Ok guys I am really interested in one of these turbos and was wondering which would be the most appropriate for my setup. My mods are all in my sig if you can please take a look and help me out. The only difference would be that I am replacing the 880cc injectors with 1600cc's to run straight e85. When suggesting just keep in mind I have a 10:1 compression ratio. Thanks for all your input and help in all of this. Have a good Thanksgiving.

HX40, without a doubt.

The HX35 is more comparable to a 50-trim Garrett, while the HX40 gives a GT35 a run for it's money.

HX40 (left) versus HX35 (right)...you can see the HX40 compressor backplate makes the backplate of the HX35 look like a 16G:

Keep in mind the HX40 has different compressor wheels with 6, 7, and 8 blade variants. Wiseman DSM-onster has explained the differences to me in a recent exchange of private messages:

"The 8blade flows flows about 57lb/min around the flow of a 60-1 (PTE 6076). The 6-blade is a 60mm inducer compressor that flows at least as much as a gt35r 56trim compressor (SC61, gt35r, FP3565). The 7 blade, from what htturbo and a couple of other shops have told me, is bigger than 60mm and has the newest holset tech in it. I am under the impression that this wheel can out flow the the hx40 turbine. I'm sure it will be the laggiest. The 6-blade has the flow of a gt35r with about the spool speed of a gt30r. This one is proven on several cars. If your goal is 650whp (what the 6-blade hx40 has done) or less, then this is the turbo for you. If you want about 500whp or less, then I would stick with the hx35, of course."

Thanks for the reply. I plan on running this on a street set up and on a bolt on housing. So hx40 is the way to go no doubt huh? how much different will spool be on the hx35 and hx40 both with the bolt on housings.

Not sure about the HX35, but I understand the 6-blade HX40 should see full boost in the 3800-4000 range. I'd imagine you'd see full boost sooner thanks to your whopping 10:1 compression ratio....your car must sound like a crotch rocket as it nears redline!

I just bought a new HX40 last week, sort-of an early Christmas gift to myself for my AWD project:

Dang that sounds pretty good. It sounds like the hx40 is the way to go. Sacrifice around 500rpm in spool for more flow. Idk what would be the most boost I could run but if it was like 23psi, wouldnt that give me more horses in the hx40 than in the hx35?

Absolutely. The additional volume of air would mean more power as long as you have enough fuel....and with E85 at just 23psi, I think you'd have no trouble with detonation. The closer you get to 30psi with those pistons, though....you're on your own! :D

Good luck, and keep us posted on the results!

There's a TON of good Holset information on this site, but it's grouped into 5 giant threads in the Turbo Tech section. You can easily search the threads for specifics if you're seeking any additional information.

I have one last question where is the best place to get the bolt on mitsu housing for the hx40. I found a pretty killer deal on a used one for 80 bucks and would like to know where to find it. If there is a place to get it used that would be good to know too. PS: how much does it usually cost to get one of these rebuilt and which rebuild kit do you guys recommend?

Bullseye Power is currently the only manufacturer that builds a housing for the HX35 or HX40 to mount to our manifolds. They are available internally-gated (not a good idea) or with the flapper removed for an external gate to be used off the o2 housing.

You're right, $80 is a STEAL as long as it's in good shape!

I've bought Holset kits on eBay in the past....there are a few vendors that sell Genuine Holset parts kits for around $75. I have the ability to perform the rebuilds as well if you're interested....PM me for pricing.

Theturbotrader.com is the only place to get the bolt-on holset housings new right. BEP is completely out. Theturbotrader has them instock.
