

3. My current or future suspension height will be lowered

b) One to 1.5 inches

4. If suspension is lowered,
a) Rear camber will be adjusted to less than 1° negative.

5. Rear fender flange rolling:
a) My fenders are rolled or will be if necessary.

6. My driving style is:
c) Street and Strip and road race

7. I have searched for and read the FAQ's, Tech Articles, and threads on wheel and tire fitment:
a) Yes, but I just need someone with experience to validate my choices.

235/40/17 will fit on the rims, and it shouldnt rub, it will keep the same overall height as the tires you have and give you a slightly larger contact area, but it will however give you more rolling resistance decreasing your mpg, but better traction

235's on a 6.5" rim is pushing it. I would recommend at least a 7.5" wide rim. Otherwise stick with the 215's or 225's at the most.

The +48mm offset is really killing you. 255's on a 8" wide rim will rub on the inside.

Whoops.. sorry, i guess I didn't read that page carefully enough. Am I correct that if I can find the wheels i referenced above in a +36mm offset that I can at least fit 245/40/17 Hoosier R6's on my 2g?

Those will be a little close to the rear fenders but should fit if they are rolled.

I originally was going to go for just drag racing. But the goal for my car now is an all around performing (handling and straight line). A light set of 17's (Enkei RPF1's) on a sticky, light tire seems to be a good compromise between drag racing, handling. My eventual goal is to run 10's once I build the engine, and to also be able to hit the turns well.

I just don't know what rim width or size tire to go with for a good compromise between occaissional drag racing, and having a car that can handle too. I'm not doing autocross or anything though.

I'm set on Enkei RPF1's, 17's.

I need to know what width I should go with, I ws thinking 17x7.5 or 17x8. But some people have suggested wider.

For the tire I was thinking 225/45/17, 225/50/17, or even 235/45/17. My tires now on my stock GSX wheels are 215/50/17, and they fit perfectly with the Tokico kit. I just want the best tire/wheel combo for my needs that I won't have a problem fitting.

Thanks in advance.

I'd like to do a 225/45/17 on a 17x7.5. But the only offset Enkei offers is +48 for a 7.5 (I wish they offered a 40 or 45).

According to this, that combo won't fit right and will cause me to rub:

So b/c of that I'm stuck either doing a 17x7 or 17x8 wheel.

Does that sound correct?

1. My car is a:
b) 2g DSM

2. My wheel size is:
Diameter: 18"
Width: 7
Offset: 42 Will use spacers if need be.

3. My current or future suspension height will be lowered
c) 1 to 1.5 inches

cheepy coil overs (NEX)

4. If suspension is lowered,
Camber will be adjusted.

5. Rear fender flange rolling:
b) I will roll the fenders. getting other wheels later

6. My driving style is:
c) Street and Strip.

My main question is how wide can I get on these rims. will a 235/??/18 fit or am i stuck with 225's.
really would like 235's
thanks

Hunh?

You should be fine with the 225/45/17's on +48mm offset. Forget about tire chains though.

It's the tire that's hard to fit, not the wheel.

I think you'll find that all 235/40/18's require an 8-inch width wheel, so their out. That leaves 225/40/18, an easy fit.

Asking to fit a P245/40/18 tire. Figure since the coilovers are alot stiffer I could. I fit 225/40's with my old tokico setup lowered about 2" without and rubbing.

Well that was just judging from that link I provided. The calculator came out to over 6.8, which was the magic number for being very, very close and maybe not fitting.

But I looked over this again: http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/fre...tions/286685-will-these-wheels-tires-fit.html

It assumes no more than a 1.5" drop. At .25" more, that would be about 6mm less clearance. Taking that 6mm less into consideration, it appears that a 225/45/17 on a 48mm offset will just barely fit with just 4mm of clearance at the knuckle and plenty at the fender.

But if I went with a 45mm offset (17x8 wheel), same tire, I'd be at 7mm of clearance at the knuckle and plenty at the fender. I guess I should be fine either way. I'll prob go with the 17x8 though to be on the safe side, and also b/c it will probably line up with the wheel wells much better.

I should have paid closer attention to that great chart before. I'm glad you went to the trouble of making it. Thank you for that.

Lowering doesn't change any of the clearances. Changing camber after lowering does but only at the fender. With that high offset, you've got enough clearance at the fender for a __________ (fill in appropriate humorous noun).

245/40/18's are BIG tires, diameter wise. The would fit with fender rolling but 245/35/40 might be better. If you want to avoid fender rolling, stay with the 225/40/18's.

:coy:

Well, that clears that up. I'm just going to be moving camber back to within stock spec.

According to that chart then, I could fit a 235/45 tire at either 48mm or 45mm if I wanted to, or I could go with a 225/50 instead of 45 for more sidewall at either offset - without fender rolling, which I want to stay away from. That definitely gives me more options. Only question now is which suits my driving style (drag racing/some handling) the best? With such little differences, it may not even matter much.

Thank you for the help.

I found a local with a set of rpf1's for sale with Falken RT-615 255/40R17 tires on them. I've done some searching and it seems like they should fit if I understand right but I'm a little confused. Thanks in advance!

Currently stock. Thinking some ksports in the near future, so maybe 1"-1.75". Don't want a slammed look but better handling and a little better looking than stock.

4. If suspension is lowered.
Whatever I can get away with, still not sure

5. Rear fender flange rolling:
a) My fenders are rolled or will be if necessary.
I have no problem with rolling if I would need to.

6. My driving style is:
c) Street and Strip.
Mostly street, maybe 1-2 trips to the track a year and probably get another set of wheels.

7. I have searched for and read the FAQ's, Tech Articles, and threads on wheel and tire fitment:
a) Yes, but I just need someone with experience to validate my choices.

From the math, you would have about the thickness of a penny for clearance on either side of the tire. Unless you can test fit them before purchasing or you are prepared to deal with rubbing by using spacers or aggressive fender rolling or increasing negative camber, it would be better to choose a safer fiting combination.

So does that mean fitment is out of the question for a 1g even w/ coilovers?

I went ahead and got 17x8 +38mm Enkei RPF-1's with 245/45 Hankook RS-2 tires. With my K-Sport coilovers the inner clearance is about 3/4in from the spring perch. The outside edge sticks out about 10mm on unrolled fender and no alignment. Good luck with 17x9's, hope you have some stiff springs LOL.

Hey all, I'm wanting to buy a new set of rims and tires for my GSX. The goal is maximum grip, street/strip use. My current setup is 17" Rims with 225/45/R17 tires. Thanks!

I am either looking at some 16's or 17's, depending on which size will give me the best performance. I want the widest tires I can fit without having to worry about scrubbing or rubbing the fenders. Thanks in advance!
