I'll be doing my setup similar to that just with a hx40 with t4 divided manifold and hot side. I will be sticking with the side exhaust too. How low does the JH manifold put the turbo?
Not really low at all, there is plenty of room. It puts the turbo away from the mount which is good so you can get your lower ic pipe on good w/ no issues.

No pictures or video. But I can link you to the results from speedweek. Car number is 4663. It is a spin off of 4G63. When he did the vinyl on the car, the G turned out really ugly. So he put a 6 on and has not got around to it since. There is some information on here regarding his project. Pictures are there.

Keep in mind he never got out of fourth gear. 1G FWD DSM.

SW Results Down runs Aug 11, 07

On this day he had all kinds of problems. A oil leak, shifter cable breaking and breaking again, then finally the last two or three passes the head gasket letting go with the final pass it letting go completely.

Same as his other custom made turbo. Full boost(wastegate pressure(24psi)) was seen around the 6300rpm range on a 2.0L.

Steven

Does anyone know what the stock holset internal wastegate is set to (psi)? I'm currently using a stock mitsu internal gate, but I cant get anything over 20psi. Thanks

Nothing less than 30 psi :). For the hx35 and hx40 wastegate actuator. Jeremiah (Maglin) tried it already and posted about it in the previous holset thread.

Pretty good stuff Steven considering the issues. I didn't forget :) . I look forward to seeing your colt maybe taking a record? I think it's there for you, once your done. The 1.6 will be laggier and yet easier to stay together at higher speeds, right? Arn't you building your colt for top speed records? Who cares about lag when you have miles. It will be an interesting beast.

b00stedtalon2- Thats one sick setup, let us know what kind of lag that thing has. Do you have dsmlink?

biglady112- Thats also crazy, but it would be awesome if you could snap some pics.

Most of the Holset actuators are not meant to be ran at much less than 30psi as Monster said. However, the actuators that came on the hx35 from a 95 Dodge are 17psi actuators. I have one sitting here that I'm not going to use since I'm going external. If you're interested in it give me a PM.

Decided to log the boost response while driving on the interstate tonight. Starting in 5th gear at ~3000 rpm. This is with the 14b actuator with no boost controller.

Just under .95 seconds to go from 70kpa cruise to 9psi of boost.

Aero, do you have any ideas on how you will actuate the VGT? You probably could get decent numbers with it like this. But that is a FAST spool for the wheel sizes involved.

You could always rig a way to manually open and lock it at different postions. Street turbo for the street, and race turbo for the track. Just a flick of the wrist LOL .

I found Hx35 for anyone looking for one w/BEP housing.

Ive decided to skip out on trying to find one on Ebay and just buy a new one from Modern Automotive Performance or The Turbo Trader for my Holset Hx40. Anyone have experience in buying from any of these guys?

I highly recommend MAPerformance. Talk with Dan or Chris and you'll be golden. I got mine from there.

Matt, I am going to continue actuating it using the 14b actuator connected to the VGT rack for the moment. It fully opens the rack by the time it hits 7-8 psi the way its set currently. I actually like the way it opens since its so early it gives me the initial 7-9 lbs of spool then opens rapidly and continues spooling at a bit slower rate. A boost controller on it would move the quick spool curve to a higher boost level before slowing down.
I would really like to tap into the manifold and measure the exhaust backpressure and see how low it drops when it opens VS closed cruising.

The only problem is even opened all the way the boost keeps climbing after 4000 rpm or so. I ordered a new 14.7lb spring for my external gate so I can finally connect a boost source to that and keep the boost down. The 3.6 lb spring just wasn't even going to work.

This thing feels like it pulls so much harder than even the HX40 I had before. It feels fairly comparible in pull of the HX40 at 17lbs, with this setup at 11ish and only revving to 4500rpm. Granted its been forever since I drove that setup. I'm sure the difference is 95% in backpressure from the VGT and the lack of an exhaust.
The HX40 I hd was slowed is spool and power by an unported evo3 o2 housing which left a lot bigger step than I thought there was when I put it together, and by a downpipe that wasn't quite 2.5" in a couple places.

I don't think I ever want to go back to a normal turbo after experiencing this thing, as long as it holds up ok.

Nick at theturbotrader.com helped me a ton when I bought my turbine housing from him. He has very good customer service.

Good work. I think your setup now gives us another viable holset option tht has better spool than an hx35 in a bolton housing but more flow than it as well. Please share some more logs and numbers if you get to push it harder. Especially flow numbers.

How much of a benefit ar the billet wheels? I know in the last part we brought it up but I don't remember anyone having any real solid info on the billet wheels.

Lighter weight, but stronger. Another name for forged aluminum. A compressor wheel can flex but more than likely crack when revved high enough. This makes a holset even more prepared to overrev and still survive, stretching range of operation even farther. Since the compressors are so efficient, you may actually get into the lower range of efficiency of another turbo without going too far past the structural integrity of common namebrand compressor materials.

YouTube - Bullseye Power making a Billet compressor wheels.

This is in addition to the monster bearing housing internals, superback technology, MWE, independantly balanced wheels, etc. The holset will be even more indestructable with a billet compressor wheel.

hmm anyone have a billet holset ?

We already said, or at least I did, that the HX-52 is a machined billet wheel.

I don't know about taking any records. I have the Haver Motorsports Galant and Mike Reichen's new project to contend with. My friend is in the F engine class and those guys are in the G motor class with me. I am building the car for top speed, but not for records. 200mph whether at the Texas Mile or on the salt.

As far as I know the 1.6L has the one of the best, if not the best rod ratios for a stock 4 cylinder mitsubishi engine. They can rev to the moon extremely safe if you can work the oil pump and bearings to handle it.

Are you saying all hx52's or yours? Cause I have found them and they don't all look billet. What would be a better turbo to pick up a hx50 w/ billet wheel or a hx52 with a regular wheel?

That's pretty bad ass :thumb: I have a line on hx 50 and a hx52 thinking i might pick one up and try and run with the big dogs. I know the hx40 will do 700whp but the car is not gonna be a street car really so lag isn't a factor especially since I"m not afraid to spray and a stroker is the gameplan.

I just need something that will pull a deep fifth gear. I have a AWD fifth gear right now in a FWD tranny. Plans are to eventually move to a Evo III/Galant gear or a TRE 25% gear if I can come up with one. We purchased the last one from TRE last year for another project that some loser ended up getting.

So a turbo of this caliber will do much more for me than the little sleeper 16g that is on there.
