OVERHEATING? The issues and their solutions have remained the same- either you don't have enough cool air reaching the rad, there's a cooling system obstruction which is preventing coolant from circulating, or your head gasket has failed and is allowing coolant to be consumed or pushed away from the engine.

Discuss all possible overheating problems and solutions here.

OK,
I just left my house to go over to my GF's,and happen to look down and see my needle right before the red mark. This just happened out of nowhere. I stop the car as quickly as i can, and pour in some coolant(Coolant a little low). Still same thing. Welp im in the middle of the road, and HAD to get it home. Im only 5 min from my house. I decided to try and make it(I really had no other choice). Welp I drive no faster than 20mph, and the temp needle is BARELY into the red the whole way.And occasionaly to the left of it. Am I ok?? Do ya think any damage was done?? And im thinking either thermostat, or water pump. For each of those, whats a round about $$ figure to get replaced?? Any info you have would be GREATLY appreciated!

Used to be 50/50, but since it started to overheat I added a little more water. So around 60W/40C.

You might also want to check your harmonic dampener, if it is separating it could cause similar problems

Well I ordered the pulley from rock auto, and it should be here soon, I will put it on as soon as the weather gets a little better. It's no fun crawling around your car in the snow while its 10 degrees out.

Easiest way to check if your oil pump is working without tearing the engine apart is to take off one of the fittings for the turbo feed line. If oil comes out when you crank it, your oil pump is good.

My car is acting strange with various overheating issues.

I have since changed the radiator, radiator cap and thermostat to no avail, new belts last winter and new harmonic balancer.

here is what the car does:

When i start it up in the morning, if i let it run, and sit there, it doesn't seem to over heat yet.
Once i start driving the vehicle, the gauge tends to climb very slightly above normal, unless im climbing a hill usually it will go up a little more.

If the temp starts to climb and i push the clutch in, the temperature will go back to normal.

Once i come to a stop, the temp will start to rise up to about 3/4 the way. If i pump the gas(while stopped) it will bring the temp back down for a few seconds and then it starts to climb again.

Once in a while i can change the heat source to come from the defrosters and that will regulate the temperature, but not for that long.

Also seems the longer that I drive the car, the more apt it is for the heat to climb quicker.

This all happens regardless of temperature outside, it has been -0F degree on numerous occasions.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Coolant Mixture? I assumed you probably replaced the majority of the coolant when you replaced the radiator. Are your fans coming on? If not that can cause you to overheat.

The coolant is 50/50. Ill have to check the fans, i dont know 100% if the main one turns on, but the AC one does when i turn ac on. That wouldnt be enough to cool the car?

I have a similar problem... when I replaced my fans with slimlines the connection wasn't good enough and caused my fan never to come on, my AC does however. As soon as I fixed the connection all of my problems went away. I was seriously thinking head gasket was the problem up until that point, but it end up being an easy fix.

Im not sure when the water pump was last replaced, but ive heard that it makes a pretty distinct noise when its going, and i dont really hear anything.

I have changed the thermostat in the car because of this issue, but its possible this one is bad as well.

I have never bought a bad thermostat, but have heard some other people on the forums say they received more than one bad thermostat. Your a/c fan does not cool nearly as well as the engine fan. Check out your fuses/relays etc. I bet once you get your fan operating again, the problem will be solved.

Maybe a connection is bad.

Anyway, it probably is your main fan, but it might not be working as efficiently as it was before. I'm not sure how to go about investigating that, but i've heard of an inefficient fan before.

Is this a real gauge, or the factory one? Have you confirmed with a thermometer or other real reading that you are in fact overheating, or is it only telling you it is?
How old is the water pump? Do you have any knowledge that it isn't a plastic-impellered one?
Watch the coolant through the radiator filler to assure that the thermostat is opening as the engine heats up- or, skip that tussle and just replace it.

I'd still at least check the fan sensor on the bottom of the radiator. that one has been an issue for i don't know how many people. If that doesn't work test the fan. Start there and then work your way to the water pump checking everything.

to start i have a 1991 eclipse gst all stock motor wise i have a problem with over heating. i have taken out the thersmostate because i thought that was the problem but its not so now im going to drill a new holes in a new one but i still over heat and my hoses will start to swell up im thinking it is a head gasket that is blowing air into the system but not sure i am going to do a compression test this weekend to make sure everything is looks good there if i take it easy on the car shift at 3 ish will stay cool but if you take it up to 7 a few times it will start to heat up and swell up the hoses. thanks for all the help.WTF

Is there white smoke coming out of your exhaust? as this would be the tell-tell sign of a blown headgasket. Or you losing coolant at all? If the T-stat would have gone bad it would either be stuck open (car staying cold) or stuck closed (overheating). By the signs of it getting hot when taking it up to 7 it could be the water pump not pumping coolant to keep the motor cool up top in the rpm band. Notice any noise coming from that area? or any coolant leaks from water pump side?

check to make sure your cooling fans come on. Try having the ac on and see if it still overheats (since the ac fans will come on). it may be that your radiator has blockage from sediment or that your water pump isnt operating properly.

Cooling fan doesn't come on with the AC. It is separate homeboi. Try using a jumper wire where the cooling fan relay is and see if ti stop from over heating. If it does then you know you need a thermostat switch ( sensor at the bottom of radiator ).

how would i check for a weak water pump and there are no fans in right now but ran the car all last year with no fans. and no ac or fan

and for the head gasket wouldn't it be if there are to clynders that are really low mean a blowen head gasket
