I recently got a lower engine knock. it soungs like excessive ping. The question i have, is how many, if any, bearings can i get to without removing the engine? Its the 4g63t on an awd car. I just put a new tranny in it, so i dont have enough cash to pull the engine and do this the right way. i just need something to last me long enough to put some cash togther and rebuild it. Any ideas would help. Thanks
Pat

you should be able to replace all the rods bearings and for the main bearings i think only the ones that come off with the caps.

The rod bearings are the only ones you'll be able to fully replace. You'll want to get the crank inspected and polished if you get new bearings though; not possible with the engine/crank in the car.

Either way, find out for sure what the problem is before you go replacing things.

You should pull the tranny off and go ahead and do all the main seals, bearing and rings and oil pump etc.

Though checking for clearances and measuring the surface of everything to make sure it is in spec and not needing to honed out and bored over, will be a little hard since you have the motor in the car.

After listening to you’re, and others, advice, I put together enough money to just go ahead and rebuild the engine... Does anyone know if I can remove the engine without removing my automatic tranny?? I think you can. I’ve done it on other automatics before, but never a dsm. I have to unbolt the transfer case to remove the inspection cover and get to the flex-plate anyway. So I guess it won’t be too much harder to pull the tranny. I just need my car as quick as possible. It’s hard to have a daily driver that’s a weekend racer, ya know??

Thanks again.

Trust me when I say if its your weekend racer and a DD, invest in a cheap truck for back up. It will come in handy aswell when you have to take something to a machine shop LOL.

Im glad to hear your gonna do it right tho. You should be able to unbolt the torque converter and shove it back with a pry bar from the flex plate. Remember the ring gear is welded to the torque converter on DSM's unlike chevy or ford. Then take the crank pully off and bolt that holds the timing gear. (along with water pump pully and ect.) You may get enough clearance to swing the engine off the dowel pins and go up.
