I have a 93 TSI. The problem I am having is that my alt. is going bad, and i am giong to put a new one on but i was thinking about using a auto altinator since it is rated at 75 amps. What my question is, is has anyone done this i did a searche and came up will nothing along this line. the altinators are the same, so they will bolt up but will the extra amps make a diff. i know that it only uses the extra amps when the regulater needs more push, so what do you think?

I'll let you in on a little alternator secret, I found out while looking to get mine rebuilt. Most alternators that are rated for 65 or 75 amps really put out more like 90 amps as a general rule. Parts manufactures build one 90 amp alternator and then under rate it for multiple uses in different platforms. For instance in the 1g's from 90 to 94 you can get a 65 amp alt for a MT car = stock replacement. OR you can order a 75 amp alt from an auto car or Galant. Lastly you can order a 90 amp alt for a Galant VR4 or Canadian spec car. Basically they are all the same alternator just sold under slightly different part numbers. The last one being a special order and costing the most money$$$.

To save time and headaches contact a local started/generator shop near you and ask them to look up a new alt for your car. In the long run you'll be happier and get a quality product. Not like buying a reman alt from "AutoZone" or "PepBoys" and taking pot luck on if it will last a month.

Or you could buy my extra BRAND NEW 90 amp alternator replaced under warrantee from Napa.

What ever you decide good luck.

I'd say it's worth shopping around for the best price on the 90 amp alternator. Most stores will list an online price and give it to you in house. I got mine through O'Reilly with price match same day. Just a tad over $100.

Unless you are in need of more amps I say just replace it with the oem replacement. I took a stock one off of a 2g at the local junkyard and had a local place which specilises in rebuilding electronics rebuild it for me. My stereo amp even as subtle as it is was creating headlight dim when the bass would hit. I found this irritating

Brad is right. The 75 amp alternators are infact 90amps, they are just rated at 75 amps under US specs. Pepboys sells 100% NEW Bosch alternators, I got a quote for $450 last time I checked. If my rebuilt Mitsubishi that I bought 2 months ago for $350 takes a crap on me after the 1 year warranty period, I'll getting a 100% new alternator. And make sure you are have all your heat shields, there is nothing that will kill an alternator quicker than heat on a turbo car.

so the galant vr4 is a 90 amp alt. and is direct bolt on? i guess i will look up the price from my local napa.

thanks.

The canadian 90 amp is the same as the US 75 amp. I'm not sure about the galant alternator. If it is the same as the canadian 90, then it is infact 75 amps.

Here is a link to a site I used to find the 90 amp alt for my car. As you will see the 91-93 Galant DOHC model is a DOA875 (90amps). Since we all know that the Galant VR4 has a 4G63T motor in it then you can use that Alt in a 91-94 E/L/T instead of the DOA775(75amps)

BTW: When I decided to buy a brand new alternator for my car, I went to a place called Trenton Starter & Generator, I told the guy I needed a replacement alt for my project race car, He sourced a new Mitsu alt rated 90amps for $211, delivered next day.
