All threads with vague titles regarding engine bay noises are now merged HERE.

If you honestly feel we can diagnose an internal engine problem from a poor description or low-quality video / audio sample, give it a shot.

I own a 1997 gst spyder and there is a ticking noise comming fron the engine. It comes and goes and it mostly sounds bad at idle. I have 97,000 miles on it and i change the oil regularly. I changed it about 2000 miles ago I need help to fix the problem.

I've got a can in the garage. I'm thinking of doing it pretty soon. Just going to wait till it's closer to oil change time. Did you just suck some up through your BOV vacuum line?

I used 2 different lines to make sure some got to each cylinder. The one for teh BOV and teh one for the FPR. i ran a half can through mine and put the rest in the gas tank. I didn't even put it in the oil this time because teh motor got quiet and smooth as soon as i drove it and cleared teh seafoam out of the motor/exhaust.

Last time i put it in the oil, it did clean and quiet the lifters up really nicely too. I am just running stock 2G lifters as well.

HAHA sounds just lik my 2g....ok, u can hear ## injectors and u very likely seem to have either an exhaust leak or a vac leak. find the leak first that alone will quiet ## car a whole lot.

I searched for noises while turning, but most of the results were about a clicking noise. The noise I hear is a vague grinding noise coming from the front of the car; weather I am turning right or left, moving or stationary, it doesnt matter. This issue started just today. The noise is not speed dependent; i turned the steering wheel wile stopped and i heard the sound. When i turn the wheel, i can hear the sound quite clearly, and then its stops about a second after I have stopped turning the wheel. then when I turn the wheel back to the strait position, i hear this slight grinding until about a second after I stopped turning the wheel. While it might be a grinding, it could also be described as a mechanical sort of sound. Its very hard to describe. Anyways, what do you think it is. Im kind of hoping Im just low on steering fluid, because that would be a cheap fix:sneaky: Ill check that when i go outside.

PS fluid looks fine. The sound went away, for the most part, on my drive home from work. Maybe it has something to do with the temperature, I dont know. I listened to it just a few minutes ago, and its more of a squeaking than a grinding.

How cold was it? When my car sits out overnight in teh mid to high 20's, the power steering sounds like it's going to die if i don't let the car sit and warm up to at least 170 where the fast idle is programmed to turn off ( that's how i know she's warm..RPM drops from 1100 to 800 )

The sound was louder earlier in the day. Also, it made the sound even after the car had fully warmed up.

Wheel bearing? I just fixed mine and the bad one sounded like grinding

I just went by Autozone and picked up some Lucas PS stuff, and added a little to the PS fluid. Hopefully that should solve the problem. I wanted to see if the sound was still there, even when the engine was off. Sure enough, I heard it loud and clear when the engine was off. With the engine off, it was definantly a squeaking sound. If I had to make a guess, I would say its coming from the steering shaft somewhere. I also noticed this sound when I went over a few bumps. Will the Lucas fix that, and if not, how do I keep that squeaking to a minimum?

My girlfriends car just started making this noise recently. Its a 98 GS-T auto. At first I thought it was the flywheel flex plate bolt grinding. I pulled the starter and saw that it was rubbing the lip. So I shaved down the lip in that area but is still makes the noise. I getting ready to drain the oil and see if anything is in the pan. Any suggestions?

That is your lifters. When i first experinced that noise it was after i ran my car really hard and i heard that and freaked . You could try sea foam . Or buy you a new set. You can leave the cams in but you need to roll the cams to wear the lobe is pointing up. Then pull out the lifters. If you do replace your lifters do not do not !! pump them up first with oil . Let the car do that on its own.

Noise number one is either lifter tick or an exhaust leak. I think it is lifter tick. Noise number two is the normal tick of the injectors opening and closing. They can be louder on worn injectors but yours sound pretty normal to me. If you have an exhaust leak you need to remove the heat sheilds and listen around the exhaust ports on the head where the manifold bolts up as well as where th turbo bolts to the mainfold. I would also check the downpipe connection for good measure. I have also seen cracked exhast housings on turbos occasionally that leak exhaust out. If you suspect a leak you can confirm it by looking for black soot around where the leak is. Also make sure you have no broken bolts or studs. Good luck.
