Today was the day.

My family is moving to florida, awesome right? One problem, I'm stuck in RI for college.
With no place to store the dsm near my apartment, it has to go to florida.
It has a nice cozy spot in my grandfathers airplane hanger, down the road from the new house.

When the nice weather comes back around, I plan to bring back the dsm. She's an even better daily driver since the rebuild. So I have no reason not to bring it back for the spring, summer, and fall next year.

On that note: She leaves me with just over 2,000 miles on the motor and tranny. She has run absolutly perfect, only break down was a toasted altinator. I drove the car over 400 miles that day including 4 runs down the track, I guess the heat really takes a toll on it.
Vacuum sits at 20 psi at idle...thats with 264/272 !!!??

So here I wait, It hurt to watch her go.

Damn i feel your pain man. LOL Florida is nice though transfer to a school in Florida. Your DSM will love it there and it looks nice and clean. Good luck with the withdrawal symptoms. :thumb: ROFL

Alex, my man, I am taking a trip to flordia soon, Ill take it for a spin if needed :)

Will give you some time to save up for the DSM money pit. I guess you and VelocitàPaola enjoy travelling back-n-forth between MA and FL. Now you can help me and Dustin with our issues, ass. :tease:

Looks good with the talon spoiler. At first I thought it was a talon with an eclipse conversion, but then saw the white top (oh and it listed under your name) Too bad you had to watch it go.

Question, why do you need to store it? Why not drive it? You said its a great DD... so why are you letting your car go to another state, when you could keep her, and drive her around while your stuck where your at?

Because the winter season can rape a car. My DSM has always been stored in the winter, and I like knowing that it has zero rust. Not even the fasteners on the car's underbody have corrosion on them. It makes it easier to maintain and work on, as well as keeping it looking better and for longer. There's no sense driving any nice car in the winter, IMO.

Drift_SM - Ever consider renting a storage garage for a few months? I had to do it a couple years ago. $80/month for a few months isn't that bad, and it sure beats exposing it to the elements or being 6 states away. Just a thought.

I think the problem for many of us who drive our DSMs as DDs is lowering oneself to the level of shitboxes. I know I wouldn't want to spend anywhere between 500 and 3000 dollars for a car that I hated. I bet I could find better places for that cash to go. ;)

I guess there is some level of sacrifice that must be made too. What's that saying? "The best modification for DSMers is another car."

I'm the same way about rust and corosion... but when its the only vehicle you have... you gotta make due... I mean... I just bought my 97 Eclipse... I'm probably the 40th owner its had LOL... how do I know how they treated it? Actually I know the shit my DSM Has been through... I've never had a perfect one... but I made them perfect in my eyes. I did prepare my 97 for the winter time, I lifted it back up and made sure the tires were good for driving in the snow, since its my only vehicle... Then I came into alot of cash... so instead I shoved her in the garage, and am buying a Jeep :D

A salted Michigan winter road is a shitbox. And the winter season isn't really for cruising like summer is, so I've never felt the need to drive my DSM or any nice car in the winter. As nasty as the roads get and knowing what that's doing to the car's under carrage, it's actually a relief to know that I'm not ruining anything of value when I drive to work everyday. Shitbox cars are cheap to buy, cheap to maintain, cheap to insure, and if you wreck it, there's no tears to shed over it.

And they aren't as expensive as most people think. My list:

'89 Mazda 626 - $100
'92 S10 4x4 - $200
'96 Grand Prix - $500

All of them ran and drove when purchased. Each one lasted a minimum of two years.

Don't remove that protective dirt while it's in storage. Besides, it'll show the prints of everyone who's messed with it.

Ahh, Very good idea. I didn't even think of that but your very right. Its staying at my grandfathers airplane hanger. He uses the hanger as his workshop to restore Ford model T's and A's. So hopefully the only hand prints will be his.

Just out of curiosity, would you recommend doing this far beyond recommending someone buy a quality car cover? Some of us don't intend on working on the car over the winter season, but still want to save it from the roads. I know there would be a fear of things nesting in the car. I also know the car should be started at least once a month to keep the fluids moving (and take it out for a drive on the good days). But overall I think it would be much cheaper to invest in one of these covers for some of us budget-minded car guys.

That's what we plan on doing with my brother's car for this winter also. He just bought a car cover from ebay and he's just going to keep it out on the street. And like you said, start it and drive it on good days. I'm interested in other's opinions on this too.

Completely agree. I too live in Michigan and the winters here are harsh (especially up here in Traverse City). My car is from Texas and doesn't have a spot of rust and I intend to keep it that way.

Its also nice having the entire winter to fix the gremlins that appeared over the spring/summer and have it ready to go once the weather clears. My best investment in my DSM is my $250 93 Saturn. LOL

Ever priced out one of those "outdoor" car covers before? You'd be surprised at how expensive a good one can be. And they wont protect the undercarriage.

I quickly looked here (specifically for my DSM; different options may be chosen for other models) and I could pick one up for a bit over 300. There are some on that same site that go for up to about 600, though. The price isn't that bad, IMO.

Undercarriage shmundercarriage. :p

That's alot of cheddar for just a car cover. One of my co-workers is selling an 85 Chevy Celebrity for $300 right now. I'd much rather park my DSM somewhere out of the elements and drive a cheap beater car that costs the same as a car cover. Some people enjoy driving their DSM in the winter though, so I guess it's all about personal preference. :)

Hmm I live in FL, I would be happy to keep her goin for you :D. Just playin of course.

You should think about transferring to Fl. You can drive her year round down here. The tracks only close for 2-3 weeks over the new yrs.
