Will you fail for your monitors on an obd2 car with dsmlink, when you have the o2 sensor moniter turned off? I just need to know if it will pass the functional check for CEL. Not if it will pass tailpipe or visual.

No it will not, I just went and I failed because of visual check. They said come back with a cat and they will pass it. I even had my back o2 sensor cut but still in my exhaust and they didnt say anything about it. HAHAHAHAHHA

One way to pass for CEL is to use an output for a dual runner/plane manifold ( like a cyclone) hook a positive feed to the light and the ground of it to the ECU's output ( which normal pull to ground) set the function to operate below 500 RPM and then to switch runners (in this case the light ) off at anything above that. Been through this one myself with a freidns car in VA. Luckily we don't have any tests here in NE. Just a VIN check if the car is from out of state.

I was wondering the same thing because I went to a smog place and they said that my monitors were not ready, Anyone know if there is a way through DSMlink to make the monitors read READY?

by "Monitors" are they talking about reading from the OBDII port or just dash indicators?

In california they dont just look at the light, they hook a scanner up to your OBDII port and check for any codes and to make sure the EGR, o2, cat & EVAP systems are all in Ready mode (as stated above you can pass if at least 2 are ready), removing the bulb or other methods to just disable the actual light will not work here. Dsmlink is the only way to make the ecu ignore someCELs and set the monitiors to ready so it reads properly in an obdII test.

Unless its a 95, in which case we are exempt. If we have a CEL, we can just clear them, and have DSMLink set to not look for that particular type of error. Or for those without DSMLink, just remove the light behind the CEL icon. ROFL

That doesn't work. My friends T-Bird didn't pass because he did that. The Smog dude saw that the light didn't turn on when the key was turned. Depends on how smart the people are that do it I guess.

I'm wondering the same as the OP since I am in Cali and am about to switch to Link.

I am in CA too, I could not have passed without Dsmlink, clear your CELs set obd monitors to ready and you will be fine, as long as you pass visual & the actual emissions part :D

Sweet! Already did a few months ago with nothing changed. Just a few things painted black. Just looking for a long term thing so I don't constantly have to switch stuff out. Thanks synthetek!

Ya know, I LOVE california ( lived there for a while ) but all the damn tree huggers and conervatives out there would drive me mad. Esoecially teh Sierra Club, I'd love to come blazing through the trails on my CR500 and mow about a dozen of them fawkers down while spitting roost and 2 cycle burn off all over em :D

that's my idea of a good day :p

Plus, i'd HAVE to buy a new car to get around out there since my car is 100% stand alone and there are no smog provisions left on her. I wouldn't mind running a cat if i had to, but all that other crap, is just that in my opinion "crap" !

Or i guess i could ride my motorcycle rear round in SoCal.

DSMLink, at least not via the pc software, can't force those checks into a ready state. You just need to drive the car for a while to get them. Took only a little bit of driving to get some of the checks to test, leaving egr and cat I think in not ready. Fortunately in VA we're allowed I think up to two not ready tests. Over time the other two entered a ready state but it took a while (gave up looking after a few days but they were ready weeks later when I happened to look).

Research for your state how many you can have in a not ready state, and then drive your car until you satisfy that.

You need the palm version of dsmlink to do it as it says above.

Some cars have the MIL problem and the monitirs never become ready and they have to go to the dealer and pay to have them set to ready for inspections, with Dsmlink you can just do it yourself instead of having to pay the dealer $100s each time.

How do you go about setting them to READY with DSMlink? I have the PC version Only and dont see the option to set them to READY. One of my friends is having the same problem with his 96, they told him to go to the Mitsu to set his monitors so he called them and they told him they charge $180 to do that. I've been driving my car around for almost a month and the Monitors still are not ready, If I dont find a solution soon I'm going to have to pay to make it pass.

As far as I know, the PC software won't allow you to set the tests to ready & they will not program it to do so. There was a post on the DSMLink forums about this subject a year or so back. Yes they could easily change the software to allow you to do this but because of legal reasons (covering their own asses if someone gets caught) they will not make the changes. I would imagine if you had the smarts you could change the code yourself to allow this. Only thing DSMLink will do is tell you before you go in to take the test, which rediness tests are completed. If you recently disconnected your battery, it will take sometime driving before the rediness tests are completed. Seems strange/didn't know the Palm version had this feature, was it programmed by someone else, as it doesn't make sense while they won't do it in the PC software version but do it for the Palm?

The Pocket PC Version did not work with my Compaq iPaq, so I tried downloading the Palm version to my Palm pilot and that didnt work either.

After trying everything I thought was possible and not being able to pass smog I almost decided to pay to make it pass smog, but that wasn't neccessary.

This is what I did to get my car to pass smog with DSMlink V2:
I opened up DSMlink then connected to ECU by selecting ECU>Online, after it connected I went to ECU>DTC's. In that window under "DTC Checks Currently Enabled" there is Items with check boxes next to them that you click on if you want the ECU to check these Items, for smog you would only need to check EVAP/EGR/MDP and Cat Efficiency/O2, but since my EGR is blocked off, my Evaperative system was removed and I dont have a MAP sensor, I only checked off Cat Efficiency/O2. After warming up the car and driving it on the freeway for about 10-15 minutes I went back and checked the OBD Rediness and my Cat and O2 sensor monitors read READY so I headed right away to the smog place and it passed.

On mine none of the boxes where checked off by default, which is why the Monitors never were ready, this picture was taken from DSMlink.com.

It’s possible to get a waiver for the readiness flags not set.

This applies to the 32 states listed in the article.

So I'll be getting DSMLink V3 and I'm in SoCal. From what it sounds like DSMLink will give me the features of forcing the ECU to set the monitors? Previous to this, I had to smog my car once. Did the drive patterns to set monitors, failed. Took it to a station and it passed the drive test but failed the inspection because the monitors never set. Took it to a Mitsu Dealer and they enabled the monitors, ran the drive patterns and I took it to the same station and it passed. Trick is, only the Mitsu scan tool works on stock cars to enable monitors, after that the monitors can be tested by anyone that can read and drive. You also cannot shut the car off after setting them or it will reset all that have passed. This is for people that don't quite understand stock Mitsu's.
Another ? I have is, for disconnecting the DSMLink port and getting it out of DSMLink mode, does that clear settings or clear them for OBD2 compliance? It doesn't change parameters, rt?

Thanks. That was really informative. Wish I would have seen this post the last time I smogged my car, would have saved me $150. Oh well, live and learn.
