My car in general idles pretty well. The only time I have a problem is when it's cool outside and the engine isn't warmed up. Under these conditions, when I push the clutch in, the idle drops really low and sometimes stalls the car. I just checked the ISC, and it tested good. From reading some other threads, it seems that the FIAV is likely the problem. Is there any way to test this? How difficult is it to replace? If I call a dealer and ask for an FIAV, will they know what I'm talking about? I can't find it listed in the service manual. All of the threads I've found are regarding how to block the FIAV. By the way, there are no boost leaks, and the throttle body shaft seals are good.

Thanks
Jim

I have no clue regarding the FIAV, but i read in many other threads that a decrease in engine rpm when pressing the clutch can be a sign of crankwalk. Hopefully its not.

My car has similar issues, and im not sure why. i am running a blocked off fiav. the car idles much better and doesnt go to 3000rpm's at start-up. the fiav is very expensive and you have to remove the TB and the lower half of the TB to replace it. if u think that's the problem , i would just block it off. Another thing is maybe our ISC's are weak or gummed up and cant adapt quickly enough to changing engine conditions.

Since it only happens when the car is cold, I don't think it's crankwalk. Also, I checked my crankshaft endplay a while ago, and it was in spec, although I should check it again anyway.

Although I had already checked the coil resistance on the ISC, I hadn't done the battery test. I did that, and it twitched, but just barely. I cleaned it up with some electronics cleaner, and there was no change. So I think you're correct about it just being weak. I think I'm going to replace the ISC.

its not crankwalk then. :thumb: but i have ISC issues too. My car surges when warmed up and started to generally idle high(1100rpm). I had to turn the BISS all the way in to get it down from 1500rpm. I cleaned the ISC also and still no change. It needs replaced but i really hate to spend $ 190 on a part that only regulates the idle!! :barf:

I heard the FIAV is not repairable nor replaceable.
My friend hade a similiar problem and he ended up getting a new TB. Good luck with that!

I've got similar issues with my idle. At cold startup, it'll rev to 2k for a few seconds, then drop down into a surging idle untill it warms up. If I start it when its already warm, it idles fine. I just pulled the tb off and apart tonight and used JB weld to block off the hole in the bottom portion of the tb for the FIAV. I'll give everyone a heads up tommorow on the results. I'm also replacing the throttle shaft seals while I've got the tb out, and so with these two items I'll hopefully come to the end of chasing down my idle surge problem (I've already done everything else to try and correct it). Cross your fingers for me. :thumb:

What hole do you block off with the fiav

Once you get the tb off and apart, you'll see two small ports on the lower section towards the end. One is for the IAC, the other is for the FIAV. You want to block the one that isn't for the IAC. If you're still not sure, search around for FIAV, there is a link to a picture in one of them that clearly shows which one you're looking for.
