Not to ruin the party but mine lasted about 17 or 18 minutes on c16 with the wastegate flapper welded shut, hella fast though for a $259.99 dollar turbo! (shaft broke, max psi was 41 or 42, wish I had a video).

Well lets see here.....You boost a turbo that maxes around 28ish and push it to 41-42?? thats your problem...
And one of the reasons why it lasted that long...
Not to ruin your post, but come on man, 41psi??? on a ebay big 16g?? What the hell do you think is going to happen?

First off I'm glad that you are having good luck with this turbo. I however did't have the same kind of luck. The only reason i ended up buying this turbo was due to the fact that my 14b went out after only owning it for about 3000 miles. I needed a turbo quick and only had a little bit of money. Typical dsmer. So i went ahead and bought it and it worked great for about 3000 miles. About 2 weeks ago it started whining almost like a supercharger. Didn't worry about it too much then, but yesterday the turbo decided it had enough. I lost about 1/2 of a quart of oil from work to my house which is only like 1 and a half miles. So i took it off today in swap of another 14b thanks to a friend and come to find out it had about a 1/4 of an inch of in and out play on the shaft. It also chewed the compressor blades up pretty bad while it was rubbing the compressor housing. I'm not saying everyone is going to have this kinda luck but it is something to worry about. I just dont have good luck with turbo's that's a turbo every oil change. I also primed the turbo prier to starting to make sure it was being installed correctly.

Hey man no offense taken. We (my buddy and I go halves on a 91 tsi awd) and we just like to mess around with things. I have another one on the car now and it's been fine for all but 12K miles... that other one (wastegate flapper welded shut) we didn't pay $260 for anyway it was on the spare motor that we bought, thats the only reason we beat it to death.... :)

Awh man your selling your 93? That sucks..
Are you putting it back to stock?

Yeah I know, but hey it’s in great shape and runs perfect. As for putting it back to stock.....Nope...LOL.....this comes how it is......All my stock parts I had for the car went up on E-bay....LOL.....and are now gone....I am also including my $500 17'' ADR Rims with the vehicle (Never saw Snow/Ice/Salt), along with my stock Newly Painted To A Grey Silver Metallic Rims.

My first evo 3 turbo from ebay lasted 10 months boostin 15psi daily soon as put I fp2 cams it blew 2 weeks later than i put a 14b stock in it blew on 17psi after a 1 week. So I ordered another 16g from EBAY lasted 2 weeks and now smokes like a bi*** doesnt have major shaft play but almost no more ebay turbos for me. I think they hold good up to 15psi daily but after that it a wrap.:beatentodeath:

I think its the fp2 cams = 3 blown turbos....LOL.....J/K

Thats sucks man, sorry that you had bad luck....I have not once boosted this turbo below 15 yet....I am constant at like 17 to 19 daily....And still have great luck with this turbo....KNOCK ON WOOD....:)

UPDATE UPDATE!!!!!!!!!!
Just got back from Lunch
OMG Just blow the doors off a EVOVIII with a 60Trim!!!!!! OMG
Pulled into a parking lot to see if he really had a 60Trim on there and sure enough he did...
He didn't beleive i was only pushing a E-Bay Big 16g...LOL...
Said he was running at 25ish..... Now i'm at 23-24ish Peak!!!!
:tease: Now he either can't drive a lick, or he's not at 25psi....

:rocks: Man little guy packs a punch :rocks:

Ok i decided to buy the the same turbo you did. I hope it does well . Im going to document it as much as possible mileage and so on and reliability . I have a small 16g turbo on the car now and the inlet wheel is scraping the sides . It is junk now and it burns oil under boost . So i hope this ebay turbo works .:thumb:

Turbos is on and pulling hard no smoke way better idle and i had a little miss and its gone to . So far so good . I thought it would blow on start up . But its still alive . I to got work on my boost controller im getting a bit to much boost. I ported the flapper hole.

My buddy is installing this turbo tonight also. Hope his works out ok. First it will be running 18-20psi on the pump gas tune and within a few months he will be running e85 and 26-28psi. We hope it lays down good power and holds up like a MHI.

Update turbo is still doing good around 400 miles on it 19 psi. Ive ran it hard a few times and im happy with the power . Take note the wasgate canistor did not work ? I had to use my mhi canister.

PS I would break the turbo in first before throwing 26-28 at it.

I'v been running 22 psi on my ebay 16g I bought from punishment racing on ebay.

It's been on about 1,000 miles. and I beat on it all the time.

no smoke, a little laggy compared to 14b, pulls pretty good.

Well, a friend of mine purchased a car with a new eBay 16g on it. 6bolt 96 GSX, 8.3:1 ross pistons, stock cams(?), stock head, and 1g intake mani.

The first thing I found was that the WGA arm was adjusted far too tight, using up half it's travel. The flapper was also very hard to move. After opening and closing it by hand multiple times it would move freely. That got the boost at least a little under control.

While the WGA was now properly adjusted, it would boost creep more than I've ever seen, easily going into the 20's shortly after 4k rpm. This was with a line directly between the pressure source and WGA. Under 4k, it would stick around 10-12 psi, and reaching it around 3k. This was with a full 3" turboback with no cat. It would still creep to ~20 psi even with the WGA arm disconnected, allowing the flapper to open it full travel.

The turbine housing came off for porting to stop creep. Comparing the two housings side by side, the eBay one was cast without much flash/slag, and pretty damn smooth walls-the only problem was the penny sized wastegate hole. Seriously, a penny would just barely fit. After all the porting I could do, getting the WG hole just smaller than the flapper(could fit a quarter in it now with some room to spare), radiusing the entry, and smoothing out the steps behind the WG hole, it was tested again. While it would take much longer to start creeping, around 6k if I remember right, it still wouldn't allow 15 psi to redline, which is all his fuel system would allow at the time.

I modified the WGA to get it to open the flapper a full 90* and finally got the creep to go away.

We started getting the rest of the supporting mods(fuel pump, injectors, WBo2 etc etc tuned by dsmlink) and began turning the boost back up. At about 17-18 psi and a stock intercooler it was indicating roughly 30 lb/min of airflow. This was with below freezing WI weather. Full boost still hit just a tic after 3k in the higher gears, and around 4-4.5k in first gear.

After the eBay SSAC intercooler :p, airflow shot up to 34 lb/min without any changes in boost. With some more tuning and boost it settled around 36 lb/min at 20-21 psi. 17 psi to 20 psi was a big change, and hits pretty well now. Full boost around 3.2k or so in higher gears. A few attempts to increase boost further led to it dropping to around 20 psi by redline after its initial 23 psi. This may be caused by the WG blowing open, it will be adjusted tighter sometime to see if it helps. Peak g/rev is right at 5k and is about 2.95 IIRC. Peak airflow at ~6k.

All in all, after fixing the boost control issues, I'm very impressed with this turbo for the price. It spools up pretty quick, hits hard, and its definitely very streetable. No shaftplay yet, and no blowing smoke. I don't know the exact miles, but I'm pretty sure it's a little under 1,000. That's with constant boosting :p

Mr Peepers, was it the EVO III GT? It clearly says EVO GT on the compressor housing? My cousin has a talon with that setup. It's a 2g with 6 bolt swap. Full boost doesn't seem to kick as soon as I'd like. My MHI b16g hit fast and hard. Perhaps its the wga. Do I just loosen the nut and then what do I do? Perhaps it may fix that problem.

However, in a thread specifically about the EVO III GT (sold by turbochargers.com a while back), the OP said he was hitting full boost late as well.

It wasn't the GT. "Turbocharger" is stamped on a raised plaque along with evo3, TD05H etc IIRC. Otherwise, the compressor cover doesn't have any other markings on it.

It looks just like this one: Video of ebay 16g knock off - Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
(on the left)

To adjust it you would loosen the jamb nut, take the arm off from the flapper lever, and turn the end of the rod. You want it so its just holding the flapper shut with a little bit of preload(you shouldn't be able to jiggle the lever when its put back onto the lever, but not to the point where you have to pull it out really far to put it back onto the lever). Too tight and it will creep from some of the "throw" being used up to hold it shut, and too loose will cause the flapper to be partially open all the time, causing slow spool up.
