This is actually regarding my 1991 Geo Metro daily driver. It's a 3 cylinder with 96000 miles on it. I couldn't find any half decent Metro forums so I would really appreciate your help.

I was driving on the highway during slight ran. The first thing I noticed were the wipers working about half slower then normal. About 5 minutes later I couldn't maintain speed. It felt like I had a slipping clutch and fouled spark plugs. Whenever I tried to accelerate the car would only hesitate. Had the car towed home. It turned on without trouble. I left it running for 20 minutes without problems. I then took it out for a spin. The hesitation started again and the wipers were still slow. I turned it off and then it wouldn't turn on. I tried again 30 minutes later and it turned on ok. I've also noticed that the coolant indicator doesn't get to the mid point as usual.

This scenario obviously rules out the alternator or battery. I've checked all the fuses and scanned for codes but that's all good. Plugs were changed 25000 miles ago. Battery and plug wires are about 6 months old. I also cleaned out any corroded ground terminals I could find.

Have you checked the voltage... before you rule out the altenator and battery? Have you checked the altenator under load?

It sounds like an altenator issue to me. I.e. when warm and under load, it is underperforming and the car drains battery.

Hmmm... but then why would the car start afterwards and maintain a health idle? If the alternator goes doesn't it completely kill the battery?

It does hesitate ONLY under load though. If i pop it into neutral I can rev the engine without any hesitation

Thanks. Never came across that forum. Wow all those people dedicated to such a POS car. ROFL

It didn't start last night or this morning so I figure it is the alternator after all.

Definitely the Alt, I had the same problem in my Ranger. Go to advanced ap and they'll test it for you there. If it isn't that, they'll find out exactly what it is.

Pretty sure it's the alt. too. If it was anything else like the ignition coil or distributor it would start every time... well I took out the old alt. and it's sitting in the Talon's trunk ready to be core exchanged when the rebuilt alt. comes in from Montreal in a couple of days

oh man! that's hilarious :) You can't find a more disposible car then this and these guys want to do this to it! haha

when it died I was ready to roll it off a hill into the lake but I need it to last the winter

Did you read their posts? I just realized I did my defense arguments almost a year ago, and it still makes me laugh my ass off.

man that's funny stuff... btw... it was the alternator after all
