So I found a replacement door handle from some no name company on ebay for $10. I thought sweet! and snatched it up. Spent $80 getting it painted and put it in. After about the 5th time opening the door it snapped WTF. I don't want to go to the junkyard and get a 10+ year old door handle. So...does anybody know of a distributor that sells QUALITY replacement door handles?

Gosh, a ten-dollar replacement for an eighty-dollar part not holding up. Shocker.
You'd have been in better shape with a real one off a junker (see also Avengers and other Chrysler products).
The repair kit with JB Weld will yield a stronger handle than anything otherwise made.

Use the handle only to unlatch. Pull the door by the metal.

That's what I figured since everybody else sold them for that price.

Before I designed my 2G door handle repair kits, I closely studied the door handle design. There are two flaws in the OEM part that account for the high number of failures.

First, there is a stress riser in each hinge exactly at the point where the moveable handle transfers the load to the fixed base. Oh snap!

The other flaw is that when a load is applied, one hinge meets the stop point before the other does so the two hinges don't share the load correctly. Double snap!

What is ironic is that the $10 China knock-offs copied the OEM handles so well that the exact same flaws are in their crappy parts too. Those handles don't quite sit flush to the door under the handle area either so they have a bonus flaw.

BTW, new OEM handles from a dealer are made exactly the same way as the old ones so it's just a matter of time before they break again.

You should check these guys out. I plan to buy replacement handles on both sides from them when I paint my car. installation

I was just wondering exactly what part I am going to need for a 1g 91 laser. someone tried to break into my car and broke the handle. it's the plastic part that if you are looking at the driver side door handle it's underneath and on the left and swoops upward into the car. I've seen a way to fix it but it wasn't a 1g and it didn't explain exactly which part to buy. do i buy the whole door handle then switch in the spot where my key goes? i'm lost and just tired of having to open my door from the passenger side then go back around and get in. haha not very slick looking.

yeah you will need to get the whole handle and just swarp the key switch, did the theif take anythig?

Hahaha no the idiot couldn't even get in. once he broke it the door couldn't open from that side even if he had the key. It's gonna suck for me though

Just replace the whole handle. I brother broke my passenger door handle on my old 2g by accident. The door was locked and he tried to open the door by yanking on it and it came right off. I just bought a new one on ebay and went from there. There not hard to install either. Just take off the interior door panel and its pretty much self explanatory from there. Goodluck

It was a PITA on my 2G talon when I replaced the door handle. Never done one on a 1G though.

I'll see how it goes I guess. my car is kind of a champagne color though so will it be hard to find one that matches or am i going to have to go ghetto on this

Ive done a couple door handles on eclipse's before I replaced mine so to me it was not bad replacing it. When i ordered mine on ebay, it was brand new and came black, so I had it painted to match my car.

Yup just buy a new handle assembly and swap the cylinder locks over.

Alright thanks for the help guys. so much for me finding champagne paint or at least trying to paint it because i'm a DSM'r now which means I wanna save money for parts not paint

Does anyone know if there are any good tutorials out there that will help me in doing this on a 1g DSM? I just received my door handles in the mail today and am eager to fix it. I am speaking of the exterior handle on the outside of the door itself.

My driver side door is having trouble opening, the door handle is not broken and it just started doing this, a last week or so. When you pull on it the door just wont open. It takes several tries to get it to work. I don't want to break the door handle again, so any advice on this problem.

Take the door panel off, and adjust (bend/straighten) the linkages as needed.
