I just got my turbo that I purchased from a guy on another message board. Here is what he told me about the turbo before I got it.

"If if are looking for a smaller turbo then I also have To4E 60 trim/t31 stage 3 wheel with a mitsu-flange on it(could always get a T3 housing for it) Its an SBR G60 actually and only has 1000 miles on it. The turbo does boost just fine and it has little to no shaft play, all the blades and turbine wheel are in great shape...however it does make some noise when boosting (whining noise), I dont know why. So for that reason alone would sell the turbo for 100 dollars and that would more than make up for the rebiuld if thats what it needs (it may not). SBR ripped me off and wouldnt take it back. Never get SBR shit. So would like to get something out of it."

He also told me that the turbo doesn't smoke in later PMs, so I went ahead and bought the turbo anyways. I received the turbo and everything looks absolutely fine, no shaftplay, spins perfectly, no bent fins or anything of that nature.

I'm just curious as to how a turbo could make a wining noise without physically having any visible issues? I know when my 16G made a wining noise, I took it off the car and it had a bent fin on the compressor wheel, but this turbo has no such thing, do you guy think I just happen to get lucky and get a sick deal and something else was wrong with the guys car causing it to make that noise and the turbo could be absolutely fine?

thanks for any help

The only thing I can think of that would cause a whining noise on spoolup but have no physical damage to the turbo itself would be incorrect oil pressure, probably very high, because I would assume very low oil pressure would result in toasted bearings, which could also be causing the noise.

Maybe it was just his car and you got a good deal. Through it on, make sure you applie correct oil pressure from the correct spot recommended. Then you will see whats up.

I think you scored.

mine is a 6031 scm whines (sounds kinda cool) on cold morings when the oil is not up to temp yet. So I think its normal.

My buddy's SCM6031E always whined like that about 200 miles before it puked. I rebuilt it four times....he knows how to identify the failure symptoms.

If it sounds like that ALL the time, I'd say there may be an imbalance issue at a certain revolution speed. The newer G60's are built by Kinetic (Kinetic Motorsport: KINETIC DSM 60T TURBO w/ INT. WG) and are of questionable quality compared to the older Garrett and Turbonetics-built G60's.

Perhaps you should tear it down, replace the journal bearings, and send the rotating assembly out to get balanced. Here's a link to a guy that sells a complete rebuild kit with free shipping, and will balance your parts for free if you send them to him: eBay Motors: GARRETT T3 TURBO MAJOR/MASTER TURBOCHARGER REBUILD KIT (item 310105681789 end time Dec-09-08 10:10:18 PST)

You can't go wrong by putting an extra $78 into it to make it perfect. Follow this T3 rebuild guide I recently posted:

Hey jusmx141 thank you very much for your very useful post! I was just wondering if you knew where I can purchase one of these.

I believe its called a clamp? it's that 3 hole metal piece that's hanging off the side of the turbo in the picture that holds the compressor housings to the backing plate. The G60 that I got appears to be missing one of these pieces, I might just be able to use washers on each bolt, but I have searched everywhere and cannot find one of these things for sale.

And keep the great info coming guys! I really appreciate everyone's responses! But like a few people said it might be a good idea to throw it on for a few miles and see if it really is making the noise.

YOu can get that piece for securing the housing from Majestic Turbo in Waco TX.. the number is 1-800-231-5566 They are under new ownership now, but back when Kevin owned it they would sell you any part you needed and i imagine they still would.

Anywhere that sells turbo parts should be able to help you....even SBR (boo!) since they originally built the G60.

Be sure you let the supplier know the turbo has an "E" compressor cover. The hold-downs for the "B" cover will not fit.

I've actually bought a couple things from SBR before and I have never had any problems with them. I know a lot of people have had problems with SBR but I cannot bad mouth them personally, maybe I will give them a call and see whats up, thanks for the heads up man!

The whining noise is not normal. Typically this noise is caused from the compressor wheel scraping the housing. Normally the whining noise is followed by the noise of you opening your wallet for a new turbo or rebuilt.

I'm sure he has resolved the issue seeing that the thread is from 2008.

Just wanted to add- if you have a SBR G60, it's not a 60-1. Slowboy hasn't offered a turbo with a 60-1 wheel since 2003/04 when they were custom-building their "G" turbos from Garrett cores. Since then they have been built by Turbonetics, and now Kinetic....neither of which offer a 60-1 compressor in a DSM bolt-on platform.

So what what is it then?
