After a year of fixing everything wrong with the car, the guy before me obviously didn't have a clue, I thought I'd be free a clear of major mechanical issues. That was until the turbo started to smoke like a burning forest fire. After I asked you guys for advice on what new turbo to get I'm a couple of days away from installing a new Evo III Big16g. But wanted to share with you the outcome of sloppy maintenance (not mine by the way). I pulled the turbo apart and you can see the inside of the inlet side is destroyed and the exhaust side baffles me as to how this thing ran for as long as it did. I fly jets for a living and if this happened to one of my engines it would have been a disaster movie by now.

Thanks for all the advice and hopefully this will remind those who don't, to start doing some good regular maintenance.

I had this thing drained and figured I was this far torn down I would pull the oil pan off and fix the little weep leak it had. I had only just put a new filter and changed over to Mobil synthetic about 3 months before this happened. So now that the bottom side is redone I'll be putting another new filter and fresh oil as soon as I get the turbo on. I have seen some broken parts in my time, but nothing this disgusting.

Looking forward to feeling the new power of a working turbo.

Holy crap, I've seen some dead turbos, but wow. It almost looks like they tried to clip it with like a band saw on the exhaust side. Is that a 14b? Any chance we can get some pictures of the insides of the housings? I'm interested in how bad the intake housing is if it did that to the turbine.

The same thing happend to my stock turbo because i put to much oil in the car....ooops. It was a good reason to put the big 16g in my GSx and i love it.

Yeah this is what happens when nobs Don't do the proper maintenance. The next owner gets stuck with there headache LOL.At least you had a upgrade planned before it happened. It ranks in my top five turbo's Ive seen destroyed. But it was a matter of time as bad as the build up is and looks like the bearings where slowly grooving your turbine shaft.

I can vouch that your going to like the 16g upgrade once its done.
Spools a little later but a pretty good difference in power.
Good luck

Turbo looks in perfect shape, that is what it's supposed to be like.

j/k My stocker did that, when the t25 was going bad it started to chew on the inlet cover and smoke like a mofo.

The compressor wheel is obviously ruined, the turbine seal lip on the turbine shaft is mangled from the excessive shaft play....a new turbine seal would never fit into the groove. It's pretty safe to say these parts can go into your scrap collection.

that looks alot like my stock turbo did haha i had the same issue the owner before me beat the shit outta the turbo and engine, i know the feeling thinking everything is all good until you !look at the turbo and you see that. its heart braking if you ask me but have fun with the big 16g i heard its alot more fun than the stocker!

This is no joke. The pic's are exactly as it came off the car. I'll take some of the housings later today and post them. They actually don't look too bad, but definitely not going back on. As for the other upgrades I started with what was in my budget. New UICP and Intake pipe. I'm going for a full exhaust and mani'/O2 upgrade all at once and that'll take a little saving for. As for the injectors I'm sticking with minimal boost until I can get my datalogger software and then take a look at how the rest of the engine is behaving. at that point I'll have to budget for new fuel rail and pump then go for the injectors. Thanks for the interest in the post.

Like I said if anyone out there feels that maintenance is something to be skimped on here's the punishment, you'll have to show for it.

i had a turbo look like that. This is what happens when you drive with massive shaft play

The shaft play wasn't that bad and it went quickly from minimal to complete failure within a couple of months. This car hasn't seen any track or road abuse. The massive shaft play was the end result of the lack of maintenance and age causing the shaft bearing to fail.

i have a question about my turbo in my 98 gsx. when running the turbo will make a loud click once in a while. not consistent but just here and there sometimes more than others. im just wondering what you think it might be.

Pull your intake and check for shaft play. it shouldn't move around any more than about 1/32 to 1/16 of an inch, and should be easy to spin. Takes all of about 10 minutes, just pull the rubber intake hose and reach in it. (only do this when the car is cool though)

Just to add to the above advice, when you try and move the shaft to check for any play take a flash light and take a very close look at the blades, spin the turbo so you can look at all the blades and make sure none have any damage like mine did. if they do you're on a slippery hill towards failure.

I have attached a couple pic's of the intake housing and the exhaust housing. As you can see the housings are ruined.

Getting ready to pop the new 16g on tomorrow, can't wait to see the difference.

Come on man...you've owned the car for a year and you're blaming the previous owner ROFL haha. I'm sure they didn't change the oil enough or let it get low, but YOU should have seen this coming. I'm sure you could hear the SOUND of the turbo GRINDING like a mother fu*ker. That turbo should have been swapped out a year ago when you first bought it. Just my opinion :)
