someone plesae help me with adjusting my 95 talon tsi front wheel drive shifter cables. The car doesnt wanna go into 1st and 2nd gear. also when i put the car into reverse it makes a grinding noise. i recently replaced the clutch also, but the mechanic where i took the car to get the lower latteral control arm replaced said it wouldnt go into 1st or 2nd because of the the lincage being out of adjustment. thank you for your help.:talon:

2G DSMs don't have cable adjustments. Couple of things I would do is check your master and slave cylinders for leaks , and . If no leaks are found change tranny fluid, clutch fluid, and check the master cylinder adjustment and adjust as neccessary. Also look into new shifter bushings (underhood and under shifter). The linkage adjustment may be causing your problem, but everything else is a band-aid in most cases....you might just need a rebuild.

Mack is correct, do as he stated.

If you are to believe your transmission is in ok condition, doing all of what was suggested should work. If not, investigate further.

And I would look to a new mechanic ;)

you ever figure this out? Sounds simple, but most people don't know about the linkage mount on the left side of the engine when standing in front of the car looking at it. Follow the linkages towards the firewall, and find the mount they are attached to. If the mount isnt bolted down tightly to the motor, the linkages will move all over the place, giving the shifter a really sloppy and loose feel, and it will make it extremely difficult to get in gear.

also just for shits and giggles try to shift when pushing the clutch down to certain points, say 3/4 way down it works or 1/2 or even 1/4 if nothing works then do as mack says

Ok i have a 92 eagle talon i bought from a guy in the non-running condition. Well now it's running but it doesn't go into 1st right. I was going to try an adjust the cables but one of them doesn't have an adjuster on it.

I thought only the 90's have the non-adjusting cable on it? So I'm wondering would the cable from a 92 3000gt work or should i just call up Mitsubishi?

when my cables got stiff, I replaced them with a set from Mitsubishi Graveyard for pretty cheap. The only way you could have '90 cables in your car is if it actually had a '90 transmission too. Can you take a picture of where the adjusters are/should be. That would help out.

Replacement cables from mitsubishi are different then the originals. Only one of the two cables have adjustment. So the cables in your car are right, they were probably just replaced with a new set. I don't know when the cable design was changed though.

see the right cable has no adjuster on it....I believe it's the "shift" cable not the "select" cable.....is it suppose to be like that? cause in my haynes manual both of them has adjusters on it.....

Make sure the the selector isn't hitting anything under the hood. Had a Problem with reverse and it was because the selector was hitting the lower radiator hose. Which led to a broken shift linkage because of my stupidity and forcing it. LOL

Im in the same boat, guessing its just my tranny. Reverse likes to grind sometimes, but if im really easy/careful its ok most of the time. Somtimes i have to let up the clutch slowly before it will pop into reverse also. 2nd likes to grind sometimes too, and 4th has lately liked to pop out after i first shift unless i hold it in for a second, then after that its fine. Hopefully holds together for a while, gonna just try to find a good used tranny.

Have you flushed and replaced your tranny fluid since purchasing your car?

If not, you should, it usually makes a noticeable improvement.

Yea i did. I did the suggested ~1/2 bg syncho 2 and 1/2 heavy shockproof gear oil, didnt make much difference. Tranny has 150k on it and not sure how well previous owner took care of it.

nope nothing is stopping it from going in......any other ideas? should i try adjusting that one cable that has an adjuster on it? what happens is when i go to put it in first the shifter goes like it is in. then when you try to go it makes a grinding noise and doesn't move (if i put my hand on the knob it feels like it kicks back out of the tranny.......any ideas?

cable on left move selector up and down, and cable on right moves selector back and forth. Doest it do that in 3rd and 5th? also what about 2 4 reverse? One thing you can try is go under the hood and the selector (thing the cables attach to) pull top part towards you (part where cable connects) and pull the lower one (horizontal part the cable connects to) towards you too. It should click , it now is in 1st gear. Now where that whole selector bolts to the tranny, loosen the 2 12mm bolts and you can adjust that a bit and tighten it back up. Kinda fidget with t until when you mive the stick you feel a definite click when it goes into gear.

well I did like you said pulling both to the front....that actually puts the car in 2nd....when i put the top one to the front and the side one to the back that puts it in 1st....either way when the car is in gear the shifter is in that gear IE when the transmission in the first the shifter is in first...I'm begining to think the 1st gear in the tranny is gone....
