My 96 eclipse rs (nt) has been doing alot of studdering latley. and from a few stops it will cut off when tryin to accelerate. it is an auto. a few months ago i had a cel for insufficent cat flow, i cleared the code and havnt seen it since. but could this be the cause of my studdring?

When you clear codes like that without fixing the problem usually the code will not come up again until you reset it (undo battery terminals for a few minutes). If the code comes back up then yes it definitely could be your cat.

It's a possibility. A clogged catalytic converter is a restriction in your exhaust. If you can't get the exhaust out efficiently how is air going to come in efficiently?

"Cats" can melt from running rich for an extended period of time, hence you get a "clogged" catalytic convert.

Ive ran the car for the last year with out any muffler on it, just a straight pipe out the back. would this cause problems for the cat? is there such thing as too much airflow?

Highly doubtful. Forgot to mention coolant and oil in the exhaust usually is no good for a CC.

If you've been getting away with running no muffler, just straight piped...why are you so worried about even having a CC in the exhaust system at all?

Blew past me this is on your N/T...in that case NA cars want some backpressure. Think of it this way, shoot a bullet through a long rifle, or shoot a hot dog down a hallway(with the hallway resembling the barrel of the rifle) ; Both with equal force. Now tell me which one is going to have more velocity. Make sense?

This is why N/A four cylinders with 3" catbacks are just noise makers instead of power improvers...well unless your N/A 4 banger is a full race high compression engine pushing +500whp...but that's a different story.
