Ok guys, well like I said in another post a couple weeks back, my nipple on my evoIII 16g turbo came off (ebay 16g - i didn't buy it, came with car), jbwelded it, that didn't even survive a 10 minute drive. So the car shakes (vacuum leak) and has unlimited boost (nipple off wg). ughh so i picked up an internally gated hx35 with 75k mi with no play or anything for a decent price.

Heres my question.. I was going to get a bolt on housing from turbotrader and use the $50 option internal wgate, and id be good to go..

However, after some convos with dsm-onstar and nick(i think his name was) over at turbotrader, both said, go external, it will be less headaches

from dsm-onstar
"I would not run an internal gate with an hx35 unless you plan on staying under 400hp permenantly. The flapper will blow open. I can't remember if the stock holset wastegate actuator has enough spring to keep the flapper closed with enough throw not to have boost creep. You can try it. The bolton housing is $50 more when the internal gate flapper is included. If you get the housing without the flapper, there willb ejust the hole there, which is perfect for an o2 housing mounted external gate. I and several others have had good success with the ebay 38mm external gate. The spring is weak, but you can use TiAL parts in the ebay gate."

"he wastegate will want to blow open at that level. Some have been able to deal with it by getting alot of preload (shimming the actuator bracket, shortening the actuator arm, etc.), or extending the wastegate flapper arm, or using an actuator with a stronger spring.

You can always try the internal gate setup for now. And if it doesn't work you can go external off the o2 housing. Leave the flapper there with no actuator attached. It will flop open anytime the external gate opens."

Since I am new, I am kinda lost at what I would NEED to go external like they both recommend.

I am so tight with cash Id want to do this the cheapest way possible.

I think I need an 02 housing, and an external wastegate, along with the bolt on housing.

So this:

The Turbo Trader

thats the housing with oil lines needed included.

But what about the external wg and the 02 housing... are those the 2 things I need to go external?

o2 Housings

theres a bunch of 02 housings, can anyone elaborate which would work?

and would this external wg work:

tial 38mm wastgate

do I want a 38mm external gate..

if anyone could elaborate.. clue me in.. do i get it? is that the stuff I need?

I did the same setup with my car. You are pretty much spot on with the parts you need.

Get a 38mm tial gate you shouldn't have any problem with that. I love mine.

As far as the O2 housing goes it depends if you want atmospheric dump or not. Some people don't like atmospheric dump because of all the noise but thats what I have and I love it. They make both recirculated and atmospheric so thats your choice. After you make that choice any 38mm external gate O2 housing should work.

Some things about that kit
1. It comes with a feed line for the oil filter housing, from what i understand is when using this source a oil restrictor should be used.
2. If I could do it again I would have preferred a push-loc return and a totally different design. I was not happy with the way the kit's stainless return worked with my car. it was kinked and i had to modify it to make it even half decent on my car. My buddy bought a return from the same company for his 2g and again (IMO) i was not impressed with the fitment and it is to this day still slightly kinked.

Just some food for thought. The kit is a good deal but i was not happy with the return one bit and I would have preferred running the oil feed off the head seeing that no restrictor is needed.

Thanks for the reply

I actually like atmospheric also,

so this would work?:

Talon/Eclipse Mild Steel Tial 38mm external wastegate atmosphere dumped o2 housing 2.5"

and

would you recommend just getting the housing from them, and buying return/feed lines - lets say on extremepsi, or another site?

The Turbo Trader

thats just the housing ^^

and thats it? the hx35, the housing, return/feed lines, 38mm wg, and a 38mm external gate O2 housing

Are all Tial 38mm wastegates the same? aka are they universal or do they make 4g63 (dsm, eclipse) specific ones?

I plan to use 1000cc injectors on 93 pump oct all the time. I have 550s right now that I will sell when the time comes, and plan to use dsmlink. everything else i got as i have a fully built 6 bolt swap.

anyone wanna elaborate with this setup, on a fully built 6 bolt swap, what kinda whp I would see on a middle of a way tune, not too conservative, but nothing extreme, 93 octane?

You will need the holset DIY kit,a 38mm wastegate(Ebay or tial),38mm flanged o2 housing(recirc or dump),4' coupler to your intake pipe size, vband 90*elbow or grind down the compressor outlet lip to fit 2.5'. I just install my hx-35 with the punishment 38mm dump o2,ebay 38mm wastegate w/15psi tial spring last week and the ebay gate works fine.

On 1 tial 38mm wg on ebay it asks you to pick the spring you want... how do I know what i want?

* Spring/Boost Pressure:....Your Pick!! *
0.25 bar (3.63 psi)-- 0.4 bar (5.80 psi)-- 0.5 bar (7.25 psi)-- 0.6 bar (8.70 psi)-- 0.7 bar (10.15 psi)-- 0.8 bar (11.60 psi)-- .9 bar (13.05 psi) -- 1.0 bar (14.5 psi)
(Just let us know what you want when you make payment)

My ebay gate came with a lg red spring which was pretty puny, so just get a real tial spring for the pressure you want to run.

What do you do .. i plan to run 25-27 psi on 93 oct.

Yeah that O2 is the one you need.

I'm not saying the kit is junk by any means but I had a lot of issues with my oil lines. Everything else seemed top notch but the lines were enough to make me not buy the entire kit again.
If i were to do everything over again with the oil lines this is what I would do

EXTREME PSI : Your #1 Source for In Stock Performance Parts - Oil Feedline Kit (Head Location): Mitsubishi Eclipse 90-99
They have holset as an option so good to go

EXTREME PSI : Your #1 Source for In Stock Performance Parts - Oil Return Line Kit (Socketless Hose Fitting) : -10AN
Here they have me a bit confused because the hx35 uses a standard t3 oil return but they have it listed the same as a GT40 and they add a cost to it so you may want to call them to see what thats about. but get that with the mitsu oil pan fitting and the two gaskets you need.

And as far as the housing they aren't listing it in the drop down menu so you will probably have to call them or something to get the housing alone. I believe this is the housing they have for the hx35.
The Turbo Trader

With all the above plus a turbo and O2 housing gasket you should have everything that the kit offers and break about even with the cost of the do it yourself kit. But you will have better and easier to work with oil lines.

You should get the spring that represents the lowest boost you would want to run. I've been told you don't want to run over double your spring pressure. You can buy other springs and double up springs for more pressure down the road.

Im running a tial 1.0 bar/14.5psi spring running 20psi because my 650 injectors are at 89% duty cycle.

OVer at the Turbo trader thy do have pushlock return lines now. Just ask for it.

ok first off a few things to consider on the O2 housing you are buying, you gotta keep in mind that the opening on the hot side of the BEP housing is 2.75 inches. As for the PM you sent me I am using an ebay wastegate mounted on the SBR race manifold so I didn't have your issue about picking an O2 housing.

another thing I noticed you said is that you broke your wastegate nipple on the 16G if you want one I have an extra adjustable wastegate off an ebay 16G in my garage that you can just have.

As for the wastegate spring my ebay external came with a 10psi spring on my holset I was able to hold 10psi with no spike with the 38mm wastegate mounted off runner number 1. Right now I'm on 26psi holding 26 all the way to redline with no wierd boost issues. Also make sure that when you are putting the turbo into your car you put some red RTV around were the housing mounts to the center section because these turbos do not have orings in that section and I put mine together without using any RTV so I might have a boost leak but I'm not sure if I do, I wish I would have known earlier cause I don't wanna pull the turbo off now if I do have a boost leak.

um if you have any questions post here I put the turbo in recently so everything is still fresh in my mind. When you shave off the lip on the compressor housing you will need a 2.5 inch 90 degree coupler that will mount to you fmic piping. Also for the oil return lines I had to use a 45degree fitting off the turbo and a straite fitting on the oil pan to make it fit.

good luck man!

P.S. Also since your a little strapped on cash I wouldnt choose those O2 housings cause they are a little pricey, try and see if you can find one of them ebay ones with the dump pipe welded to it, and just cut the dump pipe off and just cut another piece of 1.5inch piping and weld it to it with a 38mm flange and make a dump pipe it wont be too hard. You can ###### get a ebay o2 housing and ebay wastegate together and working for ###### under 200. The lines will run you ###### around 100 if you opt to buy the hot side from extremepsi and the couple is about 20bucks, You should have hopped in on the group buy for the 4inch FP intakes that they had a lil while back. it was like 65bucks shipped for the basic one, but the 4inch intake isn't absolutely mandatory.

Regarding to the oil return fitting off the turbo, I was at extremepsi with my HX35 and one of the guys there put up a standard t3 oil return fitting to AN and it was tiny compared to the drain on the hx35, So he got a gt40 adapter fitting for the drain and it was perfect.

and extreme psi doesn't have the housing listed on their site but if you call them they can get it for you. I believe it took them about a week to get it. I paid like 250 for just the housing with no wastegate from them. It's a little more expensive than turbo trader, but extremepsi knows there shit and I have always delt with them so I wasn't too upset about paying a little more for the peace of mind.

every wastegate that looks like this and says 38mm will work on any 38mm wastegate set up.

this on the other hand

is a vband style wastegate what will only work with a vband style housings.

the first option is a lot more widely used and easier to find knock offs for.

as for the injectors, i tried pushing my 550 with a 650CC/min methanol nozzle and I could not boost more than 22psi without knocking extremely and duty cycles at 98-100% with the 780s and meth I run 26psi with 82% duty cycles just a thought!

Bit of an update. Turbo is on its way here like i said.

I just got a tial 38mm wastegate with the 1 bar spring for $150 shipped used - so pretty good deal

looking for an o2 housing option for the tial 38mm wastegate.. any ideas or ne 1 selling ?

Any updates on this? What O2 housing did you end up using? Are you having any boost issues with the wastegate you chose?
