OVERHEATING? The issues and their solutions have remained the same- either you don't have enough cool air reaching the rad, there's a cooling system obstruction which is preventing coolant from circulating, or your head gasket has failed and is allowing coolant to be consumed or pushed away from the engine.

Discuss all possible overheating problems and solutions here.

OK,
I just left my house to go over to my GF's,and happen to look down and see my needle right before the red mark. This just happened out of nowhere. I stop the car as quickly as i can, and pour in some coolant(Coolant a little low). Still same thing. Welp im in the middle of the road, and HAD to get it home. Im only 5 min from my house. I decided to try and make it(I really had no other choice). Welp I drive no faster than 20mph, and the temp needle is BARELY into the red the whole way.And occasionaly to the left of it. Am I ok?? Do ya think any damage was done?? And im thinking either thermostat, or water pump. For each of those, whats a round about $$ figure to get replaced?? Any info you have would be GREATLY appreciated!

Yeah, I will be doing the ducting right away. I've had the fmic on for a few weeks now and I've never had the overheating problem until the day before yesterday. You know what, I'm going to rig up some rad ducting tomorrow. Also will get the cooling system pressurized! Thanks again, keep some suggestions coming.

Another thing I've noticed is that there used to be a weird sound coming from behind the dash. I would usually happen when I would just start up the car. It sounded like a water sloshing around sound. Then when I would raise the rpm's the noise would get louder and sound like a wierd bubbling noise. Like pressurized water trying to enter a narrow opening. That is the only way I can really describe it.

I don't know about your climate, but it went from 50-60* to 80* in 2 weeks here. I watched my cruising temps go from 172* to about 183-186* depending on how fast I am going, rpm & acceleration.

The gurgling, bubbling and puddle under the car could be the cause of the overheating or the symptom. The pressure test will tell you if you have a leak and you should be able to find it relatively easily. The test should reproduce this sound you are hearing and hopefully you can track it down. Good luck!

I tried to pressure test the system but the tester wouldn't fit to my system. I need to look around at different auto stores and try to find an adapter or something. I am not leaking any fluid anymore. I think it only leaked that one time due to the overheating causing the fluid to shoot out somewhere. I hope the test will solve my problem.

Ok i had a cracked Thermostat housing and i thought that would be the major reason my car was overheating and then wanting to die so i got that replaced and everything was good for a few minutes then im driving around my block and the temp jumps way up. steam is coming out the hood and the car starts losing power and dies on me. I open the hood and there is rusty water blown everywhere, and steam blowing out a small hole in the radiator so im assuming thats why it overheated on me. The car has been sitting a while and im just getting it back on the road and having all kinds of problems now. The exhaust manifold has a leak and causing the car to idle weird a couple of the studs are loose on it and doesnt seem to want to tighten down. After the car overheated i also started hearing a ticking noise coming from the front driver side of the engine!!!!! Any help would be greatly appreciated ### i really want to get this thing back on the road.

Ticking noise is probally due to having little to no antifreeze in the system. If your sure its the radiator then replace it. Or you could go to autozone rent a coolant pressure tester and find out where your leak is coming from. Fix the overheating problem first then worry about the other problems. For all you know the problem your having could be causeing multiple problems.

The last time I had brown water was due to a seized up water pump. I am on my 3rd water pump since I bought the car (OEM WP- seized-up left w/ brown water, WP 2 - leaky oil cooler hoses--> coolant leak that seized up WP and now WP3 (hope it holds up).

k thanks ill check that out.... whats the easiest way to tell if the water pump is messed up. I've heard they are rather difficult to mess with on these cars. Im still pretty new with these so its all a learning experience past the basics.

Ahhh, this really sucks. I just had my radiator completely serviced and now it takes longer to overheat but eventually still does. I have like 4 questions.
1. Would a clogged up heater core cause a car to overheat?
2. OR would it cause a car's heater to not build up heat.
3. Does water constantly flow through the heater core or only when you turn the heater on?
4. I have done a block test 2 times and each time reveals that no headgasket leak is present at time of test. Let's say the headgasket only leaks at high cylinder pressures. Would that cause a block test to give you a false negative. Would the hydrocarbons entering the coolant system remain in the coolant long enough to test with the block tester if there was only a leaking headgasket under boost???
Please wiseman, help me out here. It has been two weeks and I'm growing very exhausted with the problem:cry: Thank to all who've helped so far. I've been using your comments throughout my process of elimination.

I thought we address this issue when you borrowed my radiator?
BTW. you owe me a flange...he he he

You live in O.C. and went for a canyon run and couldn't send me an invite:notgood: LoL Where do you go? There's a good one near my house back in Trabuco Canyon.

Ahhh, santiago canyon road by cooks corner. I love that road. I usually go up to glendora mountain road. Pm me you phone number and I'll give you a ring next time I go up there. Mike.

Yeah, I guess we didn't push it hard enough. It starts to overheat again. Let me try out your fans on my new clean radiator. I will try anything now. It passes the damn block test but I still think it is the head gasket only at high cylinder pressures. Someone please tell me if I am wrong:cry: If it is the darn headgasket I'll be pulling the 6 bolt out of my pos 1g and 2.3 it.:D

And out of curiosity I just stuck the block tester near all of my exhaust fumes from the tailpipe and the fluid didn't change color either??? I don't have a cat by the way.????? Now I'm not even sure if the block tester works :(

OK, here's how to do a combustion gas check. Put the solution in the bottle with the rubber bulb on it. The solution is blue. Put the rubber stopper in your radiator with the engine running, being careful not to get burned. Make sure the coolant is a little low so you don't draw up anti freeze with the rubber bulb. Pump the bulb vigorously while observing the fluid in the bottle. If it stays blue, it's ok. If it turns yellow, then you have combustion gas in your radiator.

Don't do it in the exhaust system. It for sure will turn yellow there as there's obviously hydrocarbons present.

Good Luck

Have you done the ducting around the FMIC yet? Installing FMIC's have been known to cause overheating issues. You also said that changing your radiator helped out where it didn't overheat longer? Why not try a performance unit like a Koyo radiator? I just got a great deal on mine, $319 shipped, maybe they can help you out with a good radiator at maperformance? Before I left my car was having overheating issues.. My fans weren't cutting on when the car was running for some reason, every now and then they would engage and my car would be fine, but then other times they wouldn't turn on and it would overheat. Ran a toggle switch to the fans and I can turn them on at will and car seems to be fine, I ordered the koyo for the bling factor :D! Let us know when you try the ducting and if the other radiator works or not. Hopefully one of the two will work for ya, and I'm praying it's nothing majorly serious! good luck bro

Thanks to all of you guys. I will try running the car without the front bumper on. I was driving like that for a few days and it never seemed to over heat like that so I might as well try it out to rule out any other problems. I will also try to bypass the heater core hoses. Can I just loop them together or do I also need to block off the heater core also????

Hey guys, I'm new to this site but I'm in a bit of a problem here and need some help. Ok, so I originally bought this 1992 talon, the car was originally not turbo and the previous owner got a turbo off a tsi at a junkyard and slapped it on t he engine and ended up blowing the motor. 2 of the pistons were basically molten. Long story short, I had the engine rebuilt. I had the block checked, bored .020 over and honed. I have the stock turbo on the engine, greddy bov, stage 2 brian crower cams, stage 3 clutch kit, koyo racing radiator, all new gaskets and seals. everything has been done properly. the dilemma is that after all this, the car started to overheat after running awhile. took the thermostat out, figured that would solve the problem... but nope the car still overheats after driving it about 20-30 minutes, and the coolant begins to dump into the overflow resevoir and drain out of the car. not sure what the problem could be. i bought some high velocity radiator fans but have not yet installed them, i wouldn't think that would be the problem anyway.. any help is appreciated

i didn't replace the water pump but it looked almost new and there was a waterpump box in the back of the car when i got it.. hmm.

Replace radiator cap with another one, that holds more pressure. While you there, change thermostat. Make some ducting around FMIC/ if you have one /. Check all the water lines one more time/ heater core, TB,rad. hoses, etc./.Try and flush the whole cooling system. Clogged heater core, might cause the car to overheat too. If the situation, does not improve, I might think HG, even though is brand new. I had the same simptoms, when I blew mine few years ago. I hope it isn't the HG and good luck.
