All oil sender threads are merged here.

going down the road today i noticed my oil pressure gauge was reading nothing or zero depending on how you look at it..on my stock gauge..

i immediatly pulled over to check my oil and found that it and the rest of my car was fine..its still running fine and everything so i came home to check vfaq.com and it said that my sensor could be the culprit..

so my question is there a website or link to a page that will show my hw to check my sensor??? and or replace what is needed to read my oil pressure... or shuold i just say #### it and get a aftermarket gauge right now because its more accurate anyways?..

yeah im new around here so go easy on me..but i didnt think this was a dumb question or anything so thats why i put it here..

ok i get no oil pressure readings, (already made sure the sensor is attached to the sender unit). im guessing the sender took a dump on me. I want to know if i can hook up an autometer oil press gauge and put the sender in the samplace as the stock one on a 1990 filter housing. i feel like a noob but can anyone throw me some info?

Yes, but you'll need to get an adapter.

Well I made a stupid mistake by not un-plugging the black plastic clip from the sensor before I removed it, and the when trying to back the sensor out, the wire twisted right off.

What I want to know first off, this is the oil dummy light correct? And can I just leave the sensor still in the filter housing but leave the plastic clip unplugged? Will it trip the light? Thanks

There is not enough room to solder the wires back together so I'm just wondering what I should do.

Edit: I have got an aftermarket oil pressure gauge so I don't really see the "warning light" all that necessary if I can spot the problem from my oil pressure gauge before the problem gets that bad.

I believe that is the oil pressure light sensor. I dont think it will trip the light. If it bothers you too much that it is unplugged you could always just get one of the insulated female connectors with the clear plastic over it. That would allow you to hook it back up.

Will it effect the performance of anything if I just plug up the hole with the sensor itself and not connect the clip to it? Anybody else know what sensor this is and whether or not I can leave it un-plugged?

it is your oil pressure dummy light. if you leave it unplugged it will not trip the light nor will it harm anything, unless you loose oil pressure... since the wire isnt hooked up to that sensor it won't be getting any type of reading therfore not turning your op light on. like the poster above you said you can just go out and buy a female spade connector and crimp/solder that on to your existing wire and slip that on. which is exactly what i did when my orginal clip on one broke off my wire for the oil pressure sensor.

Pull that black piece off. It is just a fancy spade connector. Go pick up a cheap pack of female spade connectors strip and crimp and its hooked back up.

This connection is what gives your factory oil pressure gauge its reading when its not plugged in it will not read. I shouldn't trip any lights. As stated above its an easy fix with a spade connector. You could always go to a local junkyard and clip one with enough wire to make a new connection.

Okay i know this is gonna be off the wall but i really need help. I was trying to run a oil pressure gauge and i have messed up my oil pressure sender that tells the stock gauge how much oil pressure i have. It currently reads that i have oil pressure all the way to the top of the gauge.

Heres where the emergency comes in. I don't know how many people on here have kids or know what WIC stands for but my daughter needs to go to her appointment or else she will lose that. If you don't know what wic is it's something like they give you a coupon 3-4 times a month to get general food that your kid(s) need to grow up right.

Well anyhow if you've read this far my question is can i run my car with it saying i have max oil pressure? i have this feeling that it's going to tell my ecu not to pump so much or maybe i'm wrong. Hence that's why i'm asking. I need a quick reply so any little bit of info will help me out. Thanks

The oil pressure sender just controls the gauge, it doesn't talk to the ECU. You'll be fine driving without the sender working properly.

I'm just hoing he hasn't mistakenly messed with the adjacent Oil Pressure Relief Valve somehow thinking it was the Oil Pressure Sending Unit - & BTW a Stock Gauge is FINE & I hope like hell you aren't even THINKING about a Mechanical Oil Pressure Gauge~!

actually it is a mechanical gauge. I got a couple gauges for Christmas and going to get some SS lines to make this a non leak type deal. shouldn't be to hard. These gauges are non returnable so i'm going to stick with it unless it really is a waste of my time.

I never messed with some valve. i took the drivers side tire off then the plastic fender to get the oil sending unit where i was going to tee into that hardline to get my oil pressure gauge going. Only thing was i got really stupid and was trying to tap and die just about every thread when i didn't have to. thats when i ended up screwing the sender up by putting it in a vice. go me! The part should be getting here i was just in a fix but i'm safe now.

Hey whats up Kmoore... Im putting my Turbo back in this time hooking the oil line like you have it off the oil house insteand of the head.. but I font know what size is that 90 elbow you have do you know?? and can I just get that at home depoet?? thannks bro

I wana put a oil pressure sensor inn the line that goes to the turbo to the head i have a stainless steel braided line now.... it a 1/8 sensor fit in a hole that 1/8... please send pictures ,links, to the fitttings, that can make it work. Thanx i have a 1g :talon: with a garett turbo

With my Laser Turbo, I have an unusal sender arrangement: just one port where the sender is threaded into and no port for the idiot light sender. The pressure sender is mounted in the front next to the filter instead of the usual position-which is being in the back part of the filter attachment unit. Don't know if this is correct or not, but my oil pressure reads quite on the low side, yet I know that oil is getting everywhere needed.

Any ideas on this one?

So I'm looking at all these, not really getting much clarity and I just baught some aftermarket gauges, I see that the oil pressure sender is by the oil filter and all but this fancy set of instructions is telling me that i need to buy an Oil Filter Sandwich Adapter to extending my oil filter an inch?
If I'm replaceing the stock sender why would I need an adapter?

Another question, anybody got a tutorial up on how to install these aftermarket gauges or know a place that could do it for me? My last electrical job wasn't to great...

i tried reading this thread through but couldnt find an answer:

My oil gauge seems to be reading zero when im at idle...When i am driving, its fine - as soon as i accelerate, the needle moves back up. but when im at a light stopped and look back...the needle is back to the bottom.

Any takers....

Just popping in to say that a sentence only requires one period.

Thank you and now back to your thread.

Thanks grammer police, don't know what i would do without you! NOW can someone please answer my above post :thumb: i would greatly appreciate it

While it's been a while since I read this whole thread the simple answer is what your describing is quite normal for many DSMs.

The standard value for pressure at idle is 11.4 psi or more. As long as the warning light doesn't come on at idle you should be making at least that.

Mine doesn't drop all the way to the bottom but pretty close. Still did after I replaced the oil pump at 120k. The old pump clearances were in spec but it was replaced to be safe.

Hmmm. Well i was talking to another DSM'r over msn and he said i could be leaking oil, i need an oil change soon as it is but i notice my oil level dropped (on my dip stick). im not sure if im burning oil or leaking. i don't think im burning because i haven't seen any blue smoke or anything.

So you're saying that its normal and i shouldnt stress over it as long as my oil light doesnt come on?

Do you know what the problem could be though?
