My friend is super stubborn and wants to buy his buddies 2g 1995 talon fwd talon auto. he thinks he can make it awd 5 speed for cheap and easy.

now mind you he has done countless motor/trans swaps changes, working on them.

what has to be done so i can show him how hard it is. or how easy and were going to try it.

I/we know you have to swap pretty much the whole rear axle and add trans, T-case driveshaft etc.

but what else?

gas tank?

exhaust?

Youre gonna need to figure out how to add a clutch pedal in there too. It would probably just be cheaper to get the AWD model. With the right mods, an auto could be pretty quick. Ive seen a pretty mildly modded auto run a mid 11 at my altitude.

Have him log on to your account and search on this site where this question has been answered many times before explaining how it is not an easy thing, nor a cheap thing to do.

it took me a month to do the swap. heres a basic rundown off the top of my head.

replace flywheel
replace starter plate
replace trans
swap entire rear subframe
run new ebrake cables
swap to AWD exhaust
swap to AWD gas tank
cut off old gas tank brackets
gut the inside of car to cut holes into frame and drop in new subframe bolts
cut off exhaust brackets and weld on AWD driveshaft brackets in place

youre gonna be doing ALOT of grinding and welding. youre gonna curse your head off as you almost set yourself on fire repeatedly while youre welding and grinding shit under the car. BASICALLY, you have to strip down the car to the bare frame, modify most of the brackets under the car, cut into the frame and drop in new subframe bolts, then replace everything with AWD components.

Maybe this will illustrate how bad of idea it is, unless your buddy wants to throw money away.
To convert to AWD you need,

Tranny
Tranny mount and bracket
Front motor mount and bracket
3 front cross members
Main suspension cross member
Rear motor mount and bracket
Steering column
Flywheel and backing plate
Drive shaft and bearings
Entire rear suspension, disc to disc
Rear brake lines
E-brake lines
Gas tank assy and brackets
Fuel pump assy
Rear shocks
Front steering knuckles
Entire exhaust system
Besides changing 1/2 the parts on the car, the major fabrication hassles were building the front mounts for the rear suspension crossmember, modifying the front frame rails for the crossmember, and moving the rear upper shock mounting locations back about 2 inches

Then comes time for the conversion to Manual,

MT transfercase
The rear Diff
All 4 CV shafts and the intermediate shaft
Shifter Cables
Shifter
Clutch peddle assemble and brake pedal assembly
Clutch Master
Clutch slave
Clutch SS braided hose
Clutch

Sorry, but just tell him to get an AWD,by the time he gets all those parts,it will equal up as buying a complete awd car

that's the best way to put it and explain it... the swap is just not worth it for everything you have to do when you'll pay just as much if not less by just buying one that's AWD already... easier task is to buy a shell and just build a motor and stuff and drop that in. :thumb:

IDK about the 2G, but on the 1G the AWD is a whole different body from the doors back. Your friend is going to be fabricating 1/2 of an entire car by hand. That is really silly considering that there is a factory that produced many thousand copies of exactly what your friend is looking for. Those machines are currently dropping like a rock in price/value as they start approaching 15 years old.
I second what everyone else said, and agree that your friend is stubborn.
P.S.: turbos and torque converters are a legendary complement to each other. The stall speed of the converter kind-of cancels out the effect of turbo-lag. I'd be looking for one, except I'm certain that I'd destroy my trans in my MT eclipse by trying to jam it into gear without using the clutch. It's very confusing to have two identical cars, except one has a clutch and one doesn't.

Let him win the arguement or debate ;) . I found out that mine and everyone else's stubborness just has to see for itself.

Yeah with the money he would have to spend and the time spent he could buy a clean 2g awd. So tell him unless he wants a project and to throw money out there for no good reason just get a awd and be happy. Even if its a auto awd and he wanted to do a 5-spd swap its easier because he would have to replace the rear diff. because of the gears and the transfer case, along with the pedals, lines etc.
