Water Pipe Ideas

Alright after pondering all day on my dilemma, being that I have a Holset that wont fit a water pipe I came up with a idea.

Hot Rod guys use SS radiator hose, what if I did something where i was able to cut the water pipe and weld something that would allow a -10 ss line run behind the turbo, would it work? Too much heat, ideas are needed!

I have seen pictures of someones setup that is exactly like you are describing. I wish I could find it for you, but I don't remember where it was.
 
alright so i was told SS line behind the turbo wont work.

So i have a couple spare water pipes I am gonna cut up and braze together and see if I can't make something happen that way
 
after staring for more then an hour at my dilemma I concluded that making a bend and brazing it together is not a good idea, the chances of me not lining it up right are just too great.

My original problem was it leaking, and right now I am seriously thinking that JB Welding the seals to the water pump and thermostat housing might be my best option.
 
Seriously though... why would the ss an line not work? It may be alot of extra hassel, and you will need to tig some fitting here and there but why not?

i dont know what heat that inside rubber can hold, if I can find some that I am comfortable with I will, and ill even do some heat shielding too...but I still don't know

Slowboy screwed me on my manifold as it is, and I don't have the cash to drop for another manifold.

Edit: After some quick research the SS line can hold up to 300 degree F, however I am sure with the radiant heat off the block and turbo it will go much higher, that doesnt mean some kind of heat shielding wouldn't work if I knew what to use
 
Well if you cant move the water pipe, the manifold needs replaced. IMO, that is a much simpler solution, even if you lose some cash.
 
The cast FP manifold is the only one I know of that kicks the turbo out slightly to help with not denting the water pipe, no not the one pictured up there either WTF
 
My friend has a holset, he runs a spacer between the manifold and head.

I think its about a 1/2" thick flange basically, and he runs longer studs. It gives him plenty on room behind the turbo.

i wish their was a way to talk to him, like i said I can't find any line thats rated for over 300 degrees, and I dont know how i could heat wrap it. Im also curious on how he got the fittings into the thermostat and pump housings
The water inside won't get over 300*, im sure you'll be fine.


You could also jsut fab up a wedge shaped spacer between the turbo and manifold that would angle it away from the pipe.
 
What manifold do you have? What flange does it have? Does it have an angle on the turbo flange? Do you have any pics or a links to pics? I might have aome ideas let me know.
 
If your manifold has an angle to it. you can use a turbine flange for a spacer in between the turbine housing and the manifold. I just did this for a friend and it worked great. That way you only have to seal one hole and not all 4 runners, also the longer bolts are a lot cheaper than new longer studs as well as the flange is much cheaper for a turbine housing compared to the head to manifold flange. But it depends which manifold you have.
 
well with my build i have been heavily researching this topic and you could do something else like a new water source from your head jays racing sells a - fitting that goes in the head and you could run a ss line from there and a liminate alot of stuff check out there web page heres a the link Cooling : Jay Racing
