So I just got my car back from the dealership last week. They did the transfer case recall for me. I barely got 10 miles on it and it locked up on the highway. It was stuck for about 2 seconds it seemed like. Then broke free and I was able to pull it off the road.

There were also some interesting things that happened right before "the incident". Right as I was getting on the highway my cel went on. It’s a code p0170 (fuel trim malfunction bank 1) and a p0125 (closed loop fuel ctrl insufficient coolant temp) It was at least 6 months since my last cel. Evap something, but I fixed that a long time ago. Since this, found I have a bad o2 sensor because it’s chilling at 0.0 volts. So that explains the first code... And maybe the second according to some other posts.

The next cool thing that’s going on is a nice smell of oil (I'm pretty sure its gear oil) It mostly happens when I come to a stop, but not always. There was actually smoke coming from under the car when I was driving back to the dealer. I don’t know what to think.

Here are my main questions. I drove it back to the dealer and they put 60+ miles on it with no incident. Told me it was fine and sent me home. I still get that smell just no smoke... Should I trust them? And drive my car?

They next told me that those codes were from a lack of backpressure because of my aftermarket muffler (no real exhaust yet:() I think this is funny, since I've had it since the day after I bought the car with no cel. I’m going to replace my o2 sensor and see, but what do you think?

Thanks!

sounds like the dealer F***ed you over :( poor DSM. and i have a aftermarket muffler on mine and you can't get a lack of backpressure they are giving you BS. i said if they won't fix your problem then SUE there A**es

but yeah try to change both your O2's sensors since your 2G has two of them. but that doesn't mean thats the problem.

I hate that tomorrows Labor Day! It seems like every time you want to go to a parts store they're always closed! SO, ill be waiting till Tuesday to get em. But yea, ill try that.

Okay, so I've hit fuel cut once before in my life a long time ago. I was increasing the boost small amounts at a time when 18psi came up!! Ha ha can't wait till I get those supporting mods. BUT anyway, is it possible for whatever reason I hit fuel cut? Looking back, it almost felt the same. It was a long time ago though, so I'm not sure. I wasn't in boost, just cruising at 55.

Maybe? I'm just coming up with ideas though.

i also found a little drippy drippy coming from the transfer case area! With a new transfer case, am i correct in assuming that the only place it could leak is the transmission output shaft? The fluid smells like gear oil and is black not red like my transmission fluid. What do you think?

Okay. Some updates. I did find a parts store open today!! I got a new o2 sensor and cleared my cel's. They havnt come back yet.

I put some more 75w 90 in the transfer case and it still is leaking. I get about 5 drops per hour now. Which is less than before. WTF?

Any ideas?

This would concern me....

New factory fill oil should be kind of clear with a golden tint to it..

Drain your transfer case and see if the oil is full of glitter or metal chunks.

EDIT- Save the old oil so you can take it back to the dealer!

The dealer probably just stuck a new rear seal in the t-case and thats it. Print the vfaq and take it to them or just pull the driveshaft and rtv it yourself.

I do know for sure that I got a new t-case. It's the shiniest thing under my car! :sneaky: My old one was so bad, the rear axle had lateral play.

I have to check the fluid level again to see if it lost any more. But it is still dripping a bit. I don't have the smell anymore though... whatever that means.

I might drain it like said above and see what the fluid looks like too. But I want to hold off on that with gear oil being $9 a bottle!

What is the best way to check where the leak is coming from? I sprayed the whole area with some brake clean, but it's still very hard to see.

get under the car and look, clean areas around seals, if its not leaking from a seal, suspect a crack in the transfer case, gear oil looks like clean motor oil just a whole lot thicker and you can smell it, its a very distinct smell especially when its been burnt!
