I broke into the 11's yesterday with an 11.942 at 115.42.
Changes from last time- I installed my Evo 16g. Everybody was egging me on to try for 11's on the 14b but I was tired of that turbo. Plus, I'd been burning more and more oil and when I took it off I found it had axial shaft play so 11's on that thing were probably out of the picture. So I had to "cheat" to hit my 11's .
Anyway, we installed the 16g Wednesday night and tested it out the next night. I was getting around 10 counts of knock on 16-17 psi so I dropped timing two degrees across the board in lieu of actual tuning and it ran fine on the way down to the track. Got to the track and it was blistering hot; tried a pump gas run to see where she was at, heard the knock alarm in third and part throttle'd it the back half of the track. 12.7 at 102. Would've been a decent run without knock, had a new best 60' of 1.702.
Threw some used 110 in there. It had seen one pump in/out cycle so it was watered down with some 93. Left the tune and boost the same as on the street and ran 12.50 at 109.6. 60 foot was off a tenth in the 1.8 range for some reason. Gives me a general idea that with a real tune on pump gas she should at least be in the 12.4 range at 110+.
Threw the 14b race gas tune in and turned up the boost some unknown amount. Definitely over 20 psi. Ran clean all the way down the track, a quick blip of 12 knock in third but it went away too quickly for me to lift. 100 feet before the traps the alarm goes off again and I check my logger- 43 counts of knock. I let off as I'm about to pass through the traps probably hurting MPH. I roll back to park worried I've hurt something but it was less than one second from knock alarm to checking the logger to letting off and the car seems to be fine. Ran the 11.942 at 115.42, met my goal for the day, put the car away and went to watch for a while.
Final run, later at night, cooler, decent-sized audience and only one other DSM running. I feel like "representing" for the DSM crowd and go for another run. Take 3 degrees timing out across the board, turn the boost up in the theory that it will balance out in favor of no knock. The car ahead of me spills something on the track as I'm entering the burnout box so I have to back up and wait. I manage to turn off knock logging when I turn the logger back on for my run. Line up with some Mustang and decide I want to beat it in front of the crowd. Proceed with the worst R/T of the night which matters not as it turns out it was a 14 second Stang to begin with. As I go into third I think I might hear the knock alarm but I can't tell. I look for the knock count and notice the logger isn't checking knock. I shrug and continue with the run. Run slower but still an 11.95 at 113.5 whooping the Stang by a few seconds and slightly improving the reputation of DSMs in the minds of the people watching, at least in my imagination.
The event was a big success in my mind. Car didn't blow up, it ran 11's, I had a ton of fun as it was a private track rental with lots of people from the local board I've been chatting with at these events for years now. No wait over 15 minutes except for one 45 minute breakage, I could've done 12 runs if I wanted but instead I got to spectate and chat while still getting 4 runs in. It was so much better than regular Test and Tunes that I'm never going back to one. Next time out to the 1/4 mile is the next track rental sometime in September or October. Car'll have meth injection, 26 psi and a proper tune by then and the goal is mid 11's and 120 mph traps. Until then it's time to focus on autocross.
