i am curently building my 1990 gsx and Now is time to buy the turbo so i need some help in choosing. based on my engine setup what turbo and manifold should i go for and why? i want an external wastgated turbo, and where can i buy it so that i can make one big order. the car will not be daily driven, please feel free to ask questions.

Not to rag on you, but these questions get asked at least once a month, and fail to give enough background. I feel like a broken record saying this, but what are your goals? When do you want it to spool by? Price range? Seriously man you have to at least give us some basic info when you want us to help you.

500hp is what i am looking for a spool time at around 4500 rmp, price range i have a budget off 3500 turbo with manifold and external wastegate, and good pump gas tunning turbo.

You could even be a baller and go FP ex. mani, HTA35r, Tial 44mm Vband and FP O2 housing and still be under budget by about $100.

Self tuning costs no money, and I'm sure $100 will buy you enough gas to do it with, even today. but yes, with the dyno time I'd say you might want to cut the mani off that list.

EDIT: I just actually priced that out due to curiosity, it leaves about $600 left before shipping.

how about the DSM FP3052 Ball Bearing Turbocharger with FP Custom 2.5" SS O2 Housing, FP DSM Race Manifold TiAL 44mm Wastegate? is it possible to hit 500HP with my engine set up? what is missing? the down pipe can i route it right out the front bumper with no muffler or is it going to be too little of exhaust back pressure? thanks for the help.

It's possible, but usually not without race gas and a great tune. Also, it will spool well before 4.5k, so if you really want full spool before 4.5k and 500hp, I would say something in the GT35r range is a better fit. A GT30r like the 3052 (which we run), will get you 450hp and full spool before 4k, maybe even around 3.5k depending on the setup. Also, with good boost control like a Tial 44 will give you there is no such thing as "too little exhaust backpressure" :)

I used to have a 3052. To be honest, its nice for the street and all, but for the same price, I would go with the 3065. I ran a t3 3082r (3065 in a t3 .82 housing) and it spooled awesome. It made WAY more power, put me in the 10's on 110 octane, and I made 505whp on 93 octane every day of the week. I moved on to bigger and better things, because for me, spool isnt an issue anymore. I consider my t67 p-trim very streetable with full boost around the 6200-6500 range. It didnt bother me any and I made more power on pump at way less boost.

3500 - 500whp
i would of cos go for
HX40 BEP $920
2.5" o2 housing + tial 38/40mm
wht I like is that, if the turbo fails, rebuilding it is dirt cheap compared to the garrett bb's
u dont need a 44mm tial or special downpipe for this setup compared to the fp's
and u got lots of cash more for injectors and etc to hit 600whp :p

Congrats. You've never blown one ;) . They do blow and getting a rebuild blows. I've never blown a holset. But if either of us blow a turbo, who's out more money. . . Sounds dirty.

The hx40 is good for your goal. Spools about 500rpms faster than a gt-thirty-why-r and flows FAR more in the end when you just can't get enough AWD wheel spin.

thilaksharma is right. The cost difference overall is rediculous. We're getting boinked by these companies selling $1800 turbos that spool slow, arn't rebuildable, and lwhere lots of addons add up. Much less they don't overdeliver and underpromise. Borg-Warner is another brand showing to overachieve but be underpaid.

. . . There was a time when DSMs were the king of underrated overachievers. Seams that time is fleeting.

One more vote for Holsets&Borg-Warners here but if you 're dead set on a garrett unit I would suggest looking hard into the HTA line. There is not much sense IMO to go with a regular 35r as of today after comparing the results between the two.

Borg Warner S258-362 with the GVAutosport divided T3 manifold and twin Tial 38mm gates. It'll spool close to a bolt-on of similar size because of the twin scroll, cost less than you're planning to spend, and easily make the power you're shooting for.

I'm actually considering trying out the borg warner s366 myself. The price is good and people are doing pretty well on it. I'll probably do it with a top mount t4 manifold. The garetts are pretty expensive however. Check out Himni Racing, Turbocharger, Turbo, Garrett, Turbo Kit, GReddy, Mazda RX-7, HKS, Apexi, TiAL, TurboXS, TurboSmart, Flange, Turbonetics, Exhaust, Intercooler, ACT, Intake. They seem to sell garett turbos for pretty cheap if anyone is interested.

Did some testing on the S366 on a 2.5l stroked Evo IX, dyno graph below (I know its labeled 40r, but its really the S366)

Im not sure if that dyno graph will really help me out any. Its a completely different car. Im thinking the s366 may be too small for me. Dont they consider the s366 to be a gt35r equivalent? I dont really know anything about these borg warner turbos, are they even bb?

PTE SC/SCM6152 is comparible to the GT35r, you can get it journal or ball bearing for under the price of all the turbo's listed above.

You also asked somewhere to buy everything or almost everything. ExtremePSI has a great selection with the best prices on turbos that I've seen.

The S360 is the closest in size and flow to a 35r. The S366 is more like a 4094R or T67. They are not BB, but they spool very well for a given size. They use an extended tip compressor wheel, which basically acts as a larger wheel while retaining the spool of a smaller wheel.

I have a t67 right now. I like it, a bit laggy, but insane top end and it loves high boost and 9500rpm. I could of sworn I read somewhere that the s366 was a 35r equivalent, I could be wrong tho. The cool thing about the borgwarner turbo, is that I can get it in a t3 setup. I currently have a t3 SLS manifold, but I would really like to go top mount t4. The gt40 is t4 only it seems.
