I got the following email from Jacks Transmissions:
Hello,

We have inspected your transmission and I'm afraid I have some bad news.

This is an early 1G transmission and all of the parts are very small and weak. Most of the special upgrades that are included with our Premium transmission rebuild will not fit in this unit; even if they would the transmission would still be very likely to break under high horsepower. The Quaife LSD, however, would still fit in the transmission.

There are two options.

1. We can do an OEM rebuild plus the Quaife on this transmission. We would refund $200 of your payment. We could still have it shipped by the 24th. We don't recommend this option, since you would still end up with the tiny, weak gears, and we can't warranty a rebuild done on this transmission.

2. We can find a later 1G transmission for you with the stronger components. We would need an additional $300 to pay for the core. It will bolt right in and be a much stronger, better unit with all of our Premium upgrades including the Quaife LSD. The main problem is I have no idea how long it will take for us to find a proper core (if you can send us one, that would be ideal.)

How do you guys feel about what he is saying? What are your recommendations? The trans is a 1990 fwd. The motor is a 1990 turbo :confused:jdm cyclone. The ecu is jdm. The body is at 1994 gs.

Personally, I would ask Jack what he thinks you should do. I can vouch for his honesty and work... I had a problem with my tranny slipping out of 2nd gear, and Jack fixed it - free of charge- and said it was a part defect, and sent the part back to the manufacturer.

I bought a second trans from 1ducky2 and event though he swore up and down it is a 94 the numbers come back to another early 90. So I've spent $450 so far and have nothing.

Shep had some cores there, so I'm having him build me a stage 2 with qualife and new intermediate shaft.

So $3,550 later I'll have a trans I never have to worry about again. S%*t that's the same price I paid for the car!

It's a good thing I hate money and love my dsm.

Wow man, thanks, I wasn't feeling crappy enough about the whole situation.:toobad:

$3500 for a tranny. I love my DSM and all, but I cant justify that. I hope you have a high goal set for your car, and not just street driving it. Thats kinda crazy.

Same here, when my car is running in the 10's then ill spend the $$ on a Shep tranny.

Shep charged me $3100 including qualife, new intermediate shaft, a core and shipping. The other $450 was $150 for shipping my trans in, buying a $300 transmission from a crook (who's email is 1ducky2@something.com. I junked all his emails because I was pissed. Oh yea and another $150 to jacks transmissions for their time tearing two junk transmissions apart.

I know it's alot, but shep is the only one who has cores in stock. I would have gladly let jacks build me a trans but they don't have a core and I can't risk paying $300 for yet another early 90 trans.

I spent alot of money, but I'm excited about having a great trans that I'll never have to worry about. But I can enjoy the hell out of.

Makes sense then. Just isnt very exciting with all the unexpected costs you had to pay. For trannies you already had. Good luck with everything though. Hopefully it all works out in the end.

I just got an email from Fed Ex, Shep shep shipped my trans today! I'm trying not to be pissed off at that 1ducky2 jerk. Easier said than done. I'm sure I'll forget it all with my first LSD launch!

I'd have dropped this project months ago if it weren't for this forum!

My 90 trans does not gind or make any noises, old lady drove it in the city and put 100k on it in the first 11 years, but the car sat for 7 years...

All of the 91+ trans i have gotten are shitty, all of the 90's i get are mint. Maybe its just my luck.

I was going to say, that price for the Shep trans sounds pretty good. I broke my 2g tranny with barely more power than stock, and replaced it with a TRE tranny. I paid a bit less than you, but that's because Jon @ TRE cut me a bit of a deal after continuous delays for about 3 months (I've been very happy with the TRE trans for years now though).

Anyway, I just wanted to ask, that 1ducky2 guy wouldn't give you a refund? That's pretty crappy. I can understand if the tranny was pulled out of a '94 and it happened to be a '90... but in that case, he should at least refund you what you paid for it and take the tranny back. It was his mistake, not yours, so you shouldn't have to pay for it (besides, he could've checked the VIN for himself if he wasn't sure).

Yea, I offered to pay the shipping to send the trans back to him for a refund, I showed him the numbers off his trans and pics of it next to a real 94 trans. You can see the difference without even taking it apart.

That 1ducky2 guy isn't a good person. But it's just as much my fault for not checking the numbers first. I generally trust fellow dsmers. But never again.

My other issue with it is that Jack from jacks transmissions showed me the number differences and what to look for. He showed me that you can tell a 90 from others without even taking them apart. But yet he charged me $150 for the time he spent taking the two transmissions apart. If he could tell they were 90's and knew that isn't what I wanted, why the hell did he start taking them apaprt? Oh well, what's another $150 at this point.

What are the numbers? I have a 1990 with 200k. The car has been BEAT on ever since it's creating. As far as I know, the tranny is stock. What numbers tell you what year tranny you have? . . .

It has to be an early 1990 trans 1/1990 - 5/1990. I'm not the expert though, email shep with your questions.

IIRC, the 2G transmissions are stronger than any 1G tranny and can be dropped in with slight modification.

The gears are, but not the sleeves. I wouldn't be dropping in a stock 2g tranny into any car. I broke mine with barely more than stock power.
