I took off a complete 7 bolt short block off a 95 eclipse gst I had a while ago, and recently a friend gave me a ported 1g head complete with cams, valves, etc.
Anyways here comes the good part. I took off the pistons and rods off the short block to see what shape they were in....everything looks good maybe 20k miles on them?
The 1g head is in good shape no bent valves or anything.
My questions are.......

- Is it a good idea to put new piston rings on those pistons? The pistons are in good shape just a little rust.

-What do i need to install that 1g head on my 7 bolt block (i have searched and asked different people but i've gotten different answers)

-This is my very first build/teardown so i really need help as far as what im going to need as far as gaskets etc. I know I need a complete gasket set for the front cover, head, etc.

I attatched pictures....any comments/opinions will really help.
Thanks guys!

AND THE HEAD IS JUST SITTING ON THE BLOCK ITS NOT BOLTED ON THERE YET, AS IS EVERYTHING ELSE. FRONT CASE AND ALL THE PULLEYS ARE NOT BOLTED ON YET BECAUSE I NEED TO BUY NEW GASKETS.

There are alot of things you could what are your plans for the car? as far as the 1g head on the 2g block if i remeber correctly the head or the block will have to go to the meachine shop because the head bolts wont line or or fit If i were you i would get a 1g block and rods but thats me

Its going on a 95 gst shell that I have.....its just going to be a track/weekend car. I want a 50 trim on it.
Reason why i didn't get a 6 bolt block is because I want to use this block because I have everything for it already.

So i need to take the block to a machine shop?

Also i plan on taking off the ac, maybe even the power steering, haven't looked into the power steering yet.

if i remeber correctly yes if i were you and you plan on using stock internals i would use 6bolt rods ive seen people push close to 500 whp with 1g rods and 2g pistions but the rods would have to meachined to accpet the rods i would also say get a mitsu 4 layer metal head gasket as well. make sure you have the head meachined before puting it on the block also check the block to make sure it doesnt need to be meachined eaither.

the power streeing will save you around 50lbs i believe its alot of weight if your going to make it a track car or weekend warrior i would take it off

Yea i can get some 1g rods, so with 1g rods and 2g pistons i should be good. I plan on getting the head decked before putting it on the block.
What else do i need as far as gaskets?

And about the drilling on the block to accept the 1g head....where can i get some info on that?

Thanks.

Nice...power steering and ac will be gone then. Will doing this affect anything I need to get as far as belts etc?

Well since you already pulled the rods and pistons out I guess youll looking for a full rebuild? Its been known you can run 400hp on a stock shortblock. 1g rods and 2g pistons would be a good cheaper combo.

If youve never rebuilt a block, there are a lot of details to pay attention to. Good luck.

Yea im gona go with the 2g piston 1g rod combo....
Ive been doing ALOT of reading hopefully i won't run into any problems.

Ok so since im not going with either ac or power steering....is there anything this will change as far as belts and other items I need to buy?

Well you will not need the A/C or the power steering belts, you will just need the crank/water pump/alternator belt.

If your going to use the 1G rods you will also need a 6-blot block, and crankshaft. Additionally you will need to have the 1G rods machined on the pin ends to fit the 2G pistons.

I need a 6 bolt crank and block???
I thought the 2g piston 1g rod combo would work on a 7 bolt like what i plan on doing

That combo is mostly used by 1g owners, Keep your 2g pistons and rods and just put new piston rings on them and you should be fine, it would also be a good idea to get the crank turned and install new main and rod bearings.

As far as putting the 1g head on the 2g block you have been misinformed, the 1g head will bolt right up to the 2g block, I know because I just did it myself, you would only have to machine the head to fit the 12mm head bolts when using a 2g head on a 1g block.

I would recommend reading this webpage, it was very helpful to me when I did my swap.

The bearing width is differnt between the 6 bolt and 7 bolt motors.

You should go whatever rout best fits your budget, I was just trying to let you know what your in for by going to the 6-bolt rods.
