Can anyone confirm if these fittings are on the factory part or do they need to be drilled and tapped. Thanks.

IMO, best thing to do if you want to run a external cooler with the forward facing housings, it to use an oil filter relocation bracket with built in provisions for a cooler. The relocation bracket attaches where the oil filter would go, but it also has provisions for an external cooler as well as the relocating the filter.

Heres a high dollar greddy unit, but obviously they can be had for much cheaper, just search around.

I am also looking into this because I'm tired of removing my downpipe and having to change my oil every time I need to work under the car. I know a forward facing filter with a sandwich adapter is not ideal, but would it be reliable for a daily driver? Is anyone running one?

I have also heard a couple people say they just run the forward facing housing with no cooler because our water cooler is worthless. I don't have a ton of money to spend, so a sandwich adapter and small cooler seems like the best bet. Any thoughts?

Just delete your Water to Oil Cooler, cut the Oil Filter Bolt off to a shorter Length & Loctite it back into your existing OFH, your Oil Filter will then seat directly on the OFH, that will give you Downpipe clearance - Then plumb up an Air to Oil Cooler off the unused ports at the front of your existing OFH - You don't need the sandwhich adapter.

From what I understand only the 90 oil filter housings have the option to use an air cooler because they stay closed until 180*. I have never seen a water cooled housing next to an air cooled housing. I'm guessing the air cooled housing would allow for more downpipe clearance with the filter. I'm now considering switching to an air cooled setup and using a shorter filter to prevent clearance issues.

Are these "unused ports" on all 6 bolt OFH or specific years? Thanks.

I am in SC & run Full Synthetic so I use no Oil Cooler Temperature Control Valve as the 91 OFH has none - In colder climates you may want to use an aftermarket Oil Cooler Temperature Control Valve that would preclude needing to use a 90 OFH that has that Valve built in - For instance the guy in Post #2 in Missouri probably runs an Aftermarket Oil Cooler Temperature Control Valve as that OFH has no Oil Temp Valve in it either.

No, for instance the best I can tell the "forward facing" OFH is just an NT OFH & it has fewer Ports as you Posted in your Pic in Post #1 - SO... with a Forward Facing the Sandwhich Adapter may well be the way to go - ANYTHING except the POS Water to Oil Cooler~!

The Titles don't say it but these are some GREAT OFH Threads IMO - BTW I'm not so sure that the Port by the Oil Gauge Sending Unit was the ideal one to use in my setup when I review these Threads.

I came across this pic of an oil filter housing and it had these tapped ports on the side. I've heard these can be used for external cooling. Is this true? If so, can anyone tell me what year these came from and better yet, what the part number may be? I'd really appreciate it. Here's an attached pic disregard the circle to the right. The ports are arrowed. Thanks again.

That is the air-cooled OFH off of a 1990 DSM. The ports you are referring to are the feed and return lines to the oil cooler. You can pick one up off in the classifieds on this site with a want ad, visit a junk yard, or buy one new. MachV.com has new ones for sale.

Does anyone have an OEM part number for this 1990 oil filter housing?

Just an FYI the early evolution OFH's have provisions for an oil cooler also. I have an evo3 setup in my ride and all the ports are there. Not sure on a part number or where to get one but for those interested might be worth looking into.

MD132912 is the 90' housing.

Ouch!! 300 smakeroonies!

When it's put into perspective it's not all that much. I guess if its needed, it's needed eh.

Im pretty sure picking up a 90 or evoIII OFH and making the kit would only save you 50-100 bucks depending on the sourcing of the parts. So yeah, good link. :thumb:

Be careful just taking those allen plugs out and running lines to them. One is filtered, the other is not.

If you are refering to Bane3d he does not have a regular DSM Oil filter housing, his is a special one that Karking uses in there 6 bolt swap motor kit.

There is now a option with the AMS oil cooler kit to get it without the housing if you already have one or have the evo 3 one.

To bad I just sold my last 90 housing. I swear I had 2-3 of them just laying around. I'll let you guys know if I snag another one, I usually sell them used for 30-35 bucks.

Has anyone used an genaric AT tranny cooler for a oil cooler?, I have seen thease on a cupple cars. Will it work ok?

They are not desinged it handle the flow or the pressure of the engines oil system. Transgo and a lot of other firms make engine oil coolers for tow packages.

anyone know the PN for the gasket associated with this housing? Or the model of car it comes from?
