to make a long story short,

i was friends with some people who owned a hi performance shop, i went there alot and even helped with some work, i bought a 92 talon and it spun a bearing so it went in for work.

work was supposed to cost just over 6,000 all said and done. after 6 grand and 2 years i still dont have my car, ive been talking to a lawyer and trying to make arangments but to no avail and im trying to find prices for items that i think are way way overpriced

these are some of the things i need to find, if anyone can find them im looking for both MSRP prices and what they should cost from a respectable shop

the prices with the following are CLAIMED prices from this shop.

2.3 stroker rotating assembly - $1600
msd dis II - $600
act stage II xxtreme clutch kit - $800
n1 gt achaust system - $1200
hyoshi timing belt - $370
timing belt tensioner - $180
rebuild gasket kit - $270
balance shaft eliminator kit - $100

as for the labor goes like this

removing the engine and tear down - $800
block machining - $1000
assembly - $1000
head work (for 1 mm oversized valves) - $800

grand total of about $9,000

when i had 6,000 into it, i was always told it will be done in 2 weeks, repeatadly. now that i got in contact with the lawyer the cost magicaly jumper 3 grand,

any help is greatly appreciated

Did you sign any paperwork for the repairs (estimate, repair order, etc)? If not then that's easily your best weapon.

Contact JNZ Tuning and other vendors listed here who sell engines and ask them for an estimate for the parts that you bought.

As for the lawyer make sure you have all your paper work, etc. Having proof is key to winning a case.

all i realy have is a recipt saying i paid 5900, and that i still owe 300

i have not signed ANY paperwork for any of the work

That reciept is all you need then, no way in hell you should be paying 9k. Why the #### are they taking two years to get a job like that done? I recently had a new motor swapped in starting monday and they will be done today or tomorrow. Its not as big as job but still. You should have dealt with this 23 months ago.

Have you actually tried searching on the prices of the aftermarket stuff?
The 2.3l stroker kits on the DSM parts site is pretty even.
I'm pretty sure the MSD Dis II is not worth $600. $350 on the DSM parts site.
Search some of the vendors. Majority of the stuff you could buy for a whole lot less cheaper.
In two years time you could have assembled everything yourself and the tools required would have cost you less than 1.8k. The machining for the block and head could be sent to a machine shop and they would have it done in 3 weeks time and for a whole lot less.

Hey there. most of the stuff you named is close. However, seems like they where marked up. Some more than others. The timing belt is way over. You can get a complete timing belt install kit for 100 bucks. Thats the cam tensioner idler and everything. BTW whats the name of the shop?:notgood:

i just got my block done this week and my machine work was only 150 so 1000 thats outrageous. as for the head work got mine done also this week also and it was 250 for 1mm oversize. i think i also paid like 80 for my tensioner, and 130 for my greddy timing belt, the balance shaft eliminator from my machine guy was 45, and my rebuild gasket kit was 100 hope this helps if you need any more prices i have all my receipts and stuff if you need anything! just pm me!

holy shit,
2 years to get a car back. i think id be pretty pissed by now.
i once had my car in a shop for like 2 months, but i got a good deal on some work and was in the process of moving so i didnt want it back. but after i moved i hassled them every day untill i got my car back.

I think they've been driving your car on the weekends. no way does it take two years unless you were slow to pay(which it sounds like).

FWIW-Never bring lawyers in until you have your car back. I'm pretty sure it won't last more than a week once you get it back now.

dude for 6 grand I would have built my 6 bolt within 2 months and sold you my 2g gst and my 91 240sx, and two years does sound like you took your time to pay which I put the blame on you, my friends gsx took 3 years to complete for a 2.3 stroker and tranny and rear end full build he only got to drive it 2-3 months before he got killed. good luck some of those prices seem double and some triple.

Is the shop name #### performance by chance???? ROFL anyways I would ask them to print up a full detailed price list for you, and then goto 2-3 more shops and have them make up identical lists, and stating their prices. $350 for a timing belt WTF I can get cam gears and a greddy belt for that. Also, that exhaust had best be full titanium and the clutch.... is that a twin disk or what? Dude I would go get my car as is, pay the other $300 and take it somewhere else

don't know if it'll help but today i bought my timing belt tensioner from the dealer aka stealer for $104 for my 95 talon tsi. hope its of help if needed i might be able to get image of receipt. if needed pm me.

The block machining is too high.

The assembly is a little too high.

The head work is too much, unless that includes the price the price of the valves and/or the head needed extra work. Head work costs can vary.

The MSD costs too much and it is of no use. They don't do crap and 99% of DSMs and often fail.

The timing belt tensioner is way too high, if it's really only the tensioner.

The bal shaft eliminator kit is too much even for OEM stuff.

The clutch is way too much.

I am not talking about cut rate internet pricing either, they are high for full on retail.

just to clairify a few things,

i did pay over a small period of time, last payment was back in febuary of 06 i think

also as for driving the car on weekends, no no, i went and took pictures of the car just last weekend because its sitting outside without a motor rusting away

the exhaust (not titanium), msd, and clutch were discused be never to be put in, these are parts he had already in his shop, however he is trying to claim he had to order them for me.

the shop is ####, in savage minnesota, formaly known as ####.

also the head work does not include valves or any hardware, all the valve train was the be purchased seperatly

also for the exhaust he has a sticker price in the shop, on the exhaust of 750,

i also forgot to mention, i had a deal with the shop, to purchase items at COST

i have this in writing actualy, as a result of help from my lawyer

the deal with the shop was supposed to go like this

i was supposed to get parts at cost, machining at cost, and discounted labor costs.

like i said before, i have this in writing, in a letter from the shop, to my lawyer

Does the prices include labor? Anyways, it seems very high, and 2 years is an absurd time. Also if your car develops rust because its been sitting outside for a fifth of a decade... I would think that is their fault... assuming you paid on time of course.

Since you are in MN... check out MAP They are a supporting vendor on this site and on the west side of the twin cities. Get an estimate from them... or better yet demand a refund on the parts (labor and machining work you will have to eat) and take it to MAP.

Also do some price checking with JNZ and Import Evolution. Eric from JNZ and Ryan from IE are great people to talk too. Ryan has come through for me numerous times.

no the prices are completely seperate for labor and parts.

i do understand i will have to pay for machining and some labor, but the way ive figured it, i should get at minimum of 1600 back if not more

what the shop is trying to do is claim these prices to justify not doing the work, the deal they offer is that i take my car back as is, and the will refund some parts and call it even

this would basicaly leave me with a 2.3 short block that cost 5 grand and a 1000 dollar bare head

i will definatly be checking out and making some phone calls to the places mentioned above, thanks for the help, more comments are still aprreciated greatly

Holy S*** 2 years! You could of learned how to do it yourself, break it in, race it, blow it up and rebuild it again even better for 2 yrs..

yea thats so true, but ignorance, and being naive, and thinking these people were once my friends has landed me in this situation.

in an odd way it also landed me in a 94 mustang cobra . . .

*UPDATE*

just got off the phone with napa auto parts, they were supposed to be doing the machine work, an as i said before i have it in writing, that machine work was to be at cost. IE not marked up

head work is roughly 500 bucks, this included +1 mm valves, 5 angle job, and full assembly

block work is also roughly 500 bucks

so after doing some digging around, and doing math, if i should take the car back as is, i should also get 2300 back

i should not have a problem proving this in court from what i see in writing, but i am no expert

Good for you in putting a little effort on searching this out. Though you are pretty late in doing so. You may have a claim in small claims court if they fight you. Get records and double check everything.

Ouch, for any future work you might want to pay the extra money to get it to a trusted dsm shop. That goes for everyone. Thank god slowboys is only an hour and thirty away.

id say stealing $6k is reasonable grounds to dish out a beating. id say wait for them to finish work and get your $6k's worth. but thats just me.
