hey guys i have 97 eclipse and so does my gf. she got it acouple months ago. It has a full exhaust.. header, catback, intake and a rebiult topend. Its auto. She's had a problem with it ever since she got it, when she gets on it and the rpms go over 5k it has this wierd bog noise. Its like its got a cold or somthing but its only when it shifts. The car is slugish compared to mine and has bad acc. and is hard to maintain a highway speed without downshifting. It doesnt back fire, spit or sputter while taking off or while normal driving just when it shifts. It has no check engine light and i have changed the coil and wires when i got my msd ignition. Heres a video. does it sound like timming is off ? I did not do the head on the car so im wondering if the timming could be a tooth or 2 off ? Just want to get a second opinion before i start to tear the timming down. thanks in advance:)

thats what my 98 did when the ecu went bad man that could be ## prob but no deff

My 95 GS almost does the same thing. I just had the timing belt done at a local shop and ever since it hasnt been right. Bringing her back this week to have it checked.

Sorry to bring the old thread back but the car has some new issues...
recently it has been haveing these stalling issues while driving. she tells me she'll be driving and the car just dies and she has to pull over and start it again and then it goes back to normal. I checked codes acouple weeks ago and it gave me codes 41 42 and 43 ..WTF? all of them ? well today im driving it and all of sudden it just dies. i was going about 45ish just cruisin and i could feel it kinda kick back and then it felt wierd so i pushed the peddle to the floor and there was nothing, it died. It was like someone just turned the key and that was it. Well i was almost to my driveway so i coasted in. I try and start it and it starts and sputters out immidiatly then all it does is crank over. so i turn the key back and tried again and starts back up and drives normal, it didnt even have a check engine light. My gf said that it was the 2nd time its done it today. She also said sometimes it will come back alive but lately it hasnt.
So after researching it sounds like its having alot of issues thats been reported about the 95 ecu's have when they go out, but this is a 97 .. ? well i had my old one left when i got my afx ecu but mines a manual and hers is auto. I read that it wouldnt shift ? but i decided to try it anyway. I put it in and tried to start it, it kinda sputterd the first crank and the second time it started right up. i put it in gear and it went in fine, i was pretty surprised. Well i shut it off and tried to start it and it wouldnt start the first crank, the second time it would tho. This happend almost everytime i tried to start it. I finally got a check engine light which i was hoping i would so it would tell me what was wrong. It gave me code 43, cylinder missfire. So at this point i guess im going to have to replace my crank sensor and camshaft position sensor to see which one is causeing it because ive replaced the coil, wires, and plugs. And if it was tunning or timming it would do this all the time and run like shit which honesly it really doesnt when its not dieing.

I decide to take it down the road and see how it runs with my manual ecu in it. It runs great and shifts normal to. I decided to get on it to see if it bogs real bad like it does all the time when the rpms get to 5k or more. The rpms hit 5k and it shifts while the peddle is to the floor.. i guess this was the side effect of running a manual ecu..? I start to think about it some more and decided to manually shift it when i get on it. I rev all the way up to redline and when i shift it at redline it shifts perfectly. no bogging. no nothing. HOLY SHIT i finally figured somthing out on this car LOL . I tried it one more time and it shifts with no boging again. ok, well does this mean somethings wrong with the auto ecu?

So my original issue is fixed i think, 1 down and about 20 more to go. But my question is, whats causeing all these other issues. Is my ecu messed up or is there somthing diferent about the manual ecu that could of fixed the bogging. i dont want to get another auto ecu and still have it bog when shifting and i dont want to keep a manual ecu in if its not going to shift at redline on its own.

Right now the auto ecu is back in it and its back to bogging again. I drove it around and it didnt have any check engine lights or dieing like before the swap. The ecu has been reset before so i know that wasnt the issue. my gf's dad wants me to replace the crank and cam sensor tomorrow. Should this fix the problem start and dieing since my manual ecu gave me code 43? or am i totally off. Like i said, the only issue that is back is the bogging when shifting, none of the others are back but maybe i havent driven it long enough for them too. I took it to get food and that was it..

Sorry for writing a book guys but im trying to give you every bit of info i can so i can get some more idea's and hopfully get this thing all fixed with no problems. Let me know what you guys think.

Still as of today no codes have shown up, But im still going to go by what my ecu told me when i hooked it up which was code 43.

It died again on her this morning. Its been straight for about 2 days then this morning she said it died while driving and took forever to get started back up. She brings it over to my house and theres nothing showing up, no cel , no dieing, no issues. I drive it around for a good while. Nothing. I take it up to autozone to have them scan for codes hoping maybe some were saved from when it died. Nothing showed up. WTF! I drive it around some more hoping something happens to it and nothing does. I take it home shut it off and trie and start it back up. It starts the shit all over again. several tries later it fires up. so i shut it off and try again. Several cranks later it fires right up WTF? well i finally get a cell. I run it back up there and they scanned, Ignition coil/primary ciruit... ? I swapped a coil on it about 2 months ago and it was doing this before i even put this coil on and it came off my car when i got my msd so i know it was fine. WHATS GOING ON WITH THIS CAR. theres somthing new showing up everyday. Is the ecu loseing it or am i ? please help:cry: Cause no one seems to have any idea

Agreed. I'd check all of the relevent sensors first: CPS, CAS, etc. the CLT and AIT sensors are cheap enough to replace without testing... New plugs/wires/coil might be something else to look into. There might be some arcing going on that you don't immediately see.

I wouldn't guess the ECU is at fault, but you never know... Try checking those sensors first, then proceed from there.
