I am in the market for a 2g dsm, have been looking for a while, when i came across this ad.

"98 gst eclipse
118 k miles
standard power

the not so good
will need tires soon ... with in 10k miles
clutch is weak but still good

this car started life as a gsx TURBO ALL WHEEL DRIVE but the rear end went out on it.
rather them replace the diff i removed it with the drive shaft and rear half shafts.
car runs great u would never know it was AWD

i still have all parts i removed"

Is it safe to drive the car around like that? Is that something to stay away from, or is this commonly done? Didn't find too much info doing a search. Thanks for the help.

Without the driveshaft being in the transfer case, I'm curious as to what he did to keep the fluid from coming out of the transfer case. If he just ran it dry, then I wouldn't be surprised if he added a locked up transfer case to the list of broken stuff soon.

There are proper ways to run an AWD car as a FWD car, but I'm not positive on what has to be done to achive this.

Search around on here for AWD to FWD swaps. Plenty of people have been in this same situation and have done the same exact thing.

With the proper mod's it should be fine. But if the proper things weren't done, then expect to be putting a lot of money into a trans/transfercase/differential combo!

That would be quite a bit of money.

EDIT - I know this isn't the best reference but it mentions something on it.

Keep searching and you'll find your answer.

i asked about the transfer case and fluid, this was his response. "he transfer case is bolted to the side of the transmission and has its own fluid so all i did was un bolt the transfer case....### so the 2 front drive shafts come out of the tranny like a normal
FWD tranny and there's a shaft that sticks out the side were the transfer case bolts to since they dont share oli theres worreis or leaks".

Yes, everything is removed, transfer case, drive shaft, rear end. My question is basically is it safe for the car to be driven like that?

I plan put it back to awd if i purchase it, i just dont want to go and have to replace the transmission too though.

This would have to have something to "lock" the center diff. A VCE or a welded center diff.

To put an answer to your question I would say it would not be safe to drive the car without any modifications done for a AWD to FWD swap.

Now you could ask him how long he's been driving the car like this and maybe get a feel for the logevity that way?

If infact he's an honest seller.......?
